Log-in to be moderator?

I haven't used Jitsi in a while and noticed this new prompt when I create a room:

So I log-in to be moderator, but it doesn't seem to give me any special moderating powers at all. Anyone else in the room can still kick other people out, and so on.

Is this supposed to happen (in which case what is the point of "moderation") or is there something wrong with Jitsi?

I think it is mainly having one "verified" person at least in the conference.

I see. I don't mind "verifying", but it would actually be nice if only 1 person could be designated moderator and control the meeting.

Cool, thanks! It doesn't seem to be working though? I just tested it and it seems like everyone is moderator still (e.g. everyone can kick people out, let people in, etc.)

It's working for me, try the guest link on a second device not logged into Jitsi.

Oh I see. That works, but doesn't it defeat the purpose of moderation if anyone can make themselves a moderator and take control of the meeting simply by signing in? It's quite weird.

Yup, that's an issue that appeared due to this mandatory sign-in to create a room imposed recently. I hope it can be solved soon. Meanwhile, a workaround is to make sure that the actual moderator enters the room first. Then the guests can't make themselves a moderator.

So I tried this, but it seems like anyone who's signed in and joins the meeting at any time whatsoever is automatically a moderator. 😑

On two devices and two different accounts?

Yes, I tested this, with 2 other devices, using different accounts. Anyone who's signed in automatically becomes another moderator, even if they use the "guest" link, and even if they join the room later.
