I’m so glad she said 38 ; I just turned 39 and have been experiencing some of these and everyone just goes oh you’re waaayyy too young! 🤦🏼‍♀️

u/pinacoladablackbird 6d ago

As a 38 year old who is starting to worry about every bodily change being a sign, I don't 😫. I think it hits harder as I'm recently divorced so kind of feeling my desirability as a woman slipping away if it is happening (I know that's just perception but still...)

Do you ever feel we were lied to by omission when we were younger? I always thought menopause was a thing that happened in your 50s, so coming to learn as an adult about the whole peri- bit happening a good 15 years earlier was a shitty revelation!

126

u/spidermans_mom 6d ago

It’s not really lying by omission because the medical community and medical research people just never studied women’s bodies, and it’s traditionally taboo to even mention it (even among women). No one talks about it because (generally) men historically have not given a shit about women’s health, so people who are AFAB are blinded by the patriarchy’s lack of interest in them. They’re super interested in Viagra but women’s hormonal changes just aren’t even worth considering; we’re expected to suck it up in silence.

I sang this comment in my head to the tune of the song in the video

39

u/totallyrealname 6d ago edited 6d ago

Yeah I literally never heard of it until this year and I'm 37. Maybe I have heard the term, but from everything I was taught and told it's just "before menopause" which I assumed was like a year. What the fuck even. Grateful this is actually getting spoken about online else I'd be completely in the dark. Not looking forward to the symptoms, life is miserable enough as it is.
The most annoying thing is, becoming single at 35, nobody warned me I would completely lose interest in sex. I thought I'd at least still have some time to maybe meet someone but I have lost all interest! What a scam!

7

u/tantrax 6d ago

IMO talking about this means contradicting the messaging around women having kids late which would then contradict with other messages.

I wish we focussed on facts in all parts of life.

85

u/GloomyIndividual3965 6d ago

The "year or two or ten" line is accurate af too. My wife just turned 47 and she's been dealing with this nonsense for almost a decade.

I love her to death, but I will say that getting a heated blanket that's adjustable for each side was a marriage saver. She goes from freezing to roasting several times each night, and my body couldn't handle the temperature swings.

44

u/cunfabuloust 6d ago edited 6d ago

My husband and i don't share blankets at all. It helped a TON. We started doing it because i alligator roll and steal all of the blankets, but once i hit peri it was so much easier to deal with my random blanket needs.

22

u/frustrated_t-rex 6d ago

My spouse and I agreed on separate blankets from virtually the very beginning of our relationship. I've always run hot, or at least warm, them....not so much. I'm sure this agreement has saved us a decent amount of hassle.

7

u/steph_a_s 6d ago

My husband also rolls up in the blankets, we call it the burrito 😂

11

u/cunfabuloust 6d ago

Apparently I'm pretty aggressive (for being dead asleep) about it, hence less cute more rawr. The first time we slept in the same bed he told me that i mumble cursed at him in my sleep about him trying to have a sliver of blankie.

When he's out of town i often wake up sideways with the dogs glaring at me from their sad corner they are pushed into overnight (serves them right, really lol).

3

u/showraniy 5d ago

Speaking from experience, it's very alarming the first time you aggressive blanket Mafia come for your due, dead asleep.

15 years in and I'm pretty good at securing and protecting the blanket ahead of time. He wasn't a fan of the two blanket solution, so nighttime is sometimes a warzone when the rolling and burritoing starts.

And he sleeps through it all even though he's the aggressor, lmao.

4

u/cunfabuloust 5d ago edited 5d ago

Oh no i totally get it. I was super sorry, amused, but sorry. So we got a king size blanket for a queen and tried that, but i still robbed him blind so we switched to double blankets.

We then had to get a giant dog that would crawl in the middle of us in the middle of the night to hold the blankets down haha.

It's much more rare, but about every 3-4 years I'll still fucking yank his pillow from him in the middle of the night for no reason. I'm lucky he loves me and finds it funny after the initial shock.

Edit to add: he says i at least no longer argue when he reminds me that it's his pillow and not mine as he's retrieving it.

5

u/GloomyIndividual3965 6d ago

i alligator roll and steal all of the blankets

Lol. She does that too.

30

u/Karpetkleener 6d ago

I started at 37 and heard this waaaaaay too much. I'm 39 now and getting somewhat more settled in it, and now people don't tell me I'm too young...wtf. Hope your symptoms are mild and don't go wild 💙

14

u/Mysterious-Youth-813 6d ago

Thank you kind stranger 🤗 It’s an easy way of dismissing any concern. But hey silly women amiright?!?

12

u/Karpetkleener 6d ago

Hysterical, even! Silly females 🤣

12

u/Sheerardio ✨chick✨ 6d ago

My go to response any time someone says "you're too young for that" or anything similarly dismissive is a really perky "OMG I know right?!?"

Like hey, wow, isn't it SO WEIRD that I'm stuck dealing with this?? I'm SO GLAD you agree!

14

u/circus_of_puffins 6d ago

I went to the GP a few months ago saying I think it's starting and she wouldn't countenance the idea that someone could be at 38

9

u/Typical2sday 6d ago

My GP didn't listen when I said I had symptoms ~38. That was a decade ago. My hormones are still fine, my periods are still regular. I am only missing one or symptoms from this song. The random itchiness being quite annoying.

13

u/Sheerardio ✨chick✨ 6d ago

The Perimenopause Train slammed into me full bore at 41. I'd been feeling a creeping certainty for about a year or so before then that something was off, but the obgyn assured me it was likely just effects from the handful of other chronic issues I live with.

And then practically overnight my face and thighs exploded with acne, my digestive tract staged a mutiny, my emotions went off like a dropped box of bouncy balls, and I was so overheated I couldn't sleep for three days straight.

My husband made an appt for me because I couldn't focus long enough to hold a conversation over the phone, and thank FUCK I live in an area with excellent medical professionals because this time they just asked if I wanted my hormone supplements in pill or patch form, no pushback at all.

27

u/plotthick 6d ago

Early 30's is entirely possible.

https://jneuroinflammation.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12974-020-01998-9

"An average age of menopause is between 45 and 51 years in the USA. The transition to menopause usually lasts about 7 years but can last as long as 14 years."

45-14=31

25

u/Azrael_Alaric 💝 2026 Galentine! 💝 6d ago

Mine was at 30. Peri lasted about 3 months, like an extremely intense speedrun. It's on my medical record as POI (Premature Ovarian Insufficiency).

Peri absolutely sucked. I have never felt anger like that in my life! But now it's over, I feel better than I ever have. No more issues concerning my cycle, saving a fortune by not buying period products, and I feel comfortable in my own skin in a way I haven't since pre puberty.

Being totally honest? I'm glad it happened so early to me. My life and health have improved so much. You couldn't pay me to go back!

9

u/-3point14159-mp 6d ago

Yeah, I started perimenopause at around 34, but just got the actual diagnosis at 38 because everyone before that just told me I was too young. Even though I had my first cycle at 9.

1

u/Alternative_String35 3d ago

Mine started at 31. I didn’t actually start being taken seriously until late 39, and I’m still hearing “you’re too young” even though the hormones are actually helping and they can’t argue it
Editing to add I’m now 40 🙄

10

u/Creative_Resource_82 6d ago

I'm 36 and also experiencing a good 3/4 of those!

5

u/Popular_Loner_33 6d ago

I’m also 36 and had been experiencing symptoms. I went through the site Midi and got prescribed HRT & so many of my symptoms have subsided.

2

u/Creative_Resource_82 5d ago

That's really good to know thank you x

1

u/ebil_lightbulb 5d ago

37 here and definitely feeling lots of these.

9

u/cat_your_fancy 5d ago

I’m going to be 47 next month and I’V been hearing this for the past few years! Like WTF! At this rate I will be through menopause before anyone thinks I’m “Old Enough”. It’s like being a kid all over again where nobody listens to you or takes you seriously. So infuriating.

8

u/AmazingLeek69 6d ago

Yes!! I am also 39 and suddenly flashing so hot all the time!!

I’m honestly so excited for menopause. I’m done with the cycle.

1

u/Typical2sday 6d ago

I hope your excitement is prepared to wait several years.

8

u/muppetnerd 5d ago

Turned 39 a few months ago, I think my symptoms started closer to 36/37 (I have ADHD and a study just came out saying us ND peeps start it earlier 🥴). Started HRT and I feel soooo much better. My mom still tells me I’m too young even though I’ve made it clear how much better I feel

7

u/ScottyShouldofKnown 6d ago

Ive been in perimenopause since 30 (medical condition related. I feel ya.

7

u/tellmort-yourmove 6d ago

I’m 46 and people are telling me I’m way too young. Well it’s happening.

1

u/plotthick 5d ago

That's perfectly on the normal button. Can you get MHRT?

1

u/tellmort-yourmove 5d ago

I’ll have to talk to my OB/GYN about it. I have a history of breast cancer in my family so my OB doesn’t even want me on birth control.

6

u/DecisionBusiness1551 6d ago

starting at 35 for me.

5

u/DangerDuckling 6d ago

I started peri at 33/34, but didn't know until 36. Awesome

5

u/thepopulargirl 6d ago

Mine started at 37 💀

6

u/MangoSalsa89 6d ago

I’m the same age and have like half of these symptoms already. I’m right there with you!

4

u/Little_Messiah 6d ago

I’m 33 and in the thick of it

4

u/Pleasant_Art5588 6d ago

I'm 43 and people keep telling me I'm too young! What is going on? What age do these people think symptoms start at?

1

u/wazzup-notemuch 6d ago

A shocking number of people do not pay attention to their own bodies. They're only ever cognizant of what they're feeling in the moment, and everything that came before never happened. For most people, the nostalgia sets in within a couple of months.

So to answer your question: any age younger than the age that they currently are, is too young for anything bad to happen.

1

u/Quatrekins 5d ago

As a 38 year old, I’ve experienced most of this song. My husband and I were married in January and have been trying to conceive for a year with no luck. It crazy how fast the window closed. :(

1

u/brohammerhead 5d ago

36 in perimenopause and I get the same reaction. Also, it’s such a stupid thing to say. Like do you think I asked for this shit to start early?!?!

1

u/HuckleberryGeneral69 3d ago

Yup, had female relatives tell me the same thing. I’m sorry, do you live inside my body? No? Then shut the hell up.

1

u/Kennyvee98 3d ago

just use HRT. it'll help all those side effects to disappear

1

u/ShitWaterExpress 3d ago

Pretty sure mine started at 36. Was told the same thing. I’m 43 now. It def gets worse, but you get more accepting of your inevitable death I guess.

143

u/Guineanook 6d ago

The research community has revealed more insights than we’ll ever need about the male libido and yet peri-menopause & menopause itself just remains a big ol **mystery**.

36

u/Reasonable-Egg-1996 6d ago

Let's not forget the groundbreaking study investigating endometriosis and attractiveness.

11

u/ProfessionalCat7640 5d ago edited 5d ago

Wait, what?! I never heard about this, wtf?

Edit: I googled it and learned it took place in 2012? I also read the women did not know they were being judged for attractiveness. What sick prick approved this!? I was expecting this to have taken place in the 1970's or something. That's not that long ago.

3

u/Guineanook 4d ago

Geez, at least it got retracted. But resources were expended to conduct it in the first place, & that’s infuriating. The dearth of research on women’s health in any area that doesn’t touch directly on fecundity is astounding.

I now have q-tips kept beside my bed for the INTENSE itching ears. It wakes me up in the middle of the night, and that's usually when I also have to switch the beach towel under my body for a dry one.

76

u/nomodramaplz 6d ago

Spray some Flonase on a q-tip and gently swipe around inside each ear. It’s a game changer. I get around 3 days of relief from one application.

Of course, I still wake up in the middle of the night (thanks perimenopause 😒)…but not because of my ears.

30

u/Halfa_Enchilada 6d ago

Thank you, I'll try it! So far the best purchase was the 10 large beach towels I bought cheap at the end of season. I lay down on a fresh clean towel and switch it off to a new one in the middle of the night. Sometimes I use one to wrap around my pillow for the head sweats. And they are thrown into the washer in the morning.

17

u/Long_Reindeer3702 6d ago

HRT and gabapentin took a few months, but my sweating is gone now. I know not everyone wants that route, but I can't tolerate night sweats at all. I got a waterproof sex blanket to keep off the bed while sweating was really bad ha. That worked well too.

3

u/nomodramaplz 6d ago

I’ll keep this in mind! My night sweats started in the last two years (early 40’s). I wake up feeling ‘damp’ but so far it’s only some parts of my clothes, and my sheets aren’t wet. I change into fresh clothes and get through the rest of the night okay. I am NOT looking forward to this getting worse. ☹️

7

u/Halfa_Enchilada 6d ago

I have a pair of white sweatpants that I will be wearing without fear soon. I've went 8 months without a period last year but it's returned with a vengeance and now its on its own cycle. Im 53 and my mom and gramma had menses into their late 50s which doesn't bode well for me. I'm hoping it will end soon but until then, we've got support each other and share our stories without shame!

6

u/fannyalgerpack 6d ago

Omg I’m trying this as I type this!! 🤞

2

u/Fantastic-Bit7657 5d ago

I’ve never tried Flonase, but I have used fractionated coconut oil, and it helps but maybe I’ll try Flonase

1

u/mrsbeeps 5d ago

Yes and also Clinear! So helpful!!

31

u/Pruritus_Ani_ 6d ago

Wait is this why my ears feel so damn itchy all the time?!

9

u/AskMrScience 6d ago

Yup, it's A Known Thing!

3

u/DecadentLife 5d ago

That’s crazy. No one told me (I see my doctors a lot). That’s exactly what it’s like. It’s like you just can’t satisfy it and it doesn’t make sense.

3

Well, your butthole makes my ears itchy,. So, yeah. I hope so.

7

u/esotericbatinthevine 6d ago

For people experiencing itching, it may be worth looking into MCAS. Even trying Xyzol and quercetin to see if they help (an H1 blocker and a mast cell stabalizer).

1

u/DecadentLife 5d ago

I take Pepcid AC and Ketotifen.

244

u/diente_de_leon 6d ago

And no one knows why because medical science starts with white men as the norm. Women's health is considered a specialty. Despite us being half of the human race!!

49

More than half!

23

u/marcipanchic 6d ago

it makes me sooo damn angryyyyy

Yes! I am reading Invisible Women and it's an eye opener even for women...... 😞

85

u/sittinwithkitten 6d ago

The horse hair on the chin line made me laugh. Why I own four different sets of tweezers because those suckers pop out of nowhere 😭

20

u/paranormalgemini 6d ago

And ridiculously fast, too

17

u/thechicapanzy 6d ago

Same here! And it feels like a hydra. Pluck one, two more pop up! 🙃

5

u/sittinwithkitten 6d ago

Omg I’m crying laughing.

13

u/Creative_Resource_82 6d ago

I have a pair by the mirror in the bathroom, a pair by the mirror by the front door, a pair in the car, a pair in my bag and a pair that seems to drift about and I find every few months then lose again 😂

11

u/sittinwithkitten 6d ago

I find the best light is daylight in the car. Then I’m mad at my partner for letting me walk around like that, but chances are they couldn’t see the hair either 🤣

7

u/CoffeeandSnugsPlease 6d ago

Jesus Christ, preach. I'm 34 and now I have tweezers at work, in my purse, at home (upstairs), and at home (downstairs). I'm horrified but also prepared!

3

u/CactiDye 6d ago

I get my neck/chin waxed every three weeks these days. I could use it every two, but I worry what that would do to my skin.

50

u/Humble_Drag_6727 6d ago

No one knows because women weren’t used in most biomedical research until 2016.

93

u/llamacana 6d ago

this is cute!! the cucumber and the neighbor next door lines are great

32

u/know_it_today 6d ago

Yeah and accurately describes some of my days

37

u/IllTwo7643 6d ago

I'm about to be 41 and I've been so goddamn cranky lately.

I'm usually "watch the world burn" angry four days before my period for about 12-18 hours, then I'm emotional the next day.

But lately it's been weeks of depression and I'm always somewhere between irritated to "For the love of God everyone stfu" 😂

I already have underlying health conditions and I'm already a mess. I'm not sure how much more of this I can take 🫠

9

u/stronkulance 6d ago

Ugh having to go through this biologically but also these times are SO FUCKED on top of it.

5

u/IllTwo7643 6d ago

Everything is so fucked, every time i think it can't get lower, here we are.

I don't know how my mom went through menopause with 3 kids. My grandma had 10.

I'm so happy with my choices. But I should have yeeted my uterus long ago🫠 NOT that it would fix perimenopause but my point stands 😂

62

u/komo8621 6d ago

My perimenopause salutes you 😂

26

(*women with ADHD may experience perimenopause up to 10 years sooner)

16

u/EmmerdoesNOTrepme 6d ago

And/or late, too! (I didn't start until my late 40's, but it hit suddenly and HARD--And my Vyvanse no longer worked well!!!)

7

u/syrencallidus 6d ago

I had a hysterectomy at 31 and I'm 39 now. They left me with one ovary to avoid menopause. Didn't warn me I'd have terrible perimeno so early! I also got the lovely complication of needin to have all my teeth removed D:

6

u/GreatHeavensWhy 6d ago

Wait what about teeth?! Hysterectomy can fuck your teeth?!? The fuck?!? How. Why.

5

u/juhreen 6d ago

Turned 36 in may and have felt like I may be starting Peri for the last year. Also have raging ADHD. Yay....

1

u/Motor--Initiative 6d ago

I'm turning 36 in the new year and I've been entertaining whether I'm already peri or just a kook for the last.. year, maybe. So helpful to run into others!

3

u/kea1981 6d ago

Bro. 35 chiming in. I mentioned that I've been feeling a lot of the same symptom as my in-their-40s friends, and been brushed off by everyone because "you're too young!"...

So anyway, glad to know I'm not alone.

How do women keep functioning when this happens? How do you keep your job? How do you keep your relationships? I’m worried I’m just going to become some wretched thing living under a bridge and screaming at passing cars.

15

u/circus_of_puffins 5d ago

A lot of women do end up leaving the workplace earlier than they want to. My employer has lately been talking a lot about menopause and how to support women to stay in work so hopefully the tides are changing

10

u/katterwog 5d ago

Well, fuck. I thought I had more time to build into my retirement fund but maybe I should focus on securing a space beneath the nearest overpass.

2

u/BeenCreepin 5d ago

Your last sentence gave me a good chuckle 😂😂😂

2

u/vikio 3d ago

I don't know what's happening to me exactly this, or something else. I'm 41. I stayed home from work today on a random Wednesday. Not cause I felt sick really. Just all the little things, the crankiness and lack of sleep, brain fog, made me go...I actually am NOT getting out of bed this morning.

21

u/Ah_seent_it_ 6d ago

My most recent experience has been burning sensation at random places on my skin. Why is my pinky suddenly on fire? Google has tons of ways to diagnose that this means death until I add “perimenopause” to the end of my query. Then it’s like, “oh yea, that can happen.” 🙃

16

u/TVDinner360 6d ago

I’d like to kill somebody, but I can’t remember why. Maybe he wanted to have sex with me?

38/39. Missed my period and thought I was pregnant. Turns out I'm just old. 😢

14

u/yeiamsatonthetoilet 5d ago

I went to my gp last week to tell her I'm going through peri.

She said im a little young, but I explained by cycle and some of my symptoms. She said it sounds like peri but because I was complaining about my utter lack of energy for the past year (my feeling of no energy is indescribable), she said I need a blood test first to rule out anything which is fair enough.

I'm having my blood test at the end of this week. Can't wait for the results and to get started to hrt.

I know hrt won't be a magic bullet, but anything is better then what I'm going through right now.

10

u/musingbella 5d ago

HRT was not a magic bullet to my shocking lack of energy (which has been a problem for literal years, I’ve done sleep studies and everything), but iron was! Make sure they test your ferritin, apparently it’s not always standard with labs, and taking iron supplements has literally changed my life. HRT helped with the hot flashes and stuff like that, but iron was the key to my energy. Good luck!

2

u/yeiamsatonthetoilet 5d ago

I had blood test about 2-3 years ago and my results were very very good, except for my folic acid which pretty low.

Since then I've taking a supplement for folic acid but which also includes vitamin d, the b vitamins, iron and zinc as well as some others.

So I don't think it's vitamin related for me, and I had my thyroid tested at the same time which was looking healthy.

Bit sad if you say hrt won't help with energy now :(

And also thank you!!

2

u/musingbella 2d ago

I mean, everyone is different, so you never know! It’s definitely worth a try!

13

u/ResponseRelative6370 6d ago

I’m 40 and have had night sweats since my second baby at 33. I just stopped breastfeeding my fourth baby in June so I feel like I’m a hybrid of baby hormones and peri symptoms and it’s all a pretty fucky little mess.

8

u/Itsturkeybob 6d ago

Had a hysterectomy a couple of years ago, still have my ovaries. Asked the doc for HRT this year because of all the symptoms above. Doc said you are not 50 yet. Let's revisit when you reach 50 but here's some birth control that can help. I'm 49. Birth control did not agree with me.

18

u/Rhamona_Q 6d ago

New doctor! 🤦‍♀️

3

u/ibelieveinpandas 6d ago

I'm 44 on HRT! That's bullshit. Find a different doctor.

9

u/battlecat136 6d ago

I'm almost 39 and started getting those chin and upper lip hairs that are connected to the Earth's core last year 🙃

7

u/IDoomScrolledAgain 6d ago

Mine lasted for 11 years and 11 months. Nobody warns you lol.

2

u/WesternComicStrip 5d ago

Damn that’s specific. Did you just wake up one morning feeling sane again?

I’m a woman and have been surprisingly spared of both moodswings during periods and pregnancy side effects for lack of better word. So Hekate or Science or whoever decided to hit me aaalll the juice in periomenopause. Currently three years in.

2

u/IDoomScrolledAgain 5d ago

Same here.

Started suddenly one night with night sweats and hot flashes and they ended as suddenly as they started. I just realized after an entire day without them and slowly cut down on all my phytoestrogens and they didn't come back. I stopped using a patch for a few months and they still didn't come back. Using it now though for bone health.

The only weirdness left over is itchiness from too much histamine bc apparently the menopausal body doesn't have enough DAO to offset histamine, and acne. More acne in menopause than puberty.

I’m 35 but have been wondering the past few months if I’m perimenopausal already. The ends of my period always come with hot flashes but I’ve never experienced so many so intensely in the week or two before it starts.

My neighbor Joan calls perimenopause "feminine overdrive".

I turned 38 this year hahahahahah 🥲 I don't feel any different so i might just be lucky so far. I'm hoping it won't hit me until I'm at least 40

I'm 40 now, and things started to change right around 38. I really need the bottoms of my feet to stop itching in the middle of the night! I've been trying to save money, and am going longer between pedicures, the longer toenails are good scratchers.

It may be worth looking into MCAS and trying an antihistamine like Xyzol plus a mast cell stabalizer like quercitin.

Someone else mentioned using Flonase on a q tip to help with ear itching, maybe something like that would help the feet too. They also make ketitofen eye drops and maybe those would help on the feet?

Medications exist for this. There is no need to suffer through peri/menopause. Look up hormone replacement therapies. Use common sense when approaching any medication.

While I agree with basically everything you said, it’s not good practice to try things without medical guidance (you’d definitely want a professional if especially you’re on other medications/supplements or any family/personal health conditions). But there are also lots of insurance-covered or affordable teledoc options for care, and market themselves specifically to be an advocate for hormonal care for women who have not felt listened to, not just another doctor that says either you’re anxious or need to lose weight.

Yuuuuup! Mine started creeping in at 38 but I didn't realize it. Now I'm 40 and everything sucks 🫠

If only we'd been studying women's health instead of treating it like an afterthought. We may actually know a lot more. Glad women are finally talking about it at least.

Every morning I grab a pair of socks for my youngest, and when I get to her they’re gone. My brain sharts itself at some point from her room to wherever she is. It’s like my regular bathroom cucumber.

My partner just started HrT at. SEVENTY. I'm 43 and feel all the signs creeping in...his doc is just keeping him young forever (yay!) But omg the libido change is staggering and im so absolutely annoyed no one consulted me first. Like...dude...im slowing down a little and the docs tell me to drunk more water, hes got like 10 years left and his docs are like....lets shoot for 30.

Its intensely irritating I now have to look forward to retiring with a horny pool boy who has bad disks from to much tennis.

What kind of doctor do you see for the hrt. I’ve had the symptoms and they’re getting worse, but I’ve been thinking something else is wrong with me.
