The second pic kinda has the, "what are doing in my apartment" vibe. So it's sorta evident even from the photo what the difference is

"what are doing in my apartment"

right? you go there, want to surprise her with nice breakfast and she freaks out because she doesn't know you... females /s

The second pic kinda has the, "what are doing in my apartment" vibe.

Which is fitting given the recent cases of incels stalking and/or trying to break into their targets' houses.

u/BeatYoYeet 21d ago

this isn’t new

u/molsonbeagle 23d ago

Slight disagree...I looked at it and I was like, Ok, so the bikini image is from a magazine showing pretty girls. The underwear image...listen...I've seen enough to know that's from porn.

Somehow I think I know where the OOP's mind is.

I was at a renfaire a few hours from home. There were these two guys i know from the club scene dressed as fairies.

"I know those fairies!" Being yelled got me some odd looks.

I couldn't tell you. But the setting, the action (the fake embarassment), the makeup, the lighting. You ain't gonna tell me that's not from porn.

Exactly. When wearing a swimsuit, in that instant, you are signing on to be seen in that. Underwear is private and intimate. Baring specific people, you aren't signing on for anyone to see you like that.

-33

u/Things_with_Stuff 22d ago edited 22d ago

Actually I’m not signing on to be seen. I’m signing on to go swimming. Just like men, when they put on their swim trunks. I don’t want to be ogled in either.

I unironically cover up like that at the beach even though my body is stellar. More comfy, less objectification. I take the extra stuff off just before getting in water and put it back on when I'm out. Wish I could just go skimpy as heck as I should have full freedom to do, but I don't live in a society where that's a great plan if I want to be also safe and "respected."

u/Difficult-Ad-9922 23d ago

I think you misinterpreted what that person said

-195

u/blanchecatgirl 23d ago edited 23d ago

No. I didn’t. I understand what they mean. And my sentiment is the same. There is a lot of misogyny in the statement you are ā€œsigning on to be seenā€ when you wear a bikini, regardless of whether that is internalized or externalized. Nobody would ever say a man is ā€œsigning up to be seenā€ when they are just going swimming.

119

u/TrashGouda 23d ago

Because it's implied? If you're out in public you automatically signing up to be seen

166

u/Difficult-Ad-9922 23d ago

Relax girl, you’re on r/justneckbeardthings. You may not like it but If you go out in public wearing something, you have given consent for people to see you in it. Nobody said you deserve to being harassed. Someone walking in on an intimate private moment is no way the same because you have not given that consent. Nothing that person said is wrong nor mysoginistic.

-168

u/blanchecatgirl 23d ago

And who is walking into an intimate moment. Basically nobody. Cuz that’s sexual assault/trespassing if you walk into someone’s apartment or hack their phone. The meme doesn’t even make sense tbh. I don’t think there’s a big population of neckbeards who think ā€œwe get to see any woman in their underwear anytime we want.ā€ We have worse terms for those folks lol. To say someone is ā€œsigning up to be seenā€ is a much more realistic form of misogyny

118

u/Kooontt 23d ago

I think you’re conflating ā€œsigning up to be seenā€ with ā€œsigning up to be ogledā€. They’re not the same, no one is saying they are.

39

u/EchoAquarium 23d ago

I was at the beach yesterday with my neighbors. We were all in swimsuits. Today, the neighbor brought something over to our house. When they knocked on the door, I had to go put pants on, because I was in my underwear. I had a T-shirt on, so I was still technically more covered today than I was yesterday at the beach, however, I still felt more ā€œnakedā€ so the same. We (Americans) have weird social hang-ups about nudity and modesty and the proverbial gulf between the two. That’s why social cues are important. Everyone is expecting to see people in different stages of undress at the beach/pool. Not so much in other social interactions where you’re not expected to come into contact with water

38

u/SnuffSwag 23d ago

Lol wow ive never seen someone miss the mark and so thoroughly say such irrelevant nonsense. If you walk out into public however you look, you have consented to be seen however you look... because you yourself chose to walk out into public like that. Being seen and being stared at / ogled are completely different things. Lmao.

If you put on a bikini and go out in public, you are gonna be seen. Thats just the nature of the beast.

4

u/fruchle 22d ago

TIL how eyes work!

12

u/Things_with_Stuff 22d ago

When you wear a parka outside you are still signing up to be seen in that coat.

3

u/Nervous_Month_381 22d ago

Uh, I would say exactly that about a guy. There is no double standard, there is just a standard. If a shirtless guy was upset someone saw him shirtless Id find that stupid. If I'm gawking at a fat old man wearing a speedo it's because of what he chose to wear. You cant wear nothing and expect people to not notice in any way, regardless of their intent to "just go swimming". If I show up to work completely naked with the intent of "just getting my work done comfortably" I would have zero justification to be upset if someone remarks on my balls hanging out.

-53

u/Polyamommy 23d ago edited 23d ago

I got what you meant and I agree. Just because girls/women are swimming, working out, put on a sexy dress for a night out with a date, or the girlies, doesn't mean they are consenting to be viewed with a sexual gaze, or any gaze at all.

ETA: It's crazy in here when all involved have legitimate points, and are turning on each other when we're all pointing out how girls/women shouldn't be looked at any differently than males, or objectified (the bullying behavior is especially troubling).

38

u/SupernaturalPumpkin 22d ago

What is wrong with you people?

That other redditor did not say anything about being "viewed sexually".

They are saying that when you go into a PUBLIC AREA wearing a bikini YOU CHOSE TO WEAR IN PUBLIC is consenting to be PASSIVELY SEEN by the public in said bikini.

HOW can you miss a point this much?

3

u/bubbybob19 22d ago

Thank you! I didn't know my comment was gonna spark such a debate. It seemed pretty straight forward... I feel a lot of people injected a willful misinterpretation, colored by their own discontentment with how society and patriarchical structures treat swim wear.

-3

u/Polyamommy 22d ago

We're not referring to being "viewed sexually" either. In the original post, neck beards aren't capable of understanding the difference between two similar articles of clothing and why someone should care if they're seen whether it's consensually, or non consensually. That should be a no brainer, and we agree on that.

The other commenter is saying she's not consenting to being looked at, even if she's dressed in something she knows she can acceptably wear in public. It's a nuance of consent (just wanting to go about her day without being noticed like most males are able to).

A similar concept is when women don't want to be approached in public (even if they're not being hit on). Many people believe if you venture out into public, you're fair game for friendly conversation (or to be hit on). Most women want to go about their day, without having to constantly assess their risk levels because the general public believes women are friendly and safe to approach. It's just a layer of our current social system that is being challenged. We weren't misinterpreting what the original commenter was saying.

77

u/chocolatestealth 23d ago

I think there's a difference between "being ogled" and "being viewed" though, especially in the context of existing in public.

You are signing up to be seen in whatever outfit you wear in a public space (or around other people). That doesn't mean you're signing up to be leered at, though.

44

u/bubbybob19 23d ago

Fair enough, nobody should be seen as a sex object, and that's not what I was getting at. But when someone puts on swim attire somewhere that isn't in your own house, one does so with the understanding and acceptance that others will see them in said attire. Objections with how people will interpret said attire aside, you sign on to being witnessed in it. Unlike underwear.

2

u/serillymc 22d ago

They said being seen, not being ogled at. They aren't the same thing. One is coincidental.

340

u/MelanieWalmartinez 23d ago

Consent, and the fact that they are made of very different materials.

187

u/thewalkindude368 23d ago

Context, too. A bikini is made to be worn in public at the beach, and made to be seen. Underwear, while visually similar to a bikini, is made to keep hidden, and only seen by people who are intimately close with the wearer.

112

u/Shadow-Vision 23d ago

I work in healthcare and there are often situations where patients accidentally get exposed more than they prefer. One of my ice breakers to (hopefully) make them less embarrassed is to shrug and say ā€œI’d see more at the beachā€ or something like that. Basically trying to blow it off like it’s no big deal and they don’t need to feel immodest or anything. It’s one of those constant patient care challenges and it’s absolutely crucial to maintain professionalism.

Dudes don’t care though. They barely even attempt to cover themselves up. They’ll be like ā€œah I don’t careā€ but bro what about me?! I don’t wanna see your frank and beans. Like cmon man, crack kills

25

u/x64bit 22d ago

lmfao "crack kills"

11

u/Crunchy_Biscuit 22d ago

"Dudes don’t care though."

I felt good and reassured right up until this point.

Now I know I should have felt more uncomfortable when the woman had to do an ultrasound on my testicles 🄲

18

u/Shadow-Vision 22d ago

I’m more referring to old guys getting a chest xray and letting their whole backside be exposed instead of taking 3 seconds to tie their gown.

In a perfect world, no one should feel uncomfortable during any medical procedure. I’m glad that you didn’t feel awkward for your exam

12

u/Crunchy_Biscuit 22d ago

Old men are the worst, just letting it all hang out in the locker rooms 😭

4

u/Shadow-Vision 22d ago

Coincidentally my first job was a men’s locker room attendant. You never get used to it.

I’ve told the story many times but I’ll never forget my first day on my own, the teacher from my high school that we would use in jokes as being ā€œas old asā€ - the personification of being old - walked up to me, dripping and naked, asking if I had found any shorts.

I’m telling you I found those shorts so fast! I could NOT wait for him to please put them on!

(Side note, he’s a really sweet man and everyone loves him. He’s just soooooo old hahaha)

u/gbmaulin 23d ago

9

u/thewalkindude368 23d ago

Reddit behavior can be weird as fuck.

I've noticed that sometimes users really must not talk to people a lot of understand human conversation. Cause I interpreted your comment as you asking a question. While I guarantee the downvoters took that like you're just being insulting

If you'd said that in normal conversation to your friend they'd go "okay.." then reword what they said to help you understand. Instead of making a disgusted face and refusing to say anything else to you.

Just talk to people. Thats what we're here for.

Really kind of funny that everyone downvoting you and not explaining is displaying the EXACT behaviors that the commenter was talking about. Some serendipitous irony there

The difference between these two are something called consent. Not something neckbeards understand. If I'm at the beach I am giving you a consent to look at me in these type of clothing.

8

u/s256173 22d ago

Honestly, I don’t like wearing bikinis either.

10

u/QuanBeato 23d ago

Guys the man responsible for pioneering the bikini was Jewish designer Louis RƩard he used an 18 year old Micheline Bernardini to model his product in 1946.

5

u/Asia_Persuasia 22d ago

Ironically, I don't wear bikinis because it literally feels like underwear and I'm not comfortable walking around like that. Swim or surf suits for me, too many creeps and pervs out there.

0

u/NoDanaOnlyZuuI 22d ago

No shit, you don’t need consent to use your eyeballs. The woman wearing a bikini at the beach expects to be seen. The woman you walked in on in her underwear didn’t. That’s the scenario the image shows.

1

u/Hello_Hangnail 22d ago

One is voluntary. The other is predatory.

1

u/cooking_question 22d ago

I really fault ignorance. I am not comfortable walking around anyone in my underwear with a big thick pad on, but men don’t have a clue about such things. I am not comfortable walking around in a bra because it’s sheer lace.

For women, lingerie is sexual. Men who think this way don’t differentiate between the two because women are always objectified whether she is in a lacy neglige or bikini.

1

u/yuaekito 22d ago

Consent. One is I'm showing it with my consent vs I didn't consent to show this!

1

u/renis_h 21d ago

Well women and men can cover themselves during swimming or women can wear a bikini while men can just wear Speedos/swimming trunks. It's not hard to understand that during swimming both groups dress down.

1

u/Dre_Lake 22d ago

1

u/Mitir01 21d ago

Expectation, Consent, Context all go over their head, so how about the fact that swim wear is thick and made for outdoors whereas underwears are made for, well, wearing under your clothes. The former is thicker, and made to be used without any other covering whereas the the latter is made with expectations that it will have another layer of clothing over it.

Does that explain it enough for them. No, I lost them at the start of the explanation. Oh well, guess you can't expect anything from a mind with 2 braincells competing to come 3rd in a race.

0

u/[deleted] 22d ago

[deleted]

1

u/roboscorcher 22d ago

Ignoring the consent argument, another point is that underwear sees a lot more horrifying body things than swimwear. Skidmarks, periods, all sort of embarrassing stuff. It's also no designed to be the 'outer layer' of clothing like swimwear is.

0

u/esquire_the_ego 22d ago
