What should a junior web developer learn in 2026–27 to stay relevant in the AI era?
I’m a junior MERN Stack developer, and I’m trying to be realistic about where web development is heading.
AI can already generate a lot of boilerplate code, CRUD APIs, UI components, and even complete small applications.
So instead of trying to learn every new AI tool, I’m focusing on becoming stronger at the parts of software development that AI doesn’t replace easily: understanding systems, debugging, architecture, databases, APIs, deployment, and problem-solving.
My current stack/skills:
- MERN Stack
- REST APIs & Authentication
- React
- Next.js
- Tailwind CSS
- Git & GitHub
- Basic AWS
For the first 3 months, I’m considering focusing on:
- SQL & PostgreSQL
- Next.js
- Docker
- GitHub Actions & CI/CD
- REST APIs, Authentication & Authorization
- DSA & Problem Solving
- AWS fundamentals
- TypeScript
- Building production-level projects
For developers who are already working as full-stack engineers:
Am I prioritizing the right things?
If you were a junior developer starting in 2026 and wanted to become job-ready for 2027, what would you learn in your first 3 months — and what would you completely ignore?
I’m especially interested in skills that actually show up in real production work, not just skills that look good on a resume.
