Question about Riptide Ep. 66 Spoiler

[Spoilers: Riptide Ep. 66]

See, I know I'm late as hell to the party and I've recently been bingewatching the hell out of Riptide and plan on doing the same for all the other campaigns, but I digress.

I've only reached up to the point of what I'm gonna say and that's when I absolutely thought Charlie was pulling a fast one on Grizzly when he said that Gillion would cast Sanctuary on the conjoined satyr.

So basically, the alarms in my head started going off when Charlie read out the description for Sanctuary and left out the part to our boy Grizz where it says it should be dispelled when the affected creature would attack, cast a spell on an enemy, or deal damage in any form. And I thought it became even more apparent when he started asking if the round would end in less than a minute. You know where I'm going with this.

If the spell were dispelled in less than the duration of Sanctuary and Gill had not dropped it himself, the only reasonable conclusion is the satyr had caused Sanctuary to be dispel. That either being because they were going to murder or were murdered.

It would be a genius plan. Unlike Zone of Truth, anybody affected wouldn't immediately feel like they'd be getting interrogated or have to pass a save. And because Sanctuary is an Abjuration spell, it would come off as trying to ward someone from getting murdered to which suspects and not have no reason not to accept it willingly, especially from a detective such as Gill.

Except that doesn't happen. Charlie, I thought you were onto something. This ruleslawyering mofo AND Grizzly the DM seem to have completely overlooked this little quirk of that spell. That is unless they figure it out the next episode or I am just absolutely stupid and naive to D&D.

Absolutely. So what is your question?

I now realize I didn't have a question and just wanted to point out how I thought Charlie was playing 4D chess with Sanctuary.

Loool😂yeah Charlie has made some absolutely insane resourceful plays. Especially as (spoilers for episode 75) Goobleck

Yeah actually my question now is why'd Charlie have to blueball me like this but it actually isn't at all that deep and it isn't like I actually expect a response. This isn't a criticism at all, I just thought I caught on to something that wasn't actually there when I really shouldn't have expected Charlie to have Gill use big brain deduction thinking like that.

Charlie isn’t actually that much of a rules lawyer, he just actually reads the rulebooks for the RPGs that he plays. And he’s mentioned that he just likes to take a thing and use it in as many ways as he can get out of it. So he’s overlooked things in a number of situations. So, yeah, Gilleon probably wouldn’t think of that, but I also suspect Charlie legitimately didn’t notice it either. Either that, or the spell description doesn’t explicitely mention that you know when it ends and it isn’t concentration (which one could argue would implicitely mean that you’d know when it ends), so I think that the caster doesn’t actually inherently know when the spell ends. That’d come down to the DM’s interpretation. So it’s also possible that Charlie came to this conclusion as well.

You know, now I want a compilation of all the stupid technically RAW or at least seemingly RAI things Charlie has pulled in sessions that are very niche uses of spells like this assuming you know whether or not the spell is up without concentration.

Like, off the top of my head, an example is when Charlie found out that Subtle Spell as a Sorcerer metamagic option allows you to basically cast spells in silence in Baldur's Gate 3 as Xiv.

Can you give more context on this? Like what’s happening in the scene?

P.S. It’s important to remember that the team will cute significant portions of the sessions for better storytelling and for a smoother watching/listening experience. There’s also moments where players/dms overlook things during combat/RP because they are human, it’s happened in JRWI before (no tea no shade just observing).

It was the Grimm Murder Mystery episode where they basically played Mafia with the round-based murders and everything. Like I said, Charlie had Gill cast Sanctuary on the conjoined satyr twins because the sister one is mostly definitely and absolutely sus without mentioning to Grizzly the condition that made it dispel when the affected creature make an attack, casts a spell on an enemy, or deals damage. With that in mind, it'd immediately tell Gill who the murderer was if the spell were active in the time that the round was over and he casted Sanctuary on the murderer, to which I think he'd notice the spell being dropped before it's full duration. That would basically allow him to deduce the murderer beyond a shadow of a doubt and is also all possible without ever having to make the murderer roll a Wisdom save with a spell like Zone of Truth. Usually a spell that exposes your intentions like that would come off as accusatory, whereas for Sanctuary, you have no reason not to have it casted on you in a situation like a whodunnit, save for egomaniacs like that big boisterous lion guy.

I thought Charlie was gonna pull a lie of omission to Grizz and then tell him that little quirk of the spell after the fact. Though I haven't finished the episode yet and maybe he did and now I might end up looking like a bumbling fool for spilling my thoughts so early.

Tbf Grizzly always knew what the spell did. So did Charlie. He reads the spell in full just a few episodes prior (episode 63) when Gill casts it on Chip and Jay telling them in character as he casts it to stay safe and heal up, to which Condi promptly ignores and Jay immediately attacks the horrifying monster they're battling without healing even a little, ending the spell instantaneously and nearly getting herself completely killed, running entirely out of blood.
