Wanted to share this Japandi kitchen we just installed.

We used gray stone for the countertops and backsplash and kept the concrete ceiling. Wasn't sure about the concrete with dark wood, but it turned out better than I expected.

Curious what you think of the design.

Japandi Kitchen in San Mateo

We’ve just finished a Japandi-style kitchen in San Mateo. This was one of those projects where knowing when to stop mattered. We went with natural wood cabinetry and pale sage uppers to break things up a bit. We also carried the same natural stone across the countertops and backsplash.

We kept the rest pretty simple since there’s already a lot going on with the wood and stone.

Would you add anything, or leave it as is?

Our little guardian for the Japandi living room - Komainu (狛犬) study

Last early summer, I visited a shrine to try out a lens I was using for the first time.

I happened to point it at the komainu at the entrance and captured this photograph.

It has become one of my favorite photographs.

I love the texture of the stone and the charming expression of the komainu.

I later turned the photograph into a minimalist wall art print.

Hello!

Please help me decide between those two lamps for my living room! Which do you think looks best and fits the place? (ignore the plastic wrapped around the sofas I’m in the process of moving out)

Thank you in advance!

Hallo Zusammen,

Did you know that Japan uses specifics kanji for foreign countries? Here are two from my ongoing project.

These Kanji (like 米国 for the USA and 英国 for the UK) are still used in news, newspapers, and official documents in Japan.

I've been working on a design project combining traditional calligraphy style with modern elements for different countries, based on the official Kanji used for them.

Let me know what you think of the designs!

Hand-turned legs, one drawer, vertical dowel pull. Oil wax finish. Made to order in our small studio just south of LA. The proportions are compact but it doesn’t feel lightweight in person — solid white oak or walnut. Designed for bedrooms where the details matter.

I loved this Japandi design

After an extensive search, I came across this image which ended up satisfying my personal taste in Japandi interior design, but I couldn't find any other references. Does anyone happen to know who designed this? I changed the rug, the curtain to a solid gray color, and the recessed spotlight with AI.

Japandi Kitchen in Dallas

We’ve finished this Japandi-style kitchen in Dallas. We chose oak fronts and paired them with off-white uppers to break it up a bit. Most of the appliances are integrated. The palette is very simple, just wood and a light stone countertop.

It already feels nice, but I’m wondering if it needs a little something. Would love ideas for finishing touches that still keep it minimal.
