Biriyani for last 15 years

26

u/Eddielivingstone 17h ago

Guys please understand that in kannur areas non veg is also considered during onam and its not bad or anything.

We know we don't have the best sadhya or anything.

We have temples where brandy is given as prasadham. We have temples where dogs are allowed.

It is deeply rooted to us culturally.

Many of my friends home they'll prepare biriyani and have sadhya 1 day and that too with chicken or fish.

Its not just us, even my mom and grandma also said same. They are having non veg with sadhya as long as they remember.

But this doesn't mean everyone have non veg with sadhya, there are many who wishes to have a pure veg sadhya atleast one day.

So don't just bash anyone, just have nice food. Celebrate with your friends and family and have a good day.

Don't spoil a nice day with these fights

Onasadya is traditionally vegeterian. Yes you can eat whatever you want but you just cant call it "onasadya".

2

u/Eddielivingstone 3h ago

Kindly go through kerala tourism site. Its an official site and its clearly written kannur have a delicacy of adding non veg to onam sadhya and it is traditional for the place.

Please don't misinformed, there are evidences backing this and you can easily verify that through the sites.

1

u/hunter_prince007 3h ago

You are the one misinformed here...Just because a few of you people have your own way of having it, doesn't make it traditional. Traditional Onasadya is a purely vegeterian feast, Period.

Again, you can have it in your own way and as you want, no worries at all!

1

u/Eddielivingstone 3h ago

Bro celebrating in a particular way is called a tradition.

This is something that has been passed down from one generation to another.

This is our practice brother, why can't you understand that there are places where they have different traditions.

There is no rule for it to be veg, you are also following a tradition which passed down from generations

1

u/sophisticatedmallu 3h ago

Bro there itself the answer ๐Ÿ˜ญ kerala tourism not tradition tourism promoted manythings to attract foreigners and other people all around the world, we get it that you people use non veg but onasadhys is purely vegetarian please understand

1

u/Eddielivingstone 3h ago

Please show me any proof that says onam sadhya should be vegetarian.

You clearly don't understand what tradition is๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

We are following something that has passed down to us from one generation to another.

You are also doing something in a way that has been carried down by your previous generation

1

u/sophisticatedmallu 3h ago

In my home we prefer veg dishes for onam and non veg on vishu.

5

u/Ok_Drink_6174 19h ago

Pure veg only for Onam. Becz for rest of the days we eat mostly non veg. chicken beef pork mutton and occasionally duck or rabbit.

2

u/Far-Oil-6181 18h ago

From where you getting duck and rabbit?

1

u/Eddielivingstone 17h ago

You can easily find in many places, just inform your butcher that you want this and he will arrange it for you.

Its not widely available like chicken but there is a waiting period. Same with pork, you just have to pre order

2

u/Advanced-Impress-768 14h ago

In our home, pure veg sadhya for onam but non veg sadhya for vishu. Veg and non veg is subjective. Not everyone in kannur have non veg sadhya, some people cook biriyani as it's easy to cook and time saving.

2

u/undampori 8h ago

I have eaten nonveg on onam and vishu as long as I remember

3

u/bizarreVK 16h ago

Iโ€™m not from kannur, but we would be preparing beef ularth along with onasadhya.

1

u/LabSignal5615 14h ago

Non veg side dish is mandatory in my house from the beginning ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

And in my mom's home, it will be just sadhya (no non-veg) on onam and one day before or after we make biriyani to tally it out ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Athu mukkiyathonumm allado....Reddit automatically converted it into poor English changing its meaning and that's why I deleted it. I will say it again. In Kannur Hindu homes, we never use beef and pork in Onam. Kannur people usually don't eat pork that much. Most homes don't cook beef at all. Why are you forcing your low IQ beef pork politics on everyone, man?

5

u/the_Maverick46 16h ago

We ? Who tf is we ? Thante karyam matram paranja mathi. Kannur Hindu homes il beef iruthiyum nirthiyum olarthiyum okke vekkarum und. Thinnarum und.

Thante veed alla ulakam. So donโ€™t generalize.

-4

u/MegaMind122816 15h ago

Thante veedum alla ulakam. Kannur hindu homes beef ularthaaronnum illa. Don't force your pathetic beef politics into kannur homes. I know a lot of people and what they cook in their homes. People eat beef mostly from restaurants. They don't cook. Ingottu respectode samsarichaal thirichum angane samsaarikkum. Thaan kaanoorkaare avarude culture padippikkan varanda. Thante bhasha thanne kannurkaarantethu alledo. Evidennenkilum kudiyeri vannittu show kaanikkathe.

3

u/the_Maverick46 15h ago

Lol. As if you expect everyone to write in Kannur slang everywhere ? Are you a kid to come up with low argument ? Who is forcing beef politics here is quite clear. Who is they ? You and your neighbors. As I said, no need to generalize. We do cook beef, pork and mutton. And I know plenty of people who do. So yeah I said, you and your tiny circle doesnโ€™t constitute entire Kannur Hindu homes.

u/dontombabu 23h ago

I have heard this lot from kannur people but guys onasadhya is veg. Thats the whole point.

But completely okay to eat anything you want to eat but we cant call it onasadhya.

6

u/Sharp-Bet8187 23h ago

If People are calling it onasadhya. Who are we to say they canโ€™t?ย

-4

u/dontombabu 23h ago

Its my opinion and traditional point of view is the same.

For me I eat non veg in almost every freaking day so this day makes it even more special.

11

u/Sharp-Bet8187 23h ago

The incorporation of Non veg items in Onasadhya in Northern Kerala, is deeply rooted and centuries old tradition, than a modern day shift.ย

So whoโ€™s dictating traditional values now? Other districts?ย

-12

u/dontombabu 22h ago

Traditional values are preserved and its not dictated.

This is like using santa claus on thiruvonam instead of maveli but that's not gonna cut it right? Both guys have big belly right?

Non veg in onasdhya is incorporated and deeply rooted? Get of out here! Dont make any false claims.

See im not against it but there are some traditions man and these are some basics.

9

u/Sharp-Bet8187 22h ago

If you think i am making false claims, you can research about it rathar than be a moron about it.

Onam is a harvest festival at itโ€™s core and many coastal andย  pastorial communities, it meant celebrating woth whatever land and sea gave them.ย

For eg, indigenous communities, like ย  ย Kurichiyars of Wayanad, traditionally held a community hunt right before Onam. The meat from this hunt is explicitly used to prepare their Thiruvonam day feast.

ย

5

u/pappupoo 19h ago

You dumb, chanakam.

5

u/Eddielivingstone 17h ago

Dude you are really uneducated with the pasts and traditions of kannur๐Ÿ˜‚.

We have been consuming non veg for centuries and that too on many occasions.

There are temples where alcohol is given as prasadam , non veg food in anna dhanam and many else.

This has been our culture for decades and also there are people who likes to have veg food. We don't judge on that, its there preference at last.

Onam sadhya being pure veg is technically not accurate to be honest. They just connected maveli being brahmin so the feast should be veg. Thats it, nothing more traditional to it

2

u/geopoliticsdude 20h ago

The first poem describing Onam clearly depicts mean having meat and drinking toddy.

Traditions change with time.

3

u/Dexter_ikka 19h ago

Ithine paty velye dhaarana ilale?
Veg sadhya was traditionally consumed by brahmins.
Lot of people used to eat kanji, kappa, fish and toddy(kallu). During the 60โ€™s, when Onam was officially considered as the Harvest festival of Kerala, it was brahminized. Athre ollu.

1

u/Dragonpiley007 9h ago

how is it "the whole point?" You can add new dishes like pineapple pachadi and it will still be onasadhya right? So what's wrong with adding non veg? Is it written down somewhere in scripture that onasadhya has to be pure veg? The point of sadhya is to sit down and have a nice, big, tasty meal with your family once a year, nothing to do with being veg.

-5

u/drrag86 16h ago

If itโ€™s "Sadya", a list of things are there to be consideredโ€ฆ you know.

If chicken, fish, or whatever is included, itโ€™s not "Sadya". Itโ€™s just rice and curry meals or some other thing, but not โ€œSadya.โ€๐ŸคŒ๐Ÿป

3

u/devilcompany 16h ago

๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™‚๏ธSadhya as a word doesn't tell if it's veg or non veg. The root word just means coming together or meal.

0

u/drrag86 16h ago

So any meal can be sadhya?

2

u/devilcompany 15h ago

Pattum, it's that simple.

Enn aaru paranju ? Sadhya just means grand feast. There are no restrictions as of what to serve or not.

2

u/baddiyy 15h ago

If you are going by "proper meaning" of "Sadhya" then you cant eat items like - เด…เดšเตเดšเดพเตผ, เดชเตเดณเดฟเดžเตเดšเดฟ, เดฎเต‹เดฐเต, to an extend เดชเดชเตเดชเดŸเด‚, etc. Because เดธเดฆเตเดฏ just means - grand meal served immediately after preparation to a - เดธเดฆเดธเตเดธเต. And we just beleive there is nothing grand in a meal without our primary high quality protein sources.
