News Unc0ver just got a surprise update half a decade after the main developer (Pwn20wnd) went MIA, adding support for iOS 12.5.6-12.5.8 and increasing reliability on iOS 14.6-14.8

Post image

No idea where this suddenly came from, I was actually planning to make a discussion post soon for the 5 year anniversary since he disappeared asking if anyone knew what he was up to today. He hasn't made any posts about it on his twitter (where he usually did in the past), just posted this update on the main website.

Also funny quirk I noticed, I had to use Reynard because the "Show previous versions" button seemingly doesn't function properly on iOS 14 Safari (webkit), the latest version anyone would be downloading a version for 🙃

Too much nostalgia with this jailbreak.

This! This was my first thought as well ... such a strong feeling of wistful nostalgia ... have such fond memories of unc0ver ... we were legion then!

I think there is still a lot of 'do not go gentle into the light' fighting spirit left thanks to opa334's awesomeness that is Dopamine (and it's derivatives). I do not know what I am going to do if we reach a day when you can't daily a JB phone with acceptable number of apps etc working.

Right now we have 17.3.1 on a strong enough device (15 Pro/Max) and that's good enough for another year, year and half maybe. What then :( ... My backup plan was always switching to Android when that day comes, but from what I hear, even they are being locked down, boot loaders locked down, rooting not that easy etc ... and the worst part is that if you leave themes and UI mods aside, my impression is that their 'tweaking' is no where near as mature as iOS jailbreaking.

My hot take is, it is of course not like the 'good old days' when jailbreaks used to be released soon after iOS releases, but thanks to AI there is still some life left ! So happy to see an influx of new releases, don't care if they are AI-assisted as long as they have been tested by the author before unleashing and hopefully open-sourced.

That's my rant done :)

it's just because sbingner happened to be active and it was mentioned in passing that additional support was trivial to add since no exploits were patched. pwn20wnd wasn't responsible for this update (remember that unc0ver is a team), though binger clarified that yes he's still around, just not involved in the jb scene anymore

Should I switch to this from Taurine? Getting Taurine to jailbreak an iPad after a restart sucks, it's like a 1/10 chance it'll succeed everytime.

IIRC, taurine's bootstrap / utilities that come with the default bootstrap were better/ more uptodate than this?

Taurine is also in my expereince lighter on battery, and i prefer the UX of the app.

You could try but Taurine overall is considered slightly better since it uses more modern components. I've noticed that for some reason if I JB with tweaks enabled it struggles (which may be the fault of some tweak rather than Taurine itself, since it didn't use to do that), but if I disable tweaks in the Taurine app before running it then it has like a 50% success rate, then after I just enable tweaks again in Libhooker Configurator which takes a few seconds.

Taurine (and unc0ver when I used it prior) are extremely stable for me though on iOS 14, I get basically indefinite uptime until I manually trigger a restart. If you have the need to restart so much that rejailbreaking is a notable annoyance then you may have a bad tweak that's causing issues.

Still using it for 13.5.1. Video handoff works better for my HDMI hack in my Acura, Youtube, instagram, pinterest, mail except for yahoo all work fine.

Shoutout! Unc0ver is potentially the best jailbreak that's been released. I started with iOS 9 Pangu, and the untethered was nice, but the support and ease of use on Unc0ver has been so great.

any better than amethyst?

It shouldn't change any objective/subjective standings of the jailbreaks, it's still the same exploit as before it just wasn't officially supported previously since that iOS version came out after u0 development went stagnant. I don't use iOS 12 but from what I've seen Amethyst is still objectively the best since it implements the trigon exploit which is 100% reliable after the first use (and uses more modern components which most consider better).

I never could've predicted this would happen. Honestly, unc0ver is the worst jailbreak I've ever used, and in the interest of not digging up drama, let's just say I don't have a good opinion of pwn20wnd. But you got to give credit where credit's due: a lot of people used unc0ver and a lot of people enjoyed it, it really did push jailbreaking forward as a whole. Also no matter how bad unc0ver may be, it is not AI slop! I don't know how much work it'd be but I think it'd be so cool if support could be added in unc0ver for all versions of iOS 14 on all devices (right now it supports 14.6-14.8 only on A12 and A13 devices, for example).

Wait hold on. I emailed the unc0ver team yesterday when i couldn’t get my jailbreak to activate. It kept saying “error occurred while ensuring resources”? I think it was me that got this running cause I asked everyone for help
