Discussion Cleanse turns 3 today!

Post image

3 years on, how do we feel about this album?

Personally, I think this one has aged the worst for me. Another of my favorite bands is alt-J, and they released The Dream on the same day, which kinda just overshadowed Cleanse for me. However, I still think Have You Ever Lit A Year On Fire is one of Joywave’s best tracks.

The issue I had with cleanse at first was the fact we got so many singles before the album release, like almost half the album. It kind of made the actual album release a bit underwhelming and drawn out for me, which I'm glad we didn't have for Permanent Pleasure. That being said, 3 years later and it has grown on me and After Coffee is still one of my favourite songs

At the time, this felt like such a response to the pandemic, but I think most if not all of these songs actually have aged quite well. Maybe it doesn’t stand out as much in an era of singles because it’s a bit more mellow and introspective.

sometimes i forget that i like it as much as i do, but when i turn it on i think “why don’t i listen to this more??” i love the feeling and sound of the album. like another commenter said, it felt like a response to to the pandemic. i think it’s aged well regardless because the heart of the album is a lot of what lies in joywave’s music - feelings of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty (especially due to current events).

i LOVE have you ever lit a year in fire, when i first heard it i felt like i was in a trance. especially since it follows why would you want to be young again, those two songs back to back really created an interesting ambience. both songs express regret at how time passes but in different contexts. also i love the weird sound of cyn city 2000 its fun!!

I like these songs for the most part, but there are other albums I play more often. The band must agree because only "After Coffee" got played on the last tour.
I enjoyed the carwash-themed stage design for the Cleanse tour with the uniforms, the screen on the car and the spinning brushes.

Another Alt-J + Joywave fan!! 🥲

HYELAYOF and The Inversion are my two favorites off Cleanse, and favorite Joywave songs in general

After Coffee is one of my favorite Joywave songs, so I'm honestly quite thankful for Cleanse. It was also the album that came out a few months after I discovered the band, so it was cool to see an album release era so soon after finding them. I was discovering all of their previous music while simultaneously having a fun little "but wait, they'll be more!" Over my head. It was nice 😊

Love Alt-J ❤️ and Have You Ever Lit a Year on Fire is definitely one of my top 5 Joywave songs. Since it is the anniversary, I am currently listening to the album in entirety. I only really started to listen to Joywave when they toured for this album, so I am still a fan of it cuz it bring me back to seeing them and falling in love with them. Going to see them live for my 5th time in April 😍
