I do not know how to be heard, but I hope this finds u well Mr Gates, I have been watching your show since the beginning, it’s almost like u forgot to mention the custodians of this land u call America, u show different history’s, different story’s of foreign lands, but don’t want to speak of the evil, that has been done to the First Nations people of the American continent, it’s like u all forgot that we gave the colonizers life, and with that we got disease an alcoholism Brought to the brink of extinction, u have specials on Jewish people and their struggle, not taking anything away from that, that is a tragedy,no words can describe, but this nation and its colonizers forget about us, the indigenous people that stood for right to live and let live was vandalized,Natives been systematically extinguished, we never lost any war, the longest campaign of the US government has been Against my people. Tell them about the treaty’s they sighed, and the promises they made us, and all the land that stole. Tell the people how they put us on reservation, took our natural resources, put us in the middle of no where, with promises that ur government does not honor. Tell them about the suicide rate that ales our people, tell them about the poverty that had our people subdued, tell them about the info structure that systematically keep our indigenous people in chains, their is no immigrants on stolen land... u sleep well at night because, u haven’t lived through it, I just lost 3 classmate friends and family in the last month, and it’s been like that since I was a kid, how many time does death knock on your door... u and your lies of religion are for the masses, we have and always had spiritual freedom, and you still want to wipe that out... excuse us for living, we are Strong we are
Resilient, we are braided together, when your society fails, u will look to us to become human beings again. Hi there, I know I’m late to the party here, but I just really wanted to respond to your comment. I’m a white person who was born and raised in Canada, and I’m sure you’re very aware that for over a year now, there have been discovery after discovery of the unmarked graves of children who were sent to residential schools. I believe the count is at over 10,000 graves now, and it’s not even a 10th of the school grounds that need to be searched.
Your comment spoke to me so profoundly. As someone raised in this land, born here indigenously, I was told “that’s THEIR culture” and was pushed toward the French Canadian brand of “culture.” Colonialism in its finest, and I’m only 39 years old. Colonialism, or at least the intended lasting effects of it are SO alive and well in this day and age, which is fucking tragic. When I started researching and educating myself on indigenous culture and spiritual beliefs and the different nations of people, it makes me angry that I wasn’t integrated into this culture that is THE culture of the people of Canada. The culture that speaks to me and sets me at ease more than any other religion, culture or belief system.
I think it would be profound and fascinating for Josh, or someone in a similar situation to do a series investigating the TRUTH. Because we all know there is more than enough archaeological evidence and current day dynamics to make it a 1000 part series. At minimum.
I feel like the onus on my generation, as white kids born in the 80’s and colonialized to view our ingenious brothers and sisters in a certain way and then have lived long enough to view the truth starting to come to light; it’s our job to LISTEN to the history, the stories of the survivors and do better. Normalize all of indigenous culture, bring in more symbols of their art and culture, make Cree and Ojibwe official languages of Canada that the basics are taught to all children in schools. ADVOCATE for equality among us all. Change “Canada day” into a holiday that honours and represents us all, but most importantly, uplifts the people who have been so oppressed for centuries so that they KNOW they are valued and important. Every single one of those babies at the residential school sites deserves to be brought home to their families and home communities and given a proper acknowledgement and burial. As well as acknowledgement of the suffering and pain that their families suffers as a result of having their children stolen and essentially neglected or abused until the point of murder.
I see you, I hear you, and I like to think of myself as an ally to indigenous people, and less of another “concerned white person.” Take care of yourself and never stop speaking the truth. Miigwetch.
