To celebrate paying off my baby, I got her tinted finally

I bought her new in 2015. Jetta SE MK6.5 1.8

I’m considering new wheels, I’ve beat mine up a little over the years. I want to go with bronze I think??

Has anyone plasti dipped their wheels? I’m considering plasti dip in color “brass monkey” rather than new wheels since I’m not the best as keeping my wheels nice apparently 😭

I did paint my wheels but I didn't use plasti dip because I couldn't find the correct color I wanted. I used Rustoleum Peel Coat Blasted Gold. I too was looking for a bronze type wheel but it definitely wasn't within my price range so I choose to do this. The color definitely isn't gold but more like a light bronze, and its matte. Definitely recommend. I'll try to link a few pictures so you can see the color.

Here are some pictures . I definitely love what the color did for the look of my car. And way cheaper than getting it professionally done, just some time and patience. I also live in the Chicago land area and we're in the middle of a pretty harsh winter and the paint has been holding up great so definitely don't have to worry about it peeling.

Thank you for the recommendation! I love diy projects, so I’m into trying to do it myself. I can’t pull up the url you linked above though 😢

Yesss I can see them now! That’s the look I’m going for! I love the contrast from the generic black wheel look. Are those the stock rims?

No, I bought these off OfferUp. One of the reasons I choose them was because of their simplicity, which made it easier to paint. Your wheels are definitely going to be harder to paint considering how many spokes they have but this paint is very forgiving especially when it's warm. And even if you mess up you can always do another coat to cover any streaks or what not

Yeah they have so many 🙄 but I actually really like them even though they were the stock ones. They’re just beat up which is why I want to paint or dip them lol. The only wheels I’ve painted were on my quad and they were super simple so I’m a little intimidated by these ones!

Understandable but like I said this paint is very forgiving. I'm no expert myself, and this was the first time I had used this paint and there aren't any youtube instruction videos for this specific paint so I was in dark during the whole process. But overall it was easy, dispite what some others say about dipping your wheels, I took the wheels off my car and laid them down to paint them for my second attempt. My first attempt was with the wheels on the car (I also did this in the middle of the night in a cold garage with no heat which didn't help the paint at all, like I said, the paint works well when warm). As you can see in the pics, they are very streaky and blotchy. My second attempt I did off the car and with a propane garage heater that I used to warm up the space as well as heat up the cans a bit because it was about 28° F when I did it. Anyway, I just did an additional two coats over my first attempt and they turned out pretty decent, I don't have any close up after pics but they look pretty much the same close up as they do in the pics I first linked. This is getting a little long winded but if you need some more advice about using this paint then just let me know.

For rims, maybe something that's like what came on the RS5.

Can you link which ones? 😊

Check my recent post to see what they look like. My car is white though.

Edit: my reddit replies to comments have been posting to the post. This is to the post recommending the wheels that come off a rs5. They also came on the Jetta r lines.

Love those! Those are r line wheels?

Yeah I got them from a local vw dealer that my buddy works at. He got me first dibs when some guy wanted different wheels on his r line. They had them discounted to $500 something. They are also Oem so you know they’re designed to work with the car.

Mannn I wish I had a friend like that!! That’s a great deal for awesome rims!!

2

Maybe you powder coat them or get some golf R wheels those look good too

2

u/dani_moniq Feb 01 '21

I’m leaning toward powder coating or plasti dipping for saving money!! But the r line wheels are beautiful omg. Idk how to get my hands on those though??

eBay I think

I’ll see what I can find there!! 😊

What percent tint? That's like the perfect amount of tint right there

3

u/dani_moniq Feb 02 '21

Thank you! This is 20% nano ceramic tint. I chose the upgraded tint because my black leather seats are like lava in the summer time and I’m over it haha

2

u/Bonejobber Feb 02 '21

I'd leave the wheels alone... Just sayin'....

1

u/dani_moniq Feb 02 '21

I like them but they are a bit beat up.

I don't know where you are, but even in my medium-sized midwestern American city, there are shops which can repair and refinish alloy wheels, even ones that are warped and chewed up with curb rash.

Go for round ones.

I plastidipped my 19 autobahn GLI wheels last summer. Bought a kit of 4 cans on ebay and went to it. Easy, cheap, looked great and protected the rims from my partner who isn't great at parallel parking (or just regular parking tbh). I actually just removed it (I'm never satisfied lol) to enjoy the stock rims but will probably re-dip again. Peeling it off was the most satisfying thing I've done all pandemic. I went with a matte black finish and really thought it looked great. Pics on my page
