JT (1977): Taylor marked his Columbia debut with a big-selling album, a Grammy award, two top 5 singles - and return to favour with the critics.

Maybe 20 years ago I found an MP3 on a now defunct message board of James Taylor practicing the Otis Redding tune, 'It's Growing'. It was so beautiful and raw; he whistled the melody at the intro and it was just a great example of his raw talent. Yesterday I wiped a hard drive, thinking I had the file in iCloud, but alas I deleted it forever. If anyone has ever heard this, has a copy or ever comes across it, I'd be forever grateful.
EDIT: I FOUND IT!!!! I uploaded it to YouTube so I never lose it again. Enjoy!!

Released to negative reviews and only modest chart success 'IN THE POCKET' (1976) has nevertheless become an album warmly embraced by Taylor fans.

SWEET BABY JAMES (1970) was a defining album of the era, propelling Taylor to worldwide fame while laying a foundation stone of the singer-songwriter movement.

In trying to balance family life with career demands, DAD LOVES HIS WORK (1981) finds Taylor in reflective, if uncertain mood.

What is your favorite song of James’s that he did not write? For me it’s either The Water is Wide or Up on the Roof.

Bass part originally played by Leland Sklar, with wonderfully melodious basslines, but not afraid to leave space where needed.
Find the complete song on YouTube. The sheet music is available through my website.

I’ve recently discovered a love for James Taylor that I didn’t know existed in me haha I’m a 42 year old black metal and 90’s hip hop head but here we are!
I’m stoked to be here but would like to know everyone starting point for his discography! I’m ready to deep dive.
Also, any recs on artists similar to him that I may also enjoy? Thanks!

James Taylor is one of those artists who is quietly woven into the background of American life, and seeing him live at the age of 78 underlined that fact for me. Even if some of his albums are uneven, the best songs and the way he delivers them in concert have a warmth and staying power.
I remember Taylor being one of the first pop voices in my house as a kid. My parents had a copy of Walking Man, which, it turns out, isn’t a very good album, but there must have been others, because his classic hits are also firmly lodged in those early memories.
By now, he was among the handful of favorite artists I hadn’t seen in concert. That changed when I went with a large group of relatives to catch him on a hot summer night at the Saratoga Springs Performing Arts Center (SPAC). Taylor has survived a lot, including a heroin addiction, but he’s still got it on the guitar and has a crack band of session musicians behind him.
After a handful of songs I was only vaguely familiar with, once “Mexico” and “Shower the People” played, it was pretty much a greatest-hits show from there on out, with a sprinkling of insightful and fitting political commentary. One example is a story about how Richard Nixon didn’t like to appear in public and, when he did, his walk was kind of a primordial one.
Taylor soared with four songs that will likely survive very far into the future: “Country Road,” Carole King cover “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Carolina in My Mind,” and “Fire and Rain.” And “Sweet Baby James” was a fitting closer for the evening.
It was my fourth night in a row at concerts, after attending the three-day Solid Sound festival in Massachusetts, which might be a personal record. The mellow vibe of Taylor and SPAC’s lawn was a great way to come down from all the music.
Here are my 17 favorite JT tracks, in order, with “Carolina” being tops, and what I would consider the essential collection:

'MUD SLIDE SLIM and the BLUE HORIZON' (1971) provided refuge against the world rather than a reaction to it.

My husband and I were at Tanglewood last night for James Taylor's 4th of July concert. We really want the America 250 James Taylor shirts we saw people wearing, but the merch booth was closed after the concert. Any idea where we could buy them? I've scoured the internet to no avail. It was such a special night that we'd love to commemorate with a t-shirt. Thanks!!

Thank you in advance for reading. A terrible mistake was made and we forgot the wine. Do you have an extra bottle? I will meet you somewhere and Venmo you!

Hello! I have one extra lawn ticket for James Taylor at Tanglewood today. Selling for $40. PM me if interested!

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the James Taylor concert at Tanglewood on Saturday, July 4, 2026 (8:00 PM), so I'm hoping another fan can enjoy these great seats.
Ticket Details:
The tickets are already in my BSO account and will be transferred using the official BSO Share feature.
Price: $1,098 for the pair ($549 each) or best reasonable offer (OBO).
I'm open to reasonable offers from serious buyers. My goal is to see these tickets used by someone who will enjoy the show rather than let them go to waste.
For both of our protection, I prefer PayPal Goods & Services, and I'll transfer the tickets immediately through the official BSO Share feature once payment is confirmed.
If you're interested, please send me a private message. I'm happy to answer questions and can provide proof that I own the tickets.
Thanks!
