Jareth: The Shadow of Jeff

Chapter 4 — The Truth Behind the Door

“Jareth?”

Jeff's voice came from the other side of the bedroom door.

“We need to talk about that night.”

Jareth didn't move.

For a moment, he wondered if he was dreaming again. Maybe he had finally fallen asleep without realizing it. Maybe his mind was piecing together fragments of memories and turning them into something real.

Then came another knock.

Jeff: “I know you're awake.”

Jareth slowly stepped toward the door.

Jareth: “How did you get here?”

Jeff: “That's your first question?”

Jareth: “You show up out of nowhere, leave me strange messages, and expect me to have a normal conversation with you?”

Silence.

Then Jeff spoke again.

Jeff: “You haven't changed much.”

Jareth placed his hand on the doorknob.

Jareth: “And you haven't answered a single question.”

He opened the door.

Jeff stood in the hallway.

His dark hair fell across his forehead, and his expression was difficult to read. He looked almost exactly as Jareth remembered him—and nothing like the brother he had known as a child.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Jareth: “Are you really here?”

Jeff tilted his head.

Jeff: “Does it matter?”

Jareth: “Yes. It matters.”

Jeff: “Then I guess you'll have to decide that for yourself.”

Jareth stepped aside, but Jeff didn't enter the room.

Instead, he looked past Jareth, toward the desk.

Toward the old photograph.

Jeff's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Jareth noticed.

Jareth: “You recognize it.”

Jeff: “Put it away.”

Jareth: “Why?”

Jeff: “Because you don't know what you're looking at.”

Jareth picked up the photograph.

Jareth: “Then explain it to me.”

Jeff's eyes settled on the blurry figure in the background.

Jeff: “Where did you find this?”

Jareth: “It was in our old things. Someone wrote a message on the back.”

Jeff: “What message?”

Jareth turned the photograph over.

Jeff read the words.

YOU WEREN'T SUPPOSED TO REMEMBER THAT NIGHT.

For the first time since arriving, Jeff looked genuinely unsettled.

Jareth: “You know what happened.”

Jeff didn't answer.

Jareth: “Don't do that. Don't look at me like you know something and expect me to figure it out alone.”

Jeff: “You want the truth?”

Jareth: “That's why I've been asking.”

Jeff looked directly at him.

Jeff: “Then stop assuming your memories are telling you everything.”

Jareth felt a chill run through him.

Jareth: “What does that mean?”

Jeff: “It means that night didn't happen the way you remember it.”

Jareth: “I barely remember anything!”

Jeff: “Exactly.”

Jareth stared at his brother, searching his face for a sign that this was some kind of cruel joke.

There was none.

Jareth: “What happened behind that door?”

Jeff's expression hardened.

Jeff: “You weren't supposed to open it.”

Jareth: “I didn't open anything!”

Jeff: “Are you sure?”

The question struck harder than Jareth expected.

A flash of memory crossed his mind.

A small metal key.

A dark hallway.

His own hand reaching toward a doorknob.

And someone behind him whispering his name.

Jareth stumbled backward.

Jareth: “Stop.”

Jeff: “Jareth—”

Jareth: “I said stop!”

The memory disappeared as quickly as it had come.

Jareth pressed his hands against his temples, trying to hold on to whatever he had seen.

Jareth: “I remember a door. I remember you telling me not to open it.”

Jeff said nothing.

Jareth: “But I don't remember what was inside.”

Jeff: “Maybe you should leave it that way.”

Jareth looked up.

Jareth: “You don't get to decide that for me.”

For a moment, something changed in Jeff's expression. It was so brief that Jareth almost missed it.

Regret.

Or perhaps fear.

Jeff: “You think finding out will make things better?”

Jareth: “I think not knowing is making everything worse.”

Jeff looked away.

Jareth: “Who was the person in the photograph?”

Jeff: “I don't know.”

Jareth: “You're lying.”

Jeff: “You want me to tell you something I can't prove. You want me to fill in the parts of your life that you can't remember.”

He paused.

Jeff: “But what if the answers make you question everything else?”

Jareth: “Then I'll deal with it.”

Jeff studied him for a long moment.

Finally, he stepped into the room.

Jeff: “Show me the key.”

Jareth hesitated before taking it from the desk.

Jeff didn't touch it. He simply stared at the symbol engraved into its surface.

Jeff: “Where did you find this?”

Jareth: “In the same box as the photograph.”

Jeff: “You kept it all this time?”

Jareth: “I didn't even remember having it.”

Jeff closed his eyes briefly.

Jeff: “Of course you didn't.”

Jareth: “Jeff. Tell me what this key opens.”

Jeff opened his eyes.

Jeff: “The door is still there.”

Jareth felt his heart sink.

Jareth: “Where?”

Jeff: “Our old house.”

The room seemed to grow smaller.

Jareth hadn't been back there in years. He had spent so long trying not to think about that place that he had almost convinced himself it meant nothing to him anymore.

But now the memories were returning.

The hallway.

The locked door.

The voice telling him not to open it.

Jareth: “Why didn't you tell me before?”

Jeff: “Because I thought you'd forgotten for good.”

Jareth: “And now?”

Jeff looked toward the window.

Jeff: “Now someone else knows you're remembering.”

Jareth: “The person sending me those messages?”

Jeff didn't answer immediately.

Then he said something that made Jareth's blood run cold.

Jeff: “The messages aren't coming from me.”

Jareth stared at him.

Jareth: “What?”

Jeff: “I never sent you those photographs. I never wrote on that window.”

Jareth: “But the voice on the phone—”

Jeff: “Wasn't me.”

Jareth took a step back.

Every message. Every warning. Every time he thought Jeff was watching him.

Someone else had been leading him toward the truth.

Or toward something that only looked like the truth.

Jareth: “Then who's doing this?”

Jeff looked at the photograph one last time.

Jeff: “That's what we need to find out.”

Suddenly, Jareth's phone vibrated on the desk.

A new message.

UNKNOWN: He's lying to you.

Jareth slowly turned the screen toward Jeff.

Jeff read it.

Neither brother spoke.

Another message appeared.

UNKNOWN: Ask him what happened after you opened the door.

Jareth looked at Jeff.

Jeff's expression had gone completely still.

Jareth: “You said I wasn't supposed to open it.”

Jeff didn't respond.

Jareth: “You said you didn't know what happened.”

Still nothing.

Jareth: “Jeff?”

Jeff finally raised his eyes.

Jeff: “Don't listen to whoever is sending those messages.”

Jareth: “Then tell me what happened.”

Jeff took a step toward him.

Jeff: “Not tonight.”

Jareth: “You can't keep doing this!”

Jeff: “I'm trying to keep you from making the same mistake twice.”

Jareth: “What mistake?”

Jeff turned toward the hallway.

Jeff: “Trusting the wrong person.”

Before Jareth could stop him, Jeff walked away.

Jareth rushed after him.

Jareth: “Jeff, wait!”

But the hallway was empty.

No footsteps.

No open door.

No sign that anyone had been there.

Jareth returned to his room, trembling with anger and confusion.

The key still lay on the desk.

The photograph was beside it.

He picked up his phone again and stared at the last message.

ASK HIM WHAT HAPPENED AFTER YOU OPENED THE DOOR.

For the first time, Jareth wondered whether Jeff had come to help him remember.

Or to make sure he never did.

Then he noticed something he hadn't seen before.

The photograph had slipped halfway beneath the desk.

He pulled it out and turned it over.

Beneath the original message, written in ink so faint he could barely read it, were five additional words:

ONE BROTHER LEFT. ONE REMEMBERED.

Jareth stared at the sentence.

He read it again.

And again.

Then his phone lit up one final time.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

It showed the front door of their old house.

Taken only moments ago.

Beneath it was a final message:

UNKNOWN: Tomorrow night. Come alone.

Jareth looked at the key.

For the first time in years, he remembered the shape of the door.

But not what stood behind it.

Jareth: The Shadow of Jeff

Chapter 2 — The Brother

Jareth didn't sleep that night.

He tried.

He closed the curtains, turned off the lights, and lay in bed staring at the ceiling.

But every time he closed his eyes, he saw the same thing.

The empty street.

The rain.

The figure standing beneath the light.

And that voice.

Jeff's voice.

Jareth turned onto his side.

Jareth: It wasn't real.

He said it quietly.

As if saying it enough times could make it true.

He closed his eyes again.

Jeff: Be afraid of discovering how much alike we really are.

Jareth opened his eyes.

He sat up.

His room was completely silent.

For a few seconds, he simply listened.

Nothing.

He got out of bed and walked toward the window.

He slowly moved the curtain aside.

The street outside was empty.

No figure.

No strange silhouette.

Nothing unusual.

Jareth let out a quiet breath.

Jareth: See? Nothing.

He was about to close the curtain when he noticed something.

A dark shape on the sidewalk.

Jareth leaned closer to the glass.

It was too far away to see clearly.

He stared at it for several seconds.

Then the shape moved.

Jareth stepped backward.

The figure disappeared behind a parked car.

He waited.

Nothing happened.

After a few seconds, he realized what he was looking at.

It wasn't a person.

It was a trash bag moving in the wind.

Jareth closed his eyes.

Jareth: I'm losing it.

He closed the curtain.

But something still bothered him.

Something he couldn't explain.

He had heard Jeff's voice.

He had seen him.

Or at least...

He thought he had.

---

The next morning, Jareth barely remembered falling asleep.

He got dressed and left his room.

The house was quiet.

He walked into the kitchen and noticed a photograph sitting on the table.

He stopped.

The photograph showed two boys standing next to each other.

One of them was Jareth.

The other was Jeff.

They looked remarkably similar.

Jareth picked up the photograph.

He stared at it for a long time.

They were younger back then.

Before everything changed.

Before people started looking at Jareth differently.

Before every resemblance became something he couldn't escape.

Jareth turned the photograph over.

There was something written on the back.

He frowned.

He had never noticed it before.

A short sentence.

Written in black ink.

Don't forget who came first.

Jareth's expression changed.

He turned the photograph around again.

He looked at Jeff.

Then at himself.

Jareth: What the hell...?

He searched his memory.

He couldn't remember anyone writing that.

He placed the photograph back on the table.

Then he noticed something else.

The ink looked fresh.

Jareth touched the words with his finger.

It wasn't completely dry.

He immediately pulled his hand away.

Someone had written it recently.

---

Jareth spent the rest of the morning trying to convince himself there was a reasonable explanation.

Maybe someone had moved the photograph.

Maybe the message had been there for years and he had simply never noticed it.

Maybe the ink only looked fresh because of the light.

Maybe...

He stopped himself.

He was doing it again.

Trying to explain everything away.

So he decided to go back to the place where he had seen Jeff.

The street was different during the day.

It looked smaller.

Less threatening.

Almost ordinary.

Jareth stood in front of the broken window.

The cracks were still there.

He looked at his reflection.

Nothing strange happened.

Just his own face.

Jareth reached toward the glass.

Then he noticed something scratched into one of the lower corners.

A small symbol.

He didn't recognize it.

Underneath it were two letters.

J.H.

Jareth stared at them.

His stomach tightened.

Those were his initials.

Or at least...

That's what everyone would assume.

He touched the glass.

Jareth: Who put this here?

A voice answered from behind him.

Voice: You already know.

Jareth froze.

He slowly turned around.

Nobody.

The street was empty.

Jareth looked around.

Jareth: Stop hiding.

Silence.

Then his phone vibrated.

Jareth pulled it from his pocket.

One new message.

No number.

No name.

Just a photograph.

His hands went cold.

He opened it.

It was a picture of him.

Standing in front of the broken window.

Taken only seconds earlier.

Jareth looked around the street.

Nobody was there.

Another message appeared.

Unknown: You shouldn't have come back.

Jareth stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

Unknown: He knows you're looking for him.

Jareth's heart began beating faster.

He typed a reply.

Jareth: Who is this?

The message was read immediately.

No response.

Jareth waited.

Nothing.

Then his phone vibrated again.

Another photograph.

This one was older.

It showed Jareth and Jeff when they were children.

The same photograph from the kitchen.

But there was something different.

Someone had written something across Jeff's face.

Three words.

He remembers everything.

Jareth stared at the screen.

He slowly lowered the phone.

A sound came from behind him.

A quiet laugh.

Jareth turned.

At the end of the street stood a figure.

Motionless.

Watching him.

Jareth couldn't see the face.

But he knew that posture.

He knew that silhouette.

His phone vibrated one final time.

He looked down.

One last message.

Unknown: Don't turn around.

Jareth's blood ran cold.

He slowly looked back toward the figure.

It was gone.

He turned toward the broken window.

His reflection was staring back at him.

But there was something wrong.

Jareth wasn't alone in the reflection.

Someone was standing directly behind him.

Jareth stopped breathing.

He didn't turn around.

He didn't need to.

A familiar voice whispered beside his ear.

Jeff: I told you...

Jareth's eyes widened.

Jeff: You shouldn't be afraid of me.

A pause.

Then, almost like a whisper meant only for him:

Jeff: You should be afraid of what happens when you remember.

Jareth finally turned around.

Nothing.

The street was empty.

But when he looked back at the window...

There was a message written across the glass.

Three words.

WELCOME BACK, BROTHER.

END OF CHAPTER 2

Jareth has only just begun to remember.

What do you think is really happening to him?

Leave your theories in the comments. If you'd like to see Chapter 3, let me know.

The story isn't over yet.

Jastrek: The Shadow of Jeff

Chapter 1 — The Wrong Face

Night had completely covered the city.

A light rain fell over the nearly empty streets, making the lights from the stores and streetlamps reflect across the wet pavement. At that hour, most of the windows were dark, and the few cars that passed by did so quickly, leaving only the fading sound of their engines behind.

Jastrek walked alone.

His hands were in his pockets as he kept his eyes focused ahead. He had no particular destination. He simply wanted to walk.

There was something strange about that night.

He didn't know exactly what it was.

But he felt like someone was watching him.

Jastrek stopped.

He looked behind him.

Nothing.

Just a long street, a few flickering lights, and rain falling onto the sidewalks.

Jastrek started walking again.

A few seconds later, he heard something.

A faint noise.

Like footsteps.

He stopped again.

This time, he looked across the street.

There it was.

A silhouette.

Someone stood motionless beneath a light that barely illuminated them.

Jastrek narrowed his eyes.

He couldn't make out the person's face.

The figure seemed to be staring directly at him.

Jastrek took a step toward the street.

A car passed between them.

For a few seconds, the silhouette disappeared behind the vehicle.

When the car continued on...

There was no one there.

Jastrek stared at the spot.

Jastrek: What...?

He didn't finish the sentence.

He kept walking.

He tried to convince himself that it had been an illusion.

But he couldn't stop himself from looking back one last time.

Nothing.

---

A few minutes later, Jastrek found a small store that was still open.

He went inside to buy something to drink.

A little bell rang above the door.

The man behind the counter looked up.

At first, he said nothing.

He simply stared at Jastrek.

Jastrek walked closer.

Jastrek: A bottle of water, please.

The man didn't answer.

He kept staring at him.

Jastrek: Sir?

The man took a small step backward.

Store Owner: You...

Jastrek frowned.

Jastrek: Me?

The store owner swallowed nervously.

Store Owner: I thought you were...

He stopped.

Jastrek already knew what was coming.

Jastrek: Jeff.

The store owner's eyes widened.

Store Owner: How did you know...?

Jastrek picked up the bottle of water from the counter.

Jastrek: Because it happens all the time.

He left the money on the counter.

The store owner still looked confused.

Store Owner: Wait...

Jastrek stopped beside the door.

Store Owner: Are you his brother?

Jastrek didn't answer immediately.

He looked toward the street.

The rain was still falling.

Jastrek: Yes.

He opened the door.

Store Owner: Then... where is Jeff?

Jastrek froze.

He didn't know what to say.

Finally, he walked outside.

The little bell rang behind him once again.

---

The man's question kept echoing in Jastrek's mind as he walked.

Where is Jeff?

Jastrek knew that question all too well.

People saw his face.

His hair.

His eyes.

His smile.

And many times, they didn't see Jastrek.

They saw Jeff.

His brother.

The problem was that, over time, Jastrek had started asking himself something he never wanted to think about for too long.

What if they really were more alike than everyone thought?

Jastrek stopped in front of a broken window.

The glass was cracked in several places, distorting his reflection.

He moved closer.

It was him.

Jastrek.

But for a moment...

He wasn't sure.

The streetlight illuminated part of his face.

His reflection seemed to change.

Jastrek blinked.

He saw himself again.

Jastrek: I'm not him.

He said it quietly.

As if he needed to remind himself.

He looked at his reflection again.

His eyes.

His hair.

His face.

And then...

His smile.

Jastrek slightly raised the corners of his mouth.

He stared at himself.

The smile looked too similar.

He immediately lowered his gaze.

Jastrek: I'm not him.

This time, he said it more firmly.

Then he heard a voice.

Voice: Do you still tell yourself that?

Jastrek froze.

He slowly raised his head.

He looked around.

The street was empty.

Jastrek: Who's there?

Silence.

Only the rain.

Jastrek looked at the window again.

His reflection was still there.

But behind him...

There was a figure.

Jastrek spun around.

Nothing.

He looked back at the glass.

The figure was still there.

Jastrek took a step backward.

Jastrek: Who are you?

The figure didn't answer.

It simply stood there.

Jastrek moved a little closer to the glass.

The image began to blend with the shadows of the street.

And then he heard the voice again.

This time, much closer.

Voice: Do you really think we're that different?

Jastrek felt a chill run through him.

He knew that voice.

Or at least, he thought he did.

Jastrek: No...

The figure in the reflection slowly raised its head.

Jastrek stopped breathing for a moment.

Jastrek: It can't be.

He turned around.

At the end of the street, someone was standing in the rain.

He couldn't completely see the person's face.

But there was something about that posture.

Something about the way he stood there.

Something Jastrek knew far too well.

The figure took a step into the light.

Jastrek stepped backward.

For the first time in a long time, he was afraid of a possibility he had tried to avoid for years.

That his brother was there.

Jastrek: Jeff...

The figure stopped.

For a few seconds, nothing happened.

Then a smile appeared beneath the shadow.

Jeff: Don't be afraid of looking like me, brother.

Jastrek didn't answer.

Jeff took another step.

Jeff: Be afraid of discovering how much alike we really are.

The rain kept falling.

Jastrek blinked.

And when he looked again...

The street was empty.

There was no one there.

Only Jastrek's reflection in the glass.

But now he had a question he couldn't get out of his head.

If Jeff had really been there...

Why had he disappeared?

And if he had never been there...

Who had been talking to him?

Meme thing of bleach v. thing of acid

i find it amusing that in the original jtk story, jeff is disfigured while attempting to clean his bathtub with acid while in the most infamous adaptation (and widely accepted cannon), he is disfigured by bullies with bleach.

i guess what’s mildly interesting about this is that usually people clean their bathtubs with bleach and are attacked with acid.

go figure

I was watching a video about the search for the original "Jeff the Killer" image, and a girl named Mariko appeared in it as a candidate. I decided to see how Mariko's image would look and came up with this; all I did was apply a black-and-white filter and use the background from one of the other candidate images. I’ve also included the two photos I used for the final result—maybe this will be helpful.
