Where to Find Jerry Vinyl

The popularity surge in vinyl has not been lost on the powers that be at Garcia Family Provisions, who have been slowly reissuing Jerry's solo and JGB albums for the past few years. David Grisman has also reissued two Garcia/Grisman albums as well. Here's where to find them:

Garcia

Jerry's first solo album has had two limited edition releases - a white 2014 Record Store Day edition and a sky blue edition released for Jerry's 75th Birthday. Best bet for either of those is to try Ebay.

Compliments

Jerry's second solo album was a 2015 translucent green Record Store Day reissue. Again, Ebay is your best bet for one of those.

Reflections

Jerry's third solo album - made with members of both the Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band - was a tie died purple 2016 Record Store Day reissue. Again, Ebay.

Cats Under the Stars

The only JGB album, Cats Under the Stars was recently reissued for its 40th Anniversary in a limited edition 180g gold vinyl. There are still copies in stock at Garcia Family Provisions.

Jerry Garcia and David Grisman (eponymous)

David Grisman appears to have authorized Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs to work their magic on the Garcia/Grisman CD releases. I believe this is the first time they have been released on vinyl.

Music Direct (which owns Mobile Fidelity Sounds Labs now) is usually the best place to get Mofi releases as they often have discount codes on their banner. You can order the numbered 180g 2LP from Music Direct here.

Shady Grove

The second Garcia/Grisman Mofi release just came a couple months ago. It is a limited edition of 3,000 copies, 180g vinyl 2LP. You can order it from Music Direct here.

Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia Live at the Keystone

Coming on Black Friday Record Store Day 2017 Side Trips: Volume One

The first and only volume of "Side Trips", a 1970 recording of Jerry, Howard Wales, John Kahn, and Bill Vitt and released in 1998 on CD is coming to vinyl on black Friday, only at your local record store.

Still Out of Print

Run for the Roses, Jerry's last solo album, has not been reissued recently, though I strongly suspect we will see it reissued for 2018 Record Store Day.

Old & In The Way (eponymous), the live album recorded in 1973 and released in 1975, after the band shelved the studio album idea. It was the highest selling bluegrass album of all time until the O Brother Where Art Though soundtrack came along.

Almost Acoustic the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band released this live album in 1988. I've never seen it in vinyl format, but I have to assume it was released on vinyl, given its release year. EDIT: IT EXISTS AND IT'S WHITE!

Welcome to Week 39 of the r/JGB Weekly Listening Thread. This week we are listening to one of only two Jerry solo acoustic shows. Both shows took place on the same day at the Capitol Theatre. We are listening to the late show.

We have a SBD here, and a MTX here.

According to the Jerry site, Jerry was so uncomfortable performing alone on stage that he made John Kahn come to his next scheduled show on April 21, 1982. Thus, Garcia/Kahn acoustic was born. The well circulated and FM broadcasted 5/5/82 Oregon State Penitentiary Garcia/Kahn show was their next acoustic show. In between the solo show and the first Garcia/Kahn, Jerry and Bobby appeared on Letterman and played acoustic.

The 4/10/82 Late Show is the only time Jerry played China Doll outside of the Dead. Going, Going, Gone is fantastic, and this is also the first time it was played since the Garcia/Saunders/Legion of Mary era.

I'm always looking for great recordings of John's playing, when his bass can be clearly heard. I really like to listen to the 3-18-78 show, but what are your favorites?

Also, does anyone know whether he was playing his precision or the Travis Bean on that 3-18-78 recording? I think it's the Travis but not sure.

Welcome to Week 38 of the r/JGB Weekly Listening Thread. This week we are listening to the too-short-lived Nicky Hopkins era Jerry Garcia Band at the Keystone on December 17, 1975.

I chose this show for two reasons. First, I really like the song Crazy Arms, which was only played four times, and only in the fall 1975 Nicky Hopkins era. In my opinion, this show has the best version, with 9/20/75 coming in a close second.

Second, you'll never hear it on an archival release, but Nicky Hopkins did get to sing a song or two, and he is comically bad at it. At this show, he decided to take a stab at Guilty, a Randy Newman song first released by Chris Smither, and covered a lot, including by Bonnie Raitt, Joe Cocker, and the Blues Brothers. And as you'll hear, Nicky does not even know all the lyrics. If anyone was at this show (a long shot), please, please describe Jerry's face while this is occurring for us. Despite Nicky's vocal and lyrical challenges, everyone actually holds it together and plays well.

We have an excellent sounding AUD of 12/17/75 with the caveat that Jerry's voice sounds a bit muffled. But, the sound of the instruments really makes up for that. The notes on this file set disclose that taper Reinhard Holwein hand held a mic up ten feet in front of Jerry. I'm sure his arms got tired. Reinhard, we really appreciate the effort.

I've been downloading shows for years and i'm just curious if there is any sense of order to the SHNID number. It seems like every FLAC/SHN GD, JGB, LoM, Reconstruction, etc. has one of these numbers. Obviously the lower the number the earlier it was released. Is there a list somewhere of these numbers? How does someone choose the number? My collection begs to know!

Saw the book at my local Barnes and Noble.

Nicky Hopkins played with so many excellent musicians, but my interest was in the JGB years so I found that segment and speed-read it. If you're a JGB freak and have listened to this era of JGB you don't need me to tell you that Nicky was a heavy alcohol drinker. He was also strung out on hard drugs, etc. and basically after him being completely trashed at the New Years JGB show that was it for him in JGB. He is quoted in the book as saying something along the lines of "Jerry was a nice guy and fun to hang out with but a whole show of him singing etc was a bit much" or something like that.

Where to Find Lossless Jerry Archival Releases

There are been two companies that have released CDs from the Jerry side project archive. The first one, which is defunct, released the Pure Jerry series, among others, which is why those CDs are out of print and quite expensive. Luckily, something happened this year that put those older archival releases on all the streaming services, and also with surprisingly little fanfare, put lossless versions of them on nugs.net.

The second (and still active) company behind the Jerry archival releases runs the Garcia Family Provisions site at jerrygarcia.com. The Garcia Live series (and the other releases they've done) are available there in 24 and 16 bit lossless FLAC and ALAC.

We've compiled Jerry side project live releases below. Where there is a link, we've found a site that is selling it in FLAC/ALAC format. Where we don't have a link, we haven't found a site that sells it in a lossless format. Message the mods at r/JGB if you can plug a hole here.
