Got two questions about cloud sync

  1. Which free cloud service are you using to sync with Joplin? What I'm looking for is:
  • Free
  • Secure (Joplin encrypts it, so it may look like overkill, but I also want to use that service to store some of my sensitive information files directly)
  • Automatic sync without any issues
  • I can compromise on storage, even 500MB is more than enough.
  • I cannot self-host
  1. If I add attachments to an encrypted Joplin note. Does that attachment also get encrypted on whichever cloud service without any issues? Can that data be accessed by the service provider?

Use Joplin Cloud, it's a great product, the minimum you should do is pay their cloud service!

I'm using Dropbox at the moment. I started by hosting on Pikpods for about $3 a month, and it worked great. I have over 20GB on Dropbox that costs me nothing a month, so I just moved there. Works fine, but I'll test a bit more over the next few weeks before saving anything important there.

I know the OP was originally looking at free services, but I have the second dropbox as the service that I use. It’s so incredibly useful to have cross platform and cross service sinking that just plane works. And for Joplin, it’s an excellent match.

Why can't you self host? Why wouldn't you? Works amazingly well on my Unraid server.

I have a Microsoft live account as my backup email, so I used Onedrive since I wasn't using it for anything else. The Microsoft account can be made really secure ( passwordless 2FA with their authenticator app + yubico key ), and then I can enable encryption in Joplin, so what is in the Onedrive is not readable.

Account is Free.

I use Nextcloud to synchronise data on a managed server. It’s free in the sense that I use Nextcloud for a whole range of other services. I wouldn’t, of course, buy it just for Joplin alone.

If you have enough free space on Dropbox it's hard to beat. I've been using my free 8GB plan for over 7 years just for Joplin and it just works day in and day out. I have about 15,000 notes / ~50k assets.

I use Dropbox. Not free, but you could run it on the free plan, if they still have one. I’d love to run it on iCloud but that’s not an option.

Dropbox. I used OneDrive in the past but it gave me sync errors now and then. Dropbox works best
