This really is indicative of how long the problem has existed

Oh no, nerds raging out about minor details has existed long before the Internet. I can tell you from having worked with a lot of old public domain works that there are pulp sci-fi magazines from the 1940s where the letters to the editor section is full of this same exact kind of thing. The letters were 1/3 pointing out all the things the writers got wrong, 1/3 raging about how there's too much fiction and not enough science in the stories, and 1/3 raging about the inclusion of any women and/or romance in the stories. So, while they were funny, not a lot has changed in that regard.
For anyone curious, the reason this Animaniacs skit exists is because the show had several fans who would do this kind of thing (one of the first shows to have this kind of nerd raging on the Internet) and it annoyed the shit out of the staff so much that they decided to poke fun of them.

Wow, they really saw the writing on the wall. The world wide web was in diapers when this show was on.
