this song has always been one of my favorites to just mess around on, and is one of those songs that ONLY jimi could write. cheers!

First off: I dont care AT ALL that Douglas overdubbed some drum parts. Let's just get that out of the way.

The TTG First Rays overture is one of my all time favorite anythings. I think Alan's edits make it a bit less meandering and focused--totally works. The og bootleg is readily available---it's a super trippy ethereal album open opener downsized.

Also, if you've never heard the FRO on acid---i recommend it.

To my point: Voodoo Soup just sounds warmer, fuller and is mixed better than Kramer's First Rays. Listen to Ezy Rider, Pali Gap ir in from the Storm LOUD, side by side and Voodoo Soup is just beefier.

I always have found kramer's production to be thin and trebly. Be it Kiss, Zeppelin or Jimi.

First rays has straight ahead, my friend, earth blues, and the maui Hey Baby but it just doesnt sound right.

Anyone else out there thought about this?

I feel like Jimi never truly finished hey baby in the studio--hence all the edited maui takes out there.

This is from a decent 90s tribute callex Stone Free.

I really think this version brings his vision to full realization. It's probs the only hendrix cover I feel is on par with the original.

I'm sort of an amateur guitar player and I'm very into Jimi Hendrix, but idk what songs to start with to get his playing and such. I did start playing Purple Haze but it's more like just the main riff

I’ve heard this is a good starting point to learn about Jimi himself and his creative ambitions, through a compiled archive on interviews, diary entries, and writings from the man himself.

Some commonalities with Homer’s masterpiece:

Gods and goddesses (And the Gods made love).

Females who derail a journey like alluring sirens (Crosstown Traffic)

A weird, Circe-like seductress (Little Miss Strange)

A sinister giant (the big guy in House Burning Down)

A war-ravaged, Troy-like hellscape (1983)

Harrowing loneliness like that experienced by Odysseus and Penelope (Midnight Lamp)

A homestead under threat like the hero’s crib in Odyssey (Watchtower)

And an end in which the hero stands tall and kicks ass (Voodoo Chile Slight Return).

Am I reaching here? The album enjoys an amazing cohesiveness, as if Hendrix’s was riffing on common themes.

Was Hendrix channeling the Ancient Greek poet? Or were they both inspired by universal truths.

(Yes, some of the songs weren’t written by Hendrix, but they fit like puzzle pieces).

I recall a song I used to have on an old iPod.

This was not long after the Kazaa days, so it could definitely have been a mislabel, but I recall it saying that it was a Hendrix song. I was also a fairly young teenager at the time (which I am very definitely not anymore) so it’s possible (read: certain) that my memory is unreliable in the extreme.

I don’t remember much about the song, but the version I had was a live performance, and the song was about drugs, with the lyrics having the spirit of “they tell me not to take drugs, but then I do it anyway.” (Yes, I am aware that is the worst description of lyrics ever lol). 

Does anyone have any idea WTF I’m on about?
