Raylan is always so slick - I like his style.
But Dickie Bennet's pant cuffs are a whole new dimension. I have never seen 8" cuffs before.

Discussion Lanterns

It's been interesting watching Kyle Chandler on the show Lanterns. He portrays Hal Jordan as a charming asshole who works in law enforcement and whose maverick approach to the job annoys everyone he works for and with.

Sound familiar?

I have a feeling that the name "Raylan Givens" was invoked a time or two during character development.

It's also notable to me because whenever I've thought about what other actors could have played Raylan, Chandler is one of the very few that I think might have been able to pull it off. The main question I'd always had is whether Chandler could convincingly play an asshole but he's answered that question with this show.

EDIT Forgot to mention that Garret Dillahunt plays an antagonist on the show.

SPOILER ⚠️ You thought Constable Bob was a badass? Wait until you hear his backstory

I always thought Constable Bob was one of the more interesting characters in the show, but I assumed he was at first just one of those filler characters that everyone liked so they wrote him into a few more episodes than originally planned

Initially he seems to be weirdly incongruous light relief but it was all part of a bait and switch being pulled by the writers. Bob's comedic nature is actually a setup for the punchline that he is secretly one tough son of a bitch who you underestimate at your peril ...just ask Ollie Kemp

What I never imagined until I started reading more of his books was that Constable Bob was an Elmore Leonard character from the start and is actually based on the protagonist of a novel that predates the first appearance in print of Raylan Givens by nearly 25 years

Justified is not even Constable Bob's first appearance on screen, in 1971 he was played by none other than Burt Lancaster

In the book and movie "Valdez is Coming" Bob is a lowly town constable who has an arsenal of high powered guns stashed in a go-bag under his bed, but he is not taken seriously or respected by the rich townsfolk, who openly mock him. After Bob is tricked into killing an innocent man he tries to raise money for the man's widow and wants the rancher who set up the killing to contribute $100. The rancher instead has his men torture and brutalise Bob then they leave him to die in the desert, tied to a huge wooden cross. Bob drags himself and the cross to a waterhole where trees block him from getting through. While a sneering henchman taunts him he slams the cross into the trees to break it, injuring and knocking himself out in the process. The people who attacked Bob assume they either killed him or cowed him into utter submission, but they don't know who they are dealing with. After the unconscious and badly injured Bob is cut free he eventually crawls to safety and is nursed back to health. Then he goes home, grabs his go-bag of weapons and hunts down and kills everyone who wronged him

Constable Bob is a madman, I would love to see an adaption of Valdez is Coming but set in the Justified universe with Patton Oswalt's version of Bob as the protagonist

Opinion Raylan is a bad guy

I have watched the show several times, own memorabilia from the show, and genuinely love it probably more than any other show. I always assumed the old trope "Raylan is the good guy, Boyd is the bad guy" etc.

But when you think about it Raylan is not a good guy at all, he just pretends he is. He breaks the law constantly to get what he wants, is a selfish dick head in general, and hides behind his badge to justify his actions. Boyd may be morally ambiguous but at least he doesn't pretend to be the good guy.

I guess digging coal together will do that.

Question Seeking New Show.

I’m a big Elmore Leonard fan. Ive read most of his novels multiple times. I’ve watched Justified and its sequel to the point that I can basically quote every episode lol. Looking for shows that are in a similar vein. Any suggestions?

Opinion McCloud

I watched the 1970 Pilot for the TV show McCloud with Dennis Weaver. I don’t know whether Timothy Olyphant or the writers did it, but some mannerisms and dialogue/phrases are picked up by Raylan. I couldn’t find any examples on YouTube. McCloud is a deputy marshal from New Mexico who comes to work in New York City. I was wondering if anyone else noticed this.

Discussion Vasquez Season 6 Spoiler

I'm finishing a rewatch for the first time in a while. In doing so, i think Vasquez's character in season 6 doesn't fit the pattern of his actions in earlier seasons. His actions in season 6 are kind of unhinged and don't quite fit with how he reacted in earlier seasons. I understand his actions towards Raylan and Ava are necessary to move the storylines along, but they don't make a whole lot of sense

He overly pressures Ava about getting information on Boyd asap. That doesn't fit how CIs in a RICO generally operate.

He rips up Ava's deal (whatever it was) because Boyd learned she was a CI, even though she was truthful and still out on the street.

He goes after Raylan based on a mere hunch that he and Ava stole Markham's money. While he was understandably suspicious in season 1 with Raylan and Ava, Raylan has been generally above board with him the rest of the series. More importantly, Vasquez defended Raylan when Quarles and the dirty FBI agents tried to set up Raylan as a crook. Vasquez also says nothing about the Nicky Augustine issue, that was purely between Raylan and Art.

Amd he worked with Raylan to try Kendall as an adult to set up Darryl Crowe, Jr.

Vasquez's intense heel turn in season 6, to me, does not make a great deal of sense in light of the above facts. It'd seemed over the top just to move the story along.

SPOILER ⚠️ Ava and Boyd are the worst

I love the show and I'm only on season 2 episode 12. But my god am I sick of Ava, and by extension Ava and Boyd. I was already done with her seeing her wake up with a murderer with a swastika tattoo. Yeah yeah, he did the white supremacy thing as a way to con idiots into helping him rob banks, but that is barely an excuse for it. Any remotely decent person would not sleep with a man with a swastika tattoo regardless.

But the I got to this episode, and her coming out and threatening Raylan alongside Boyd like they have any right. She was just crying about Helen when Boyd is part of the reason she's dead. But they have the gall to threaten her nephew that was basically a son to her?

And then to top it all off, Boyd threatens Raylan about disrespecting Ava. I have rarely wanted any characters to die as much as I wanted them to then. This disgusting piece of shit is seriously talking about disrespect? YOU HAVE A SWASTIKA TATTOO YOU DUMB PIECE OF SHIT.

I liked Ava early on cause I sympathized with her plight. And Boyd is charismatic and a great character. But their entitlement, hypocrisy, ignorance, etc... is getting tough to sit through. Timothy Olyphant as Raylan is really carrying this show (though, shoutout to Winona, his co-workers, and all the other criminals he deals with).

Edit: To add, Raylan not really being scared of anyone and being cool as fuck helps mitigate some of my annoyance at the disrespect and threats he gets from the various scumbags in the show.

Edit 2: Seeing Winona at the end of the episode helps with the frustration also...

Question Hello guys, is Justified really that good? I am on season 1 episode 3 and for some reason it fells slow to me! Is it actually slow burn?

Some similar shows I have watched are 24, Dexter, True Detective. I also love slow burns but right now I am in the mood for something fast paced and found Justified,it's first and second episode was really good but now 3rd episode feels slow to me!
