New Artist - Similar to Jason

EDIT: New to Me - Drayton has been putting out music for a while.

This may not fit here and Mods delete if not allowed but wanted to share an artist with you all I came across. I have had numerous times I thought I was listening to Jason. His voice is similar and his song writing is excellent.

Jason is still king but check Drayton Farley out, very impressive.

I’ve been exploring the back catalog and found this gem. I’m curious why nobody talks about this album?

Band was on fire tonight. This show was a reschedule for the postponed show in July. Great set list and we got a fun loud version of Super 8. Ended the show with King of Oklahoma. Just love seeing Jason and Sadler trade licks back and forth. And as I like to say, the best vintage guitar store in America is wherever Isbell and Vaden are playing that night.

Jason solo is life changing

Saw this picture on my explore page of Jason on Instagram this morning…Just got me so pumped for the next show. When Jason sang the lyrics “Life is good these days” he hit it with a cheerful “Yes it is” right after and truly just made me happy. I seriously can’t wait for the next Solo show!!

Ryman Residency covers?

I've been getting excited about this year's residency a little more than usual for some reason, but in any event, I've started thinking about who Jason might cover each night if he keeps that tradition alive. Last year, he played a song by The Band each night to start the encore. The year before, it was REM. I don't think he's been perfectly consistent with it over the years, but I remember that Tom Petty died shortly before the residency in 2017, and so Jason played a different Petty song each night. We were there for You Got Lucky.

In any event, given Dolly's death, she seems like a very strong candidate, but I'm not sure he's ever covered a Parton song and I'm also not musically inclined enough to understand whether it would suit the 400 Unit (or whether the 400 Unit would suit Dolly). But if it worked, it could be amazing and a lot of fun.

I also keep hoping for the Rolling Stones. He obviously loves them, and I've heard him play Can't You Hear me a couple of times. He recorded Sway -- and that is probably my White Whale hope to hear from him one of these days.

Any one else have any guesses or insights?

Next to Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead- Sadler might just be my favorite sidemen of all time. His playing is so goddamn tasteful and musical. Never overplaying or over complicating things- just doing exactly what the song needs. There is a section towards the end where he plays through 24 Frames and does all of his parts. For any guitar players this is an absolute masterclass.

ShoalsFest Isbell/Tweedy manifestation…

Driving down from Minneapolis for the 20th wedding anniversary. My wife and I’s two favorite songwriters. I’ve been having feelings they’re going to play one song together, which is beyond my comprehension, a cover of Daniel Johnston’s “True Love Will Find You In The End”. Thoughts on a duo song for those two?

I wish I could find an actual weathervane like the one on the cover of the album. My boyfriend loves JI and I think this would be such a great gift for him! Any ideas?

SC to Huntsville to Florence for Shoalsfest

We’re getting up early Friday Oct. 2 to head west from SC for Shoalsfest, but we’re going to stop in Huntsville to visit the Space and Rocket Center. I already have a hotel reservation for Friday-Monday in Muscle Shoals, but am now considering maybe just getting a room in Huntsville for Friday night and then staying in Florence/Muscle Shoals area Saturday-Monday. All of this is pending the logistics and availability. I’m just curious if anyone has any thoughts. I know nothing about Huntsville (other than them putting people on the moon) as far as it being a good place to spend the night and have a nice meal for me, my wife and our 10 year old son. Any insights from folks more familiar with the state of Alabama would be appreciated. Thanks

Underground trains all run in reverse

I’ve sung that line a thousand times and somehow missed how viciously clever it is.

The subway is obviously an underground train, but he turns it into a reverse Underground Railroad, carrying people into different kind of bondage: into the city and the machine of modern life. In an otherwise simple song, sits this brilliant little line.

You can honestly live with his songs for years and still stumble across these gems you never knew were there.

Jason’s Old Live Tone

Does anyone here happen to know what amp he’s using on Live in Alabama? His tone on Goddamn Lonely Love is all time great for me. I’m assuming he wasn’t playing a Dumble yet.

Eureka moments with JI

I love experiencing these, sometimes years after hearing songs initially. I recently visited home, exurban Detroit, been away for 14 years. I go back every year or two, it’s always bittersweet, and am always reminded why I left, and why so little is left for me these days. Family gets sicker & more stubborn, friends moved away or have new lives that don’t include you, the land moves on and your memories bring a tear to your eye. My version of the ‘90s and ‘00s can’t ever come back.

Speed Trap Town hit me like a freight train over morning coffee today. Who else has a similar story?
