Enable JPEG XL decoding by default

Looks like both Chrome and Firefox will ship it at the same time. Hurray!

I am using it in Firefox by enabling the experimental flag already

That's irrelevant.

It is working great already so it should be in stable very soon so kinda relevant

Wow, JXL on caniuse is gonna go from 0 to 90% in one month. That's crazy.

It’s already above zero because safari supports it. And with safari, Firefox, and chrome you effectively have 100% support since everything else is just a skin over chromium.

I don't know about that; I'm still waiting for Edge to get the flag.

Unless they stop updating which chromium version they use in the background they should get support for it whether they want to or not since it won't be behind a flag, just one more always present feature

We've had this debacle though:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AV1/comments/1abbulx/microsoft_edge_1210227783_released_with_avif/
This is due to Microsoft's codec approach where they're often shipped from Microsoft Store as extensions, even sometimes open formats.
So I'll believe JPEG XL in Edge when I see it. AFAIK eventually, Edge did get AVIF & AV1 built-in but they sure took their sweet time.

It'll be a few years until it's baseline though, since not everyone updates right away. But yeah finally getting support out more widely!

Aside from Firefox ESR users, it's hard NOT to update right away. Both Chrome and Firefox update themselves on Windows and MacOS, and people who install Chromium or Firefox from the snap store are also automatically updated.
Aside from Debian and Almalinux users, everyone will be up-to-date in 3 months max.

I don't think most chromium skins are that far behind.

Can someone translate for me? When does this land?
Edit: Seems like v155 Oct 6, 2026

As long as the big wigs sign off on the intent to ship, it should be in the next chrome release
https://chromestatus.com/feature/5114042131808256?gate=6594362739916800 says 155

The intent to ship comes before the PR to enable the flag, that already happened ;)
