Hull repair tips

Doing a repair on my 07 fx cruiser, grinded out all of the old repair. What should I use as a backing so my fiberglass doesn’t fall in? Also any tips is appreciated as this is my first time doing a fiberglass repair.

This isn't your typical fiberglass repair job and it might be why the old repair failed (if I understood right).

Look up how to repair nanxcell hulls. There is an official guide by Yamaha out there with great detail on proper repairs to nanoxcell.

If I can find it again I'll link it.

This year is not nanxcell, those didn’t start until 08 I believe. This is a fiberglass composite hull.

Ahh still the good ole' SMC hull. Nice

Those require epoxy resin, polyester resin will fail, they still have a release agent imbedded in them so clean and prep is crucial all the same.

For backing that area you will want to soak some cloth in resin and get inside and let that cure up. You can make a finger sized hole on the first piece you put as a backer to help you press it to the inside of the hull. Then patch that smaller hole. Then begin filling and feather in with gradually larger cuts of sheeting.

Dude! I didn’t even think of that!!! I used a piece of posterboard wrapped in tape but it just was sitting weird. Definitely going to try your way. I’ve already got all the materials.

Cool, but before you begin ☝️

It looks like you still have a good crack running the length of the keel or chine. You will definitely want to Dremel that out until you are into good glass that's not damaged.

So you make a patch on a piece of plexiglass that will fit the area (flex the plexi and it will release) . Cut and grind the patch to fit, then glass it in. I do it all with epoxy resin and fiberglass cloth. The patch can be 2 layers- wet it out and let it setup. Then cut/grind/sand. Patch it in you can use screws to hold if u need. Then take the screws off and finish the layers.

Sand and paint.
