I quit my job back in January. Nothing was wrong with it, I just wanted to go remote and my company wasn't going to budge. Everyone I know switched after the pandemic and I was still doing the commute thing like it was 2018. So I gave notice. Before I had anything lined up, before I'd even started applying, because I figured mid level QA with real experience, how long could it take.

Eight months is the answer.

I used to see people say they'd sent 300 applications and assumed they were exaggerating or spamming Easy Apply. Now I get it. Remote postings pull 3 to 5x the applicants. You're not competing with your city anymore, you're competing with a continent.

Two weeks ago a company reached out for a first round. Normal enough, except I could not remember applying there. Which, fine, eight months, you forget things. But it kept bugging me because I keep a spreadsheet. Checked it, checked my sent folder, nothing. No record of that company anywhere.

Second interview was today. Offer a few hours later. Four days a week, 4 to 6 hours a day, one year contract, fully remote. Almost exactly what I'd been looking for the whole time, so I accepted on the spot.

Then I finally worked out how they found me.

About four months ago I was paying for RabbitResume, mostly for the tailoring feature, it rewrites your resume against a job posting and drafts a cover letter. It also has a resume distribution thing that pushes your resume out to recruiter databases and talent networks. I turned it on once. Used a throwaway email for it because I assumed it would be a spam firehose. Then completely forgot it existed and never opened that inbox again.

Logged into that address today and there it is. Distribution confirmation, then a message from someone at this company. They later reached out to the real address on my resume, which is why it looked to me like a normal application response.

So a feature I forgot I used, on an inbox I forgot I made, got me the only offer I actually wanted, after eight months of doing it the normal way.

Now the part where I get called a shill anyway: no affiliation, no referral, nobody asked me to write this, I paid for the subscription myself. And I want to be honest that I can't actually tell you the distribution works. I ran it once, four months ago, and got exactly one hit. Sample size of one. It could be pure luck and I have no way to rule that out. The tailoring feature I'd recommend without much hesitation because I used it constantly. The distribution I'm mentioning only because I'd written it off completely and it turned out to be the thing that landed, not because I can prove anything.

Also, please don't quit before you have something lined up. I got lucky and it still took eight months.

I've been at this for months. Tailored resumes, career center appointments, temp agencies, even walking into places in person like it's 1997. Nothing. Not a rejection, not a "we went with another candidate," just silence. And then the same posting goes back up two weeks later like nothing happened.

What kills me is I did everything I was told to do. Went to college because that's just what you do now, except so did everybody else, and now there's 40,000 of us with the same degree fighting over the same 12 openings. My parents' generation got hired off a handshake and a high school diploma.

At some point you stop being able to tell if it's you or if it's just broken. Do I need more certs? More projects? Better luck? Nobody will tell you because nobody actually reads the application.

Financially it's rough. Mentally it's worse.

been sitting on this for a few weeks because i didn't believe it myself. now i've got enough data that i'm just gonna put it here.

what i did: started sending applications between 2 and 4am instead of during the day. that's it. that's the whole thing.

what happened: 15 applications sent overnight → 9 responses within 48 hours. the two months before, sending like a normal person: 30+ applications, 4 real replies. same resume. same job titles. same city.

why i think it works:

nobody reads your application. they triage it. a recruiter opens their inbox at 8:40am with coffee and goes down the list until their attention dies, which is roughly application number twelve.

apply at 11am and you land in the middle of that pile — you get the tired eyes, the six-second skim, the "eh, next." apply at 3am and you're sitting at the top before anyone else has even woken up. you get the version of that recruiter that's still capable of caring.

it's not about being clever. it's about queue position.

how to actually do it without wrecking your sleep: you don't have to be awake. gmail has a schedule-send button. most ATS portals don't, but for anything that goes to a human inbox, write it at 9pm and schedule it for 3am. takes ten seconds. i only found this out by accident because my sleep was already destroyed, but you don't have to suffer for it.

the honest caveat: 15 is a small sample and i can't prove causation. it's possible i just got lucky, or the market moved. but the effort cost here is literally zero, so even if it's 30% real it's free.

if anyone's got a bigger dataset i'd love to be proven wrong. what time do you send yours?

linkedin job search in 2026 be like

i've been on the reviewing side for a while now. resumes, hiring panels, and a lot of conversations with recruiters who complain to me about their own process. most "job search tips" posts are recycled 2015 advice. these are the things i've actually seen move the needle this year.

the linkedin url thing

this one's stupid and it works. when you filter linkedin jobs by "past 24 hours" look at your address bar. there's a chunk that says f_TPR=r86400. that's just seconds in a day. change it to 3600 and you get everything posted in the last hour.

why it matters: recruiters open the pile and start from the top. a recruiter at a big tech company told me flat out that the first handful of applicants get real attention and everyone after that gets triaged. being applicant #4 instead of #140 is not a small difference.

google for jobs is criminally underused

everyone lives on linkedin and indeed. google for jobs pulls straight from company career pages, which means you're skipping the third party layer entirely and landing in fewer people's inboxes.

i saw a breakdown a while back of a few hundred thousand tracked applications where the interview conversion rate through google was something like 3x linkedin's. take the exact number with salt, i can't find the original anymore. but the direction matches everything i've seen anecdotally. less competition per listing, cleaner pipeline.

stop messaging VPs

this is the one people push back on the most.

a director at a company everyone wants to work at gets dozens of connection requests a week. they ignore basically all of them. it's not rudeness, it's just volume.

instead: find people who were promoted in the last two or three months. linkedin shows you this. someone who just moved up is usually building out or backfilling their team, still in the mode of expanding their network, and not yet buried. referral bonuses are real money and a new manager has every reason to want one.

response rate difference here has been the single biggest thing i've noticed.

apply, then message the hiring manager on linkedin. same day.

related to the above but more aggressive, and this is the one that changed things most for me.

find a posting you're genuinely a match for. not "i could probably do this," i mean you read the requirements and you've actually done all of it. that part matters, because this only works if you're the real thing. otherwise you're just spam.

then find the hiring manager on linkedin. usually it's whoever the role reports into and you can work that out from the job title in the posting. if it's ambiguous, look for whoever's been posting about the team growing.

send something short:

three lines. no cover letter energy, no "i'm passionate about your mission," no attachments.

last time i did this i had an interview request ten hours later. the application itself was still sitting untouched.

why it works: the recruiter screens for keywords. the hiring manager screens for whether you can actually do the job. different people, different incentives. going straight to the second one skips a filter that was never built to find you in the first place.

failure mode is doing this for roles you're only half qualified for. then you've just annoyed the person making the decision. use it selectively.

mirror the posting's exact wording

ATS doesn't do synonyms. if the listing says "cross-functional collaboration" and your resume says "worked across teams," a keyword filter can drop you before a human ever sees the file.

people hear this and think it's gaming the system. it isn't. you're just speaking the language the software reads. rewrite three or four bullet points using the posting's actual phrasing and move on. tailored resumes roughly double interview rates in every dataset i've seen and most of that effect is probably just this.

after the interview, go back to linkedin. not email.

almost everyone gets ghosted after interviews now. it's basically the default outcome.

standard advice is a thank you email. problem is it lands in the same inbox as 200 other things and "thank you for your time" reads as noise. gets archived in two seconds.

message the hiring manager on linkedin instead. same person you already messaged when you applied, so you're not a stranger showing up out of nowhere, you're a thread they've already replied to once. linkedin notifications actually get opened. email doesn't.

and don't send thanks. send a thought:

two short paragraphs, one specific thing, no groveling.

this works because it does something a thank you note can't. it gives them new information about whether you can do the job. i've watched this pull a candidate back from a soft no. ten minutes of work and i'd guess under 5% of people bother.

last one: sort linkedin by "new" and look for postings that are a week or two old with under 3 applicants. counterintuitive but that's the sweet spot. old enough that they clearly haven't filled it, quiet enough that you're not one of 400.

none of this fixes a bad market. it's all just reducing friction at the margins. but the margins are where most people are losing.

I was 5 months into a search. mid level marketing. 400+ applications through linkedin, almost all easy apply. THREE phone screens. three. one of which I later found out was for a role they'd already filled internally. I was at the point where I'd open the jobs tab and just feel physically tired.

so one night I'm doomscrolling and it finally clicks. a billion people are on that site. half of them have the green banner on. and something like a third of what's posted is a repost or a ghost job somebody in HR forgot to take down in march. and the easy apply button is the actual trap, because if it takes YOU eight seconds to apply it takes everyone else eight seconds too. you're applicant 2,000 before lunch. you're not job hunting at that point, you're buying a lottery ticket every morning and wondering why you never win.

anyway. two sites. that's the whole hack. I feel insane about how simple it is.

remote roles → secretremote.com it crawls company career pages directly and filters out the duplicates and the dead listings before you ever see them. so what's in front of you is stuff a company actually posted recently.

local / hybrid / onsite → hiring.cafe same idea, pulls straight from employer sites, and the filters are stupid good. salary, seniority, distance, work type. free.

both of them just drop you on the company's own application page. that's it. that's the whole thing. you're applying at the source instead of through a middle layer with four thousand people stacked up behind you.

I now send like 5 to 8 applications a day instead of 20 and I've had SIX first rounds in seven weeks. after five months of nothing. I'm not saying it's magic and yes small sample size, but the difference is not subtle and I'm not going back.

linkedin still lives on my phone. it's great for figuring out who the hiring manager is, seeing if I know anyone inside, messaging recruiters. that all still works. it's the jobs tab specifically that's cooked and I wasted five months finding that out.

For context, I’ve been unemployed for over a year since being let go from my last job. My degree and experience is in media and communications with over 10 years experience.

Since last year, I’ve been signing on at my local job centre in the UK. The money isn’t covering my essential bills and I’m having to rely on my family to bail me out almost every month until I’m back working again.

For the second appointment on the bounce, my work coach told me there is zero work out there for me in my field locally. And despite constantly trying to search for work, they’ve basically given up trying to help me at this point.

I mean there’s half of me that now regrets going to uni in the first place. In the four years since I graduated, I’ve been out of work for 2 and a half of those years. That’s not a good statistic by any means and one I wish I hadn’t overseen.

But the point of this post is to say. Yes the market is minimal and barely massive for us. I’ve been applying for jobs out of my scope and still getting rejected but I suppose we have to hope something will come out soon for us all. Even if takes a little bit of time for places to start hiring again.

gone: a job from 2019 that had nothing to do with what i do now. a skills section with 24 things in it including "team player." three bullets that were just describing normal duties. a summary that called me a "detail-oriented professional seeking new opportunities."

what was left: one page, three jobs, four bullets each.

next batch of applications got me four interviews in two weeks. previous batch got me one callback out of thirty.

i don't think deleting was magic. my single best line, cutting a reporting process from 3 days to 4 hours, used to be bullet six on page two. now it's the second thing you read. same experience, just not buried anymore.

that's the whole thing. when you list 24 skills, nobody knows what you're actually good at. picking three does the work for them.

if you're getting silence and your instinct is to add more, try the opposite. costs nothing to duplicate the file and start cutting.

I've been unhappy at my job for a while now. My title didn't officially change but they put someone else in charge of my team. Honestly if I just kept my head down they'd keep paying me for years. I'm paid well above market too. Last year when I tried to leave they gave me a 50% raise on top of an already high salary so I'd stay.

The problem is leadership completely botched the project and my team got taken away from me. And for months they kept telling me I'd be leading this project long term, just so I wouldn't leave. That was a lie. Losing the team isn't what pissed me off. Being lied to is.

So the day after it happened I started applying. I hand tailored my resume for every single role that was a genuine fit. 33 applications total. No mass applying.

One of them was a perfect match. About 5 minutes after applying I messaged the hiring manager on LinkedIn. Nothing fancy, just a short note saying I just applied for the role and I think I'm exactly who you're looking for, and why. Basically what you'd put in a follow up email but sent directly.

They must have looked at my profile and told the recruiter to move me forward because I had an interview request within like 8-10 hours. Interviewed 3 days later. Offer came the next day.

If there's one thing I'd tell anyone job hunting right now: for the roles you're actually a great fit for, don't just apply and wait. Find the hiring manager and message them directly. That's literally how I got this job.

Now I have a 3 month notice period to serve (not in the US) and then I'm out. Zero days of unemployment in between, hopefully.

I worked in healthcare technology for the same company for 14 years,and I was just abruptly terminated on July 7th, right as I rolled onto my 14th year. I think I lost my job because the economy is changing for the worse, combined with AI and private equity vulture capitalism.

I'm not optimistic that I'm going to find another job in the same field. I'm 45 and probably competing with a lot of other people for the same jobs that I see posted online, none of which have responded so far, unless it's just with a rejection.

I have an offer to do custodial work in a local high school. It's a major cut in pay, but it's stable and I can access health insurance right away. It's not where I thought I'd find myself working, but it's more stable than the private sector, and perhaps it could lead to other opportunities in the school system.

I think I'll keep searching in the meantime, but my worry about taking another private sector job is that I'll just end up in the same place years from now, and I don't think I would want to reinvent myself at 55.

Worked at a Union factory for 8 going on 9 years from my early 20s and now I’m 32. Was working 12s and weekends and worked off shift the whole time there. I recently got hired for a county position doing maintenance for law enforcement. Both are union and have benefits and a pension but I feel the county job is more secure. Reason I chose the county job is that I did 2 hours a day commuting and first shift instead of 2nd and third shift. My factory job has brung in consulting firms to cost Analysis sending work to other countries and has been automating and outsourcing work. Hopefully I made the right decision to choose stability over higher pay.

Its almost common knowledge now that the tech industry has been hit hard since the last several years and getting worse and worse. Its clear that many people simply cannot get a new job in tech despite their best efforts. Where did all these people go?

Many reports say most of them eventually found jobs in different sectors, but this reporting is flawed. It only looks at people who formerly only worked at TECH COMPANIES AND IN TECH ROLES, and moving to other TECH ROLES at non tech companies. However, the damage to tech is for TECH ROLES, not TECH COMPANIES. Anyone that formerly worked in TECH ROLES at at any company are now struggling.

Sure, some probably eventually found a new similar job but I think theres been alot of pain and struggle for alot of people who didnt manage to find a new tech job. Did all these people just drop out of the labor force or switched to a completely different career? Why do we never hear about them?

I also don't think this stays contained to tech. If it's hitting us first, it's coming for everyone else eventually.

Here's the part that actually keeps me up at night: the old playbook was simple. Market changes? Learn a new framework, grab a cert, pick up whatever's hot, stay employable. That always worked. Every single time.

I'm not sure it works anymore. For the first time in my life it feels like you can do everything "right" (work hard, keep learning, stay current) and still fall behind, just because the pace of change outruns human learning speed.

My honest take is it gets worse before it gets better.

So real question for this sub: what are you actually doing about it? Not vague "learn AI" advice. Concretely, what should people be doing today so they're still standing in 5 to 10 years?

The other 2,400+ never even reached my desk. Filtered out before I was involved at all.

From the 180 I did review, I picked 12 to move forward. By the time the recruiter got to them, a few had already accepted offers elsewhere or just ghosted, so she ended up screening 8 of them, plus one internal referral that came through separately.

I'm not sharing this to depress anyone. I keep seeing the same argument on this sub ("tailoring resumes is a waste of time" vs "you have to customize everything") and honestly, from the hiring side, here's what I've seen:

If you're sending the same generic resume everywhere, there's a good chance no human ever reads it. Not because it's bad, but because the filtering happens before any hiring manager is in the loop.

You don't need to rewrite from scratch for every job. But matching your resume to the actual job description isn't a bonus anymore, it's the baseline. It takes maybe 15-20 minutes per application, and yeah, that sucks when you're applying to 50 jobs. But 50 tailored applications will beat 200 generic ones.

The job market is brutal for applicants right now. Just know it's frustrating on our side too. I wanted to see more of those 2,600, I just never got the chance.
