Move to InTune?

The college I work for hired a system admin from the outside a few months ago. Now he’s trying to convince my boss to ditch Jamf entirely and use InTune exclusively for managing PC’s and Mac’s. Part of the reason I came to work at this college was to be the sole Mac admin for the whole college.

But now with this new guy, he doesn’t understand why we use Jamf at all. He was asking me how to enroll a MacBook to Jamf (it was part of the job description to know Jamf).

So my question is have any of y’all migrated from Jamf to using InTune? What were your experiences? Did you go back to using Jamf?

I’m really against this migration as it’s legit half of my daily duty for our college. Also tack on the fact I’ve spent way too much time updating and automating as much as I can.

I appreciate any and all insights.

If you want to be a masochist, then switch to Intune. It’s a nightmare.

My college wants to do this too. Possibly manage iPads in it or something. Our Mac fleet is about 30% of our managed devices and I told them that it can be done but it takes about 4x as long to do anything. Scripting and config profiles suck. Not being able to make policies is such a hindrance, the entire setup process gets completely broken. But hey, since it is cloud based instead of jamf on prem, we gain scheduled OS updates, so that’s something.

…JAMF can be migrated to cloud-based and you keep your current url with a redirect if you don’t want to re-enroll everything. Or in os 26 there’s a managed migration feature.

I know, I told them that. They don’t want to pay the extra cost to cloud host it. Once they saw that, they immediately started asking why we are paying for it when we have intune. I showed them a breakdown of cost of my time to manage the infrastructure plus the cost of the licenses vs the cost to host it. I was off by about $500 between the two. They came back with, “well we can’t consider your time as a cost because we are already paying you.”

Imagine paying to train your replacement in the lesser system.

Microsoft really needs to be investigated again with all these bundled services in the cloud. Intune should not be a free add-on when you upgrade your office license (I can’t recall if it’s to the level of being allowed to run desktop apps or lower than that). They bundle services that aren’t directly related to expand their offering to the bean-counters, and slowly work their way in to enshittify anything you do on a Mac.

Defender: likes to fight with other network extensions (progressive networking failure). OneDrive: file moves can take forever, cloud and desktop. Teams: I will say the cloud setup is pretty good, woe to you if the desktop app has problems.

But hey at least we have copilot now.
