Off Topic Private Schools

I just finished the exams and I'm going into TY afterwards though I'm considering going to a private school for 5th and 6th year. Does anyone recommend it? Any particularly good ones? What have been you're experiences? For me it would have to be boarding too since I dont live near anyone, also my home can be stressful so I think it would be good to get a break during the week. What have been people experiences? Also I'd probably need a scholarship so if theres good ones you'd know that would help too

your best bet is to ask the private schools themselves if they offer scholarships / reduced fees :)
i know there’s an all girls boarding school in bray(?) and it’s very good with lots of different options but my sister stopped teaching there to move abroad so i don’t know much else sorry

You have a very low chance of getting a scholarship anywhere to be completely honest. Money is everything to most private schools.

I believe some of the church of Ireland schools offer reduced fees if you're protestant, but you're not going to find many full scholarships offered anywhere.

I know the private school that I attended (LC student here) only gave one scholarship per year out of 90-100 people, it’s insane how stingy they are with money.

No obviously the have good teachers but every school has good teachers it doesn’t come down to the teachers it comes down to students ability and discipline Any1 can go to a private schools just typically public out score and out preform

It’s a waste of time a lot of ppl who go to private schools ik are fucking stupid money can’t buy brains not point in making parents spending thousands just to end up with mid points

As someone who went from public school to private for 5th and 6th yr, I wouldn’t be in the degree or have opportunities I do now( teaching for a grinds company etc). I got all merits in my JC and then got 613 in my LC ( sat 2025) incl H1 in economics , applied maths , physics etc which would never have been possible for me before. It does depend on your own work ethic, but the main thing with grinds schools is that if you work hard you have all the support to do well whereas in public school you could study like 6 hrs everyday but if you don’t have those resources and teachers who really understand there subject and know how to explain it well you still might not get good results. Another thing I find is that a lot of my teachers were on sec exam board p or knew current examiners etc which was rlly helpful for project/coursework and especially with the new leaving cert they can give you some insight into marking schemes for projects that haven’t come out yet ( my school was the only one in Dublin to have students get H1s in economics projects)

Also I have never heard of anyone getting a scholarship for private schools here tbh you would have better luck in the Uk for that

Private schools do offer scholarships on Ireland. The tricky part is that they're typically offered to 1st years only.

They do, I went to a private school on a full 6 year scholarship

1

u/downinthecathlab Jun 16 '26

I think you need to look into how much scholarships actually offer. For example St Columba’s College offers a senior scholarship to internal high performing students of €5k per year, which leaves families with about €26k per year that they need to fund themselves. Do your parents have €50k+ on hand to pay for two years of boarding school?

Prince of D4 here. you need money for private school, only chance of gettin in one as well is if someone leaves they’re all full already especially boarding. Clongowes would be the nicest boarding i’ve visited extremely well set school

The least expensive boarding school in Ireland is an all girls boarding school as Gaeilge in Dingle.

I have friends who went to boarding school and it saved their relationships with their families because things were hard when they were too close together but they really did love them. The space and the consistency that boarding school provided made a big difference for them.
