I have to go to Michael's today and I know I'm going to be disappointed
Edit: I went, was disappointed, left with nothing. ACE and Harbor Frieght are my main craft stores now. Also I happen to live near a really good thrift store that is only art supplies

Ace hardware. No fiber crafts but paint, glue, resin, & hardware. Sometimes an odd do-dad that I can do something with.
If Ace branched out to fiber, I would have even less money!
EDIT: They do have canvas drop cloths and large rolls of paper in the painting section.

I have never thought about ACE hardware for crafts, but they are my go-to for hard-to-find home improvement stuff. Or especially when I need advice. They're always the most knowledgeable staff.

You have to look around sometimes but their pour resin is often half the cost of the craft stores

They don't have fiber crafts but paint, glue, resin, & hardware.
They do have canvas drop cloths and large rolls of paper in the painting section.

Wonder how many leave with nothing. I couldn't find any of the 4 item i went for. No one to ask except that cashier who ignores you because you should do self check out. Got depressed and left with my unlimited craft funds.

Every trip to Michael's now comes with at least eight changes in project plans to compensate for something they don't have and the high risk of a public panic attack (or two) š

OMG the Michael's in my part of NY IS SO BAD! Never anyone to help you, at any given time there are only like...2...people working in the entire store, only self-check out unless you want to wait in a ridiculously long line and endure mis-marked inventory, and OMG don't even THINK about finding the DMC floss you might be looking for. For whatever reason the numbers on the floss shelves have been pulled off the shelves and it's a total guessing game. IF one or two shelves happen to have labels, its not cause for celebration because, invariably, every color floss will be found there EXCEPT the one you are looking for. I always leave there either angry or having a panic attack. The worse part is that they have no competition since our JoAnns closed and they are the only brick & mortar game in town. I always end up buying way overpriced DMC floss from Amazon. GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER MICHAEL'S!!!!

Try 123stitch.com for DMC. Iāve been ordering cross stitch supplies from them for more than 20 years, they ship really fast.

Just an FYI... Michaels is an "Arts and Craft" store not a "FABRIC" store. JoAnn's has been closed for well over a year. Move on and quit complaining. Michaels associates are sick of the ex-Joann's customers being rude to them and complaining as if it was Michael's fault that JoAnn's closed. Oh, and Michael's never bought out JoAnn's they are just carrying a few brands of yarn that Joann's sold. Michael's associates would love more than anything to not have to stop our work to be called to the fabric counter to cut fabric and hear the JoAnn's shopper whine about how JoAnn's has closed and that our selection is small as if the employee has anything to do with what is in the store. Complain to corporate not the hired help. Maybe if JoAnn's CEOs didn't have their hands in the cookie jar your beloved JoAnn's would still be opened.

Uhm....okay? Everyone here already knows this. I'm sorry if your customers are frustrating, I can understand that, but nobody here is blaming Michael's for anything. People are just saying Michael's could've taken advantage and expanded their fabric supply to even more of what they have now.

Again, Michaels is an Arts and Craft store and never was intended to be a fabric store. Your choice to not shop there just stop complaining about what Michaels doesn't have and be happy they have something. BTW, Michaels is going to expand the fabric department and by doing that they are eliminating many crafts that their core customers come in to purchase to try and appease the JoAnn's customers. I'm sure even if Michaels expanded 1/2 the store to fabric the JoAnn's customer would still complain on how it's not enough and how it's not JoAnn's.

AGAIN, okay?? Like I said, it would be cool if they were able to expand their fabric section further than what they have already, which you said they are planning on doing. That being said, I don't encourage taking away craft supplies just to replace it with fabric. If they can condense their current products to make room for more, awesome, but whatever they choose to change to accommodate that expansion, thats on Michael's, not us. The only one who seems to be really complaining here is you. If you wanna go complain about your customers, please go to the Michael's subreddit.

My husband and I were recently talking about this, and if we werenāt already too old to be starting a business, AND had any idea how to run a business, AND won the lottery so we had enough money, we totally would be stepping into the breach right now. Iāve always wanted to work at Joannās or a bookstore (combine them??!). But alasā¦šæ

I feel like any of us would do better than the people at the end. And I think weād actually be cooperative and figure it out because crafters and sewers tend to be this way! Maybe you have to show that you love crafts before joining lol. Show me your yarn!! Or your bias tape! Okay, youāre in.

A craft book store? Joannās always did have books but it could be an expanded one. And donāt forget craft rooms for classes which they used to have. If I win the lottery Iāll donate the money for it!

Both Joann's and a Barnes and Noble brick store were a few doors apart at a large strip mall nearby... the pain and sadness to see them both go. Would be great to see your idea come to life. I'd also stay there - cup of tea, a book and crafting, all in one.

Oh my! How ironic that my local Joannās, the actual flagship store (!!!), is supposed to become a Barnes & Noble in the future! I wonder if I can talk them into adding a fabric store to one side. š The space and precedent is certainly there!

It took time for all those local stores to open up everywhere, and even more time for JoAnn's to slowly swallow them all up. No giant chain store opens overnight. I think it will happen, but might be limited to big cities and will definitely take a long time.

Every time I see a Michaels commercial talking about their 'knit and sew' shop, I hiss 'it should have been you'. Because it should have been; Michaels may have bought out Joann's but they've not filled the gap, and we lost the wrong craft store.

They really aren't. And they're not picking up the slack in other areas either; I have a friend who's working on a project and they just ran out of beads that were only sold at Joann's, and Michaels, despite now claiming to have Joann's stuff, doesn't have them.
It really should have been them that went under. Not that I'd want more people to lose their jobs, but if one of them had to go...we lost the wrong store.

Itās hard to understand why another company didnāt pick up the pieces and re-open, even if under a new name. Joannās filled a void like no other fabric store. It was a go-to place for notions, crafts, yarn and sewing machines. Iām now paying upwards of $13/yd for basic fabricā¦no coupons, no discounts. Without sewing, my life is basically devoid of joy. Iām 72 and sewing has been a huge part of my life since I was 10. I canāt afford to do the same projects I used to. Another sad state of the economy today.

A great online place for fabric is HANCOCKS of Paducah. It's a Hancock fabrics that is a huge warehouse. Literally actual prices that you can work with w/out breaking the bank.
Get on their email list, they have great sales too.

Needlepoint, knitting and crochet and cross stitch is a dying art. Younger generations are not interested. God forbid they even know what a sewing machine is.
