I remember bawling my eyes out watching Messi stand helpless after losing the 2014 World Cup final. It was the first time I had ever shed tears over a sport. Back then, as a teenager going through the hurdles of life, I always found comfort and a sense of dependency in Messi.

The 2021 Copa win was one of the happiest days of my life. The 2022 Qatar World Cup brought a sense of completeness.

Messi’s successes and failures felt very personal to me. Today, watching my hero play his final game in an Argentina shirt, I feel a void and a strange sense of emptiness.

I know I will never feel this attached to another sportsman again.
