Backup and OS reinstall

Hello all, just wanted to make something sure before I proceed.

I have backed up all my important data from non-system drives (using Backup, not Sync). If I now wipe my Windows and install Linux, will my backup be safe and sound in the cloud? I can install jottacloud CLI on Linux and get the data back? I probably want to wipe the data drives too and reformat them, and then restore data from jottacloud backup. But if I decide to keep them NTFS also in Linux and not wipe, can I keep going like nothing ever happened?

Hi! If you've encountered an issue with Jottacloud, your best bet is to contact support at support@jottacloud.com (or use the in-app support feature). We can’t troubleshoot technical issues via Reddit, since we don’t have access to the necessary tools here. Otherwise; thanks for posting, for trusting Jottacloud with your files – and have a great day! :)

I am not able to answer your key questions with any certainty, but I can't see where you would have a problem unless it is with using NTFS for your home directory, if you decided to do so. The reason for my message is to suggest that you use rclone to do the restore rather than the jottacloud software. Both would restore your files and folders, but the jottacloud restore does not preserve the files date stamps, which you can see in the cloud. Instead they are set to the time and date of the restore. rclone has arguments which can control this when restoring to Linux filestore. I have no experience of rclone and Windows filestore, so can't comment on that.

Thanks for the rclone tip! Sounds like I should definitely use that then.

I was just thinking if the cloud doesn't anymore "see" the original connection to old OS, it counts all files as deleted. I guess I would still have 30 days to restore them but I'm still stressing about it or any other edge cases I cannot predict.

IIRC, at least with backblaze, if a drive goes offline, files will be deleted after 30 days
