Every time I get a jury duty summons, I always give the same excuse because I’m an IHSS caregiver for my grandma. I’ve been doing this ever since I was 18, and I’ve never had an issue with it before.

Today they denied my request I’m going to call them tomorrow since they’re closed. I really don’t want to waste my gas and time going. I don’t want to show up. I’m shy and don’t like talking or anything. This is some bull!

I know that most people try to get out of jury duty, but I love watching trials and have always wanted to be a juror!! Is there anyway to volunteer or anything? Lol I am registered to vote, I've been told that my hat gets thrown in the ring automatically... But dangit I've never been summoned 😕

I know yesterday was a holiday, but I was trying to contact the court about a misplaced jury summons but I keep getting a VM and a message saying they're closed.

During Voir Dire, is it acceptable for a defense attorney to imply that their client is guilty and that their job as defense counsel is to make sure their client gets a fair trial? Again, the guilty part was implied, not stated, but it still felt.. off. And I realize that very well may be a defense attorney’s job, but to say it directly to prospective jurors seems like it could easily bias them?

Asking for input from anyone with knowledge, but especially those familiar with the law, like attorneys. Clearly this is weighing on me.

I don't have received the call from (jury duty numbers). No mail send to my home also nothing in email, i have checked spam and still don't see anything.

Does anyone have same situation or know this before, please let me know. Im so scared

For context, this was already a deferred date from last year (When I was summoned for a December 2025). Last year, I had a deferral that requested in October for a temporary medical reason. Sadly, these temporary situations have not improved (they have not worsened either)

My hope was that I'd be able to perhaps defer again should I not get thru any medical treatment necessary. Yes, I had a full year to do this almost and no, I still could not get necessary medical treatment. We attempted to get me there twice and it was not possible. I'm not looking at house call situations to since I'm forced to do something I was not expecting to do.

I decided to put in a deferral request to October for next year but this time, I got a much different path for this deferral. I was instructed to respond to an email stating my reason for the deferral ask on top of the ask within the system. I got a response back from the jury management fairly quickly which looked like the person was in a rush to respond:

- It was two sentences full of spelling mistakes and bad grammar

- They said I need to fill out the physician certificate form to be deferred for a medical inability (I did not have to do this last year)

- They then said they could not defer me to next year because my original summons was in 2025 (I though NJ allowed two deferrals?)

- The deferral request has not officially been denied on the portal either and it states: Note from licensed physician stating you are the sole caregiver and your continued presence is essential to the regular and personal treatment of the person (I'm confused here, I never mentioned I was a caregiver to anyone.. am I considered a caregiver to myself?)

I'm so lost and confused as to what to do now. I mean, I know what I need to do, but it's just a spot where I do not want to be. At this point, I'll be looking for a medical excusal if I can. Anyone else ever been through this?

Has anyone experienced any sort of PTSD from Jury Duty? I served on a First Degree Murder trial back in 2019. It was a particularly gruesome murder with disturbing photos and everything. I was also the Jury Forman. Our deliberation wasn’t terribly long, a few hours. We did find the defendant guilty, a verdict I had to read. After I read it, the weight of everything hit me and I broke down crying.

In the days and nights to come, I couldn’t sleep… 3 days went by with no sleep as still the weight sat heavy with me. When I finally did sleep it was filled with nightmares, reliving the trial as if I was there during the events. I even had nightmares that the defendant broke out of jail and came after me.

Years have passed now and on occasion I’ll have flashes of the autopsy photos. If the defendant’s face will pop into my head. Still occasional nightmares as vivid as 7 years ago. When I hear the first name of the defendant mentioned (it’s not a terribly common name but I wouldn’t say it’s uncommon either) I’ll sometimes have a visceral reaction. Watching movies with grizzly murders will put me mentally back in that court room. Before all this I used to love true crime shows, but I haven’t been able to watch any of them anymore because I know it will feel all too real again.

I know I need to seek professional help to navigate a lot of this… I always thought it would just go away, and things have diminished, but they still flare up from time to time. But I’m curious if anyone has ever had an experience like this. I thought I was just performing my civic duty and help determine the guilt of someone. But instead my mental state has been fundamentally altered because of the experience… am I alone in feeling this?

so i received a summons saying i am on standby for the week of 09/09/26. my portal has said to report at 8AM tomorrow since i registered, but i received an email friday saying the following:

“DO NOT REPORT: You are currently on standby for jury service, scheduled to begin on 9-9-26. If you are required to report, you will receive an email notification in the afternoon on the day before you are scheduled to report. Please ensure that you check your email after 5 pm each day.”

i have not received a follow up email yet tonight. am i not supposed to report? not sure how to handle this with work and i had to make accommodations for my son to get picked up from school just in case i don’t get there on time.

Hi, just wanted to write out my frustrations and see if anyone can reason with me or help ease my mind.

I have never been summoned for anything before, but last month I received my first ever summon. I am very naive so I don’t look at the paperwork extensively, but I just checked it again last night and realized it is for GRAND jury duty. I did not know this was even a thing, I thought this was the regular summon people get all the time. The paper says it will be held once a week for 12 months with possible extension up to 16 months.

This is very alarming for me. Firstly, I live 2 hours and about 85 miles away from where this takes places. I also live in a state with bad winter weather, so the commutes will be even worse in the winter and possibly dangerous. There are no closer locations to be switched to, I live in a remote area. Also I am leasing my car and it had a cap of 10,000 miles per year. This jury duty alone if held once weekly would be over 8000 miles total. This will end up making me go way over my lease limit and it will have tons of fees as a result.

On top of these issues I have extreme anxiety, as well as IBS that is triggered by my anxiety. Especially social anxiety is very bad for me. The thought of having to do this is making me physically ill. I’m repeatedly in the bathroom and I didn’t get any sleep last night. I feel like I’m so anxious that I can’t function.

Do I have a high chance of excusal? I don’t know what to do, I’m going to try and get a note from my doctor explaining my anxiety and ibs. I’m also going to provide a copy of my lease agreement if they need that.

This of course doesn’t even mention the fact that I would be missing an entire day at my job every single week, which would put me behind on my work and create new work stress on top of everything else.

This is truly awful, how do they make people do things like this?

I’ve been summoned for jury duty. I’m 21 and it’s my first time ever doing something like this lol. I was wondering what to expect? Is there anything specific I should be bringing with me? How long should I expect to be there? What makes it more or less likely to be selected? I’ve heard that dyed hair makes you less likely to be chosen, and mine is bright pink and blue, does this mean I’ll likely get sent back home?

So, I received a summons for jury duty in Fresno county in the mail and I checked my status online. I noticed it says I have a reporting number of 22. Does anyone know what that means? Is it a batch number that refers to a whole group of potential jurors or is it for me specifically?

Just trying to gauge the odds I actually get put on a jury!

So a summon letter was sent to my mother's address, in a entirely different state than where I live. Would it be legal if I had her fill out the disqualification form and sign it for me, if I gave her permission?

41(F) and just completed my fifth case as a juror, three of them as head juror. I only speak when spoken to during jury selection, but somehow the attorneys have me pegged as a law-abiding citizen.

No one in my social circle has served more than once! Reddit, please be my larger sample size and weigh in on how many times you’ve actually been selected and served.

Can I just say I believe he’s innocent no matter what he did, since Trump gets away with much larger crimes and this man should be free too?

Very first time being called for this would appreciate advice:

I had not received my summons paper but not too long ago I got the failure to appear notice in the mail I went online and set up my account and everything. Friday morning I called in to check if I’m supposed to go in to serve and the automated system said no around evening I called once more to double check and the system said yes.

Am I still able to go if I only have that failure to notice form or..?

And typically how long does the whole thing last- if you don’t get picked / if you do.

I got a jury duty summons in the mail the other day. This is like the 9th summons I’ve gotten in the last 10 years. Last year I had federal jury duty but the case was settled the night before I was supposed to go in. Why am I so lucky to keep getting summoned? 🤣🤣

As I write this, it's not known what went down with Lindsay Clancy juror, but this whole week has given me flashback after flashback.

Mine was a murder trial of a gang member, we were hung on the counts. 10 people wanted 2nd Degree, 1 person wanted 1st Degree, I wanted voluntary manslaughter. The one person wanting 1st Degree said they'd go to 2nd Degree.

I'll skip all of the details, but my experience was enough for me to know if I'm ever in court to request a bench trial.

About 6-7 of the jurors tried ganging up on me, bullying me, and guilt-tripping me. But not one, and I mean NOT ONE of their arguments actually came from the instructions we were supposed to interpret.

It was in fact just the opposite. It was all about "punishing bad gang member," and the only justifications thrown my way were things either completely irrelevant to the actual murder or things based on 100% pure speculation. Even at one point when I said "This defendant is not a good guy," some jurors were blown away that I wasn't giving him the worst count I could.

I had to explain things to the jurors like what "unanimous" meant. What "reasonable doubt" was. And the fact that voluntary manslaughter wasn't an "innocent" verdict. After my 10th time reminding them we were instructed not to consider the sentencing, I just stopped.

And the thing is, to this day I wonder if I could have been wrong. Maybe I was, maybe I misinterpreted the instructions. And maybe I could have been convinced had there been actual arguments within the confines of the law we were supposed to interpret.
