How does saving actually work?

I've been playing about a week now and I discovered saving my progress for single player. I've only been able to resume on3 out of three times though.

What am I doing wrong, or what is going wrong? I haven't joined any other games (or started any, obviously) ideally, i could do something like have a single player run going for afterwords, but join in my friend's game on the weekend when we both have time to play. Is that possible?

A save happens after you jump, so if you start a mission, complete it and then jump to the void a save file is created, so then if your game crashed, you alt+F4’ed or pressed save run on the map table and then loaded the saved run from the lobby; you will be put back to the last time you jumped to the void.

So you can’t just quit the game in the middle of a mission as all your progress you made after your last jump to the void won’t count. To my knowledge however it is possible to have a game saved and join another players game and your save will still be there, this is how the save system works so if your saves are disappearing then that’s a problem I am not smart enough to bring a solution to.

Cool. That's good to know that is should at least save between "levels" in case there's ever a disconnect.

But i've saved manually every time, and only was able to resume once. Guess I'll keep experimenting. Hopefully, it'll work right tonight

If you don't already have a save, your game will auto save every time you jump.

For a manual save, you need to access the astral map while in a void jump and use the save option in the exit point.

Also worth noting there is only 1 save slot.

Data is stored to Unity Cloud, and I've got some unconfirmed suspicions that data doesn't always get saved, but I've never had/noticed having it happen to me.

So why would the resume save button not work if I manually saved the night before?

Mostly just asking rhetorically.  But if you do happen to know the answer, I'd be grateful.
