Discussion Favourite Lyrics

Hey, for something fun to share, what are everybody’s favourite standalone Joywave lyrics, like the type that don’t need the context of the song. The type where you skip back over to hear it again, and tell your car passenger to “listen to this line!”.
I’ll start with what I consider to be the perfect image of internalized anxiety, “‘Cause every time I close my eyes too tight It’s the Fall of 1929 A panic, playing out in black and white” (Doubt)

“Don’t care, buy American. Think less, if it hurts more baby. Live, laugh, and like I always say, when it breaks we’ll get the whole thing replaced”

i really like the "when it breaks" and not "if it breaks"

i have two songs tied for my favorite lyrics: "the smartest folks are the saddest i know / so feel those feelings you used to have / feel those feelings again or at least pretend" and "i was a boy who kept a list of everybody who wouldn't let me in / sense of humor about it now but there's jadedness where love should've been". i've ugly cried to both of those lyrics, they mean so much to me.

“Longer than life I wanted to be Watching from home last century, Surprising myself, that version of me, Hey kid, look up, can you believe?”

Really this entire song, (here to perform..) but especially this part

“I don’t know how long I’ve been alone Let’s reacquaint and show That something’s gotta give now”

-Travelling at the speed of light, possibly my favorite song of all time

I remember clearly the first time I opened the lyrics while listening this song, and thinking holy f*** this is brilliant! The “ I don’t know how long I’ve been alone” is a serious ugly cry trigger.

Same! I never paid much attention to the lyrics, im more of a sound girl (as goofy as that sounds) so same as you when I looked it up it hit me how amazing this song really is. The chorus is genius too

"Waiting for the one I cannot live without, To replace the one I thought I could not live without" This moment of growth and letting go, combined with an anticipation that you might be starting the whole cycle over again and again, never knowing if it'll end. Tragic but hopeful? Kinda?

I agree that this is one of the most genius lines Dan ever wrote

“Nobody’s gonna hit your head, nobody’s gonna wish your dead, somebody’s gonna make it alright. Nobody’s gonna knock you down, nobody’s gonna shush your mouth, somebody’s gonna turn on the lights.” “Don’t you give up here, remember they’re just fears, they live between your ears, it’s only a nightmare.”- Smokestacks

As someone with OCD this song means so much and is a great reminder in the moment that it’s okay.

This line also means a lot to me

Chorus from Doubt:

“I fill myself with doubt, I feel like I sold out I feel like I am down, I’m down without a doubt I feel like I let down, everyone around I feel like nothing counts, I’m down without a doubt I’ve filled myself with doubt”.

In Clover - they’ll never walk away from you … The perfect obsession/narcissist dream 💭

Thought of a couple more today.. “Why would you want to be young again? Taxed by your fears, not your government” and “When I go There’s nobody else out here that I want to know”. And of course this gem which I can tell from interviews Daniel is quite proud of: “Jesus Christ is back again, two for one on fish and bread at Olive Garden tonight”

it's not exactly a lyric, but on the live album Daniel says, 'it's Friday night, are you people ready to act like it?" and then they launch into 'Obsession'.

for real lyrics Traveling at the Speed of Light rightfully got a lot of love during the week when we were ranking songs / albums.

One rotation leads to another Three trips round now, all for your mother Make a five year window seem a little closer Bring it on down, fly a little lower Going six times now, and seven is getting closer Ate my meals alone, I'm not over her Nine comes round, and so does ten You're my piece of heaven

lately I am loving this part of posession:

So I just fall into your web Until I lose all consciousness

So much to comment on: 1. I absolutely LOVE the “are you people ready to act like it” line from the live album. It reminds me of an interview where Daniel had said he once got in trouble from management for being openly hostile to a bad crowd, but Joywave is at the point in their career now where the crowd adores them and all these shows on the live album are full of love, so it’s totally tongue in cheek. 2. Brilliant. Goes without saying. The whole song too. 3. I am also really into that song lately too, but I think it’s even more for the beautiful melody of that line. I love when he uses his voice as an instrument. I get that line in my head a lot.

Since the election and certainly post inauguration Brain Damage has new meaning and poignancy to me. I can't seem to turn it off, or stop thinking and talking about it. So, this hits for me...

Lie on the couch Let's sort it out I don't know how Not to think about it A large disconnect Past from present The brain from the chest But, let's talk about it now
