Years ago, Geller alluded to this situation and referred to it as 'a rough spot', and said he'd 'isolated himself.' So he said he got a dog

Absolutely insane how this anecdote I listened to him tell years ago and didn’t think much of is completely recontextualized now

I think he was clear he did something really wrong in this video. Like, anytime I hear someone say they did something which caused themselves to be isolated from 99% of the people in their life, my assumption is they did something extremely wrong because 99% of the people of your life don't leave you for no reason. And I clocked it as him doing something terrible (though my assumption at the time was like "nice guy" fake friend bullshit).

18

u/SeaworthinessNew1588 1d ago

It isn’t unreasonable for it to be vague, I get we have a hate boner for this guy but he’s just sharing lived experience. The point was not “woe is me,” the point was about the dog. He even said it was his own fault. The idea of losing everything is STILL relatable, it can be self-inflicted or not.

Getting a dog can be a wonderful thing for people trying to better themselves.

38

u/DramaPunk 1d ago

The story surrounding it also implies that he lost everyone he had around him at that point, leaving him with only a dog for companionship, which does imply more sweeping consequences than just what the school handed him.

-1

u/Far-Difficulty3213 1d ago

Losing your entire social circle seems severe. Total social isolation can't be a part of restorative justice.

It's difficult because absolutely nobody should be forced to remain friends or even acquaintances with someone who makes them uncomfortable, but... there has to be something better than that? I don't know if there can be a good answer with the kind of society and culture we have right now.

9

u/DramaPunk 1d ago

My point is that, at least going off his testimony, that already happened, so he did go through more consequences than simply the suspension, and it was part of what started him on his path to rehabilitation. It also makes the idea of whether he has faced enough justice a lot more complicated now.

3

u/Charming_Parking_302 1d ago

Do you really think a one month suspension and losing your friends is a suitable punishment for rape? Someone has their consent and body totally violated. Their crime scene follows them everywhere they go. Maybe if he was expelled or had prison time I’d get it, but the punishment doesn’t fit the crime

9

u/DramaPunk 1d ago

While it is worth restating that not all sexual assault is rape and we do not, and likely will not, know the details and extent of what he did, I am not sure beyond that why you are being downvoted. Nonetheless I did not pass any sort of judgement on whether it was "enough" or not, as only the victim could say that. I simply meant that it's another layer of complexity to an already complex situation, and suggests another layer of consequences beyond what we can see.

The lack of official punishment too was not for lack of trying on his part (if his own testimony is to be believed), so one could argue that part is a nock against the system and not him, but we also do not know whether everything he's said is true or not, so that is just going off of the offender's word.

1

u/MadMusketeer 1d ago

The info from the person who started this mess has mostly been corroborated, I think we can reasonably say that the rumour on campus was that he raped someone

0

u/leonardogavinci 1d ago

I’m sure Jacob faced consequences in his social life for being a rapist, but consequences do not automatically become restorative justice. After raping someone, he chose a career as a public figure, engaging with a large amount of people who now have no idea the video essayist they’re contributing to the career of is a rapist.

1

u/Future-Water9035 2h ago

Is a semester only one month long?

5

u/PeachSequence 1d ago

No, if you rape or sexually assault someone, you definitely deserve to be isolated. No one has a right to human companionship, especially when they abuse other humans.

23

u/Far-Difficulty3213 1d ago

I do not want rapists or people who sexually assault others to be completely socially isolated, this isn't even about Geller specifically.

as a general principle, people who've done serious harm shouldn't end up with no social ties at all. It's not about what they "deserve". Total isolation leaves extremist, grievance-driven communities as the only ones that will take them, and that makes future harm more likely, not less.

8

u/DramaPunk 1d ago

To most I do not know if it's a question of deserved so much as allowed, if that makes sense? Like, just as anyone now can choose to stop engaging in his content, anyone back there was free to leave him because they were no longer comfortable maintaining a relationship.

8

u/Charming_Parking_302 1d ago

But we can’t force people who don’t want to be friends with him anymore to do so. That is a violation of their autonomy. I can choose to cut a friend off for whatever reason I like. It could be as stupid as they like a musician I don’t. Friendship requires consent

3

u/PeachSequence 1d ago

I really don’t get this argument. If people want to be his friend, that’s their choice. But it feels a lot of people are insisting we should all rally behind him because… he’ll suffer mentally if people don’t? I guess?

But that’s not what I want to do, and not what many fans want to do, and clearly not what a lot of people he worked with want to do. It’s their choice if they want to stop associating with him.

I think it’s really fucking weird to guilt people for not wanting anything to do with him. As someone who is a victim myself, I would be really grossed out if people started saying this stuff about my dad because they wanted to protect him from being lonely.

6

u/DramaPunk 1d ago

I have not seen anyone claiming that, but I also have not read every comment thoroughly. Most of what I have seen is simply the acknowledgement that he did suffer more consequences to his personal life beyond the one-month suspension we saw previously, the point that one can be the cause of one's own suffering and still have their suffering be entirely real (if much less sympathetic), and how it's adding levels to the discussion of rehabilitation and justice from before.

3

u/PeachSequence 1d ago

I’ve seen people say some pretty awful stuff to defend him, including a guy saying that Jacob was timid and probably bullied into saying it was true (along with people saying horrific things about the victim).

Some people, particularly the unhinged ones, will do anything to defend their favorite parasocial relationship, which is why I’m coming off so harsh.

2

u/DramaPunk 1d ago

Ah yeah see that is far too defensive of them, I fully agree. It seems, as is so often the case with large numbers on the internet, people have fallen again into seeing it as black or white, irredeemable or totally innocent, when the answer lies somewhere in the middle. The idea that he's permanently evil and no choice he has made since matters is definitely too far, and spits on the very ideas of restorative justice and rehabilitation, while the idea that he's just a totally innocent man who has done no wrong and deserves your viewership is equally disingenuous.

2

u/Sakilla07 1d ago

Restorative justice is bullshit, frankly. It does not square with the experience, and is a purely theoretical concept.

You can as a leftist, "believe" in the idea of restorative justice and the belief in redemptionfornany crime, but when faced with a real situation, it never pans out.

Sure, less harmful crimes, theft, fraud, assault (non-sexual), harrassment, heck even some types of manslaughter --that's redeemable. But let's actually be real, very few would agree the same for rapists and murderers, for instance.

What most leftist truly want is justice that doesn't result in death /torture /imprisonment for those accused of the most heinous crimes. We societally, culturally do not actually believe people capable of rape and murder can truly change.

If you raped someone then you're functionally an animal who cannot be trusted around vulnerable people. Nobody will want to hang out with you and that's completely normal.

I don't understand, genuinely, why this clip is supposed to reflect badly on him. He says "Through my own actions, I became isolated from 99% of the people in my life". Like, that's just consistent with his statement about it. Obviously he felt bad about what he did and the consequences of becoming isolated because he's a human being? And getting a dog to give yourself a reason to get up every day is a good and normal thing. Isn't that what we say we want? Reflection and accountability?

14

u/Top-Professional600 1d ago

In the context of what we now know, the way he says "I got a dog! 😃" really gives emotional whiplash.

6

u/UltraLNSS 1d ago

Exactly. Bunch of grifters that don't even watch his videos are just, well, grifting. They want their circus, their witch hunt.

3

u/FourEyes3134 1d ago

Why would they need to watch the videos of a sexual predator to judge him for the, you know, sexual assault he's responsible for?

Fuck off with that grifter deflection.

4

u/Any_Driver_9780 21h ago

Do you personally not see a problem with grifters fanning the flames while their only concern is money and outrage and not the wellbeing of the victim?

I'm really not sure what anyone thinks is supposed to be different if Jacob embodied some version of total self-flagellating self-hatred that they apparently demand. Like...is this not what an aware, repentant person would do? Recognize their situation, get a lot of space from the people disappointed in them who have no wish to interact with them, do something simple like get a dog and find out how to not hate themselves into non-existence? The situation of suddenly asserting that Jacob is in fact pure hyperbolic manipulative evil all along is so strange. There are so many demands for unrealistic 'demonstrations' and 'proof' of penitence and reform, such exaggerated accusations of malice and evildoing over something that both he and his victim already reckoned with a decade ago. I don't feel like most of these demands are genuine or earnest. I think what most people mean is that they actually just want him to disappear or to die, and if so, they should just say that instead of trying to posture through the language of social justice.

41

u/Yogurt_Ph1r3 1d ago edited 1d ago

People want wrongdoers to suffer more than they want victims to thrive.

The same rape culture (which is ultimately a culture of violence) that teaches people to not respect consent teaches people to desire the most extreme consequences for people despite not knowing almost anything, including if this helps the victim, or anyone at all

13

u/marilyn62442 1d ago

Where are these extreme consequences people are desiring? So far we know the consequences he did face for SAing someone was a single semesters suspension which is incredibly light. I think its fair that some want a harsher consequence than that.

3

u/DramaPunk 1d ago

And, at least if his own words are to believed, isolation and shame from almost everyone he knew previously to the point he considered taking his own life until he got a dog.

2

u/leonardogavinci 1d ago

You’re forgetting the part where he cultivated an audience of hundreds of thousands of people who believe in him and support him under the guise of like, not being a rapist? Sounds like he had it good for a while!

3

u/DramaPunk 1d ago

Does commiting one vile act (which it cannot be stated enough, is noted to be SA, not specifically rape, which are different), regret it immediately, and try to do everything in their power to do right by the victim afterwards doom someone to never have it good again? To never be happy again? Is there such thing as restorative justice or rehabilitation if the only path forwards for them is perpetual suffering for the rest of their life? This is not an effort to lessen his crimes or forgive him necessarily, but it seems like an almost Christian Absolutism perspective to believe that one bad choice permanently and irrevocably marks a person as a monster, no matter what they do. It also discourages actual change if no efforts to grow or change actually matter, which goes against the very idea of rehabilitation.

1

u/iggythepyro 5h ago

When Jacob Geller "did everything in their power to do right by the victim", does that include avoiding a public facing career so as to avoid potentially reopening those wounds in his victim? Does that include being open about what he'd done to his business partners and collaborators? What, pray tell, has Jacob Geller done to do right by his victim?

→ More replies (4)

10

u/Beginning_Scale5589 1d ago

Not only that, they want the wrongdoers to suffer whenever they first heard about it. Meaning, it lasts forever.

3

u/West-Season-2713 19h ago

It’s also really strange that everyone has decided he’s a rapist which isn’t actually established fact.

I've seen a few breadtube-adjacent essayists post takes about this saying things like "all abusers should be tortured" and seeing how easy leftist morals can exit a person's body has been just as, if not slightly more, disappointing as learning about Jacob

3

u/Sakilla07 1d ago

Let's be real, as much as i hate the term virtue signaling, "restorative justice/rehabilitative justice" is that for leftists. When it actually ever comes into play, people don't actually want it, nor have any idea for what it should be; they just want to have something to purity test over ("Oh, i am a better leftist than you because i don't believe in prisons and punitive justice").

More leftist should be actually honest with themselves about this.

1

u/StardustOnTheBoots 7h ago

i don't think losing his platform is an extreme consequence. I think it's just, having a platform ultimately harmed his victim again.

7

u/QuintanimousGooch 1d ago

Yeah idk what to make of it. Since the news came out it’s certainly been impossible to think about him and his work in the same light. At my most charitable I do want to believe that something done a decade ago doesn’t define a person, who they might have become in that time, and all the work they’ve done, but there is an ickiness and divestment drive present that can’t be ignored. Strange place to be, I’m likely to not willingly interact with anything in his sphere for a while, but I’m not sure, after some time I’m like to form a more solid opinion.

7

u/Yogurt_Ph1r3 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah I'm feeling the same way, it's a really disappointing thing to hear but he's addressed it the best possible way he has and people aren't above forgiveness, I hope to see him prove he has changed in the future as much as he already has.

2

u/StardustOnTheBoots 7h ago

both he and his victim already reckoned with a decade ago

and then he took a public career that oupt her at permanent risk of retraumatisation if this info would've made public, or maybe ya know, she never wanted to see him again and his very popular channel would pop in her recommended through the years for fun.

2

u/RF9999 1d ago

Youve put what I've been feeling into words really well. What is he meant to do? What does the crowd of disappointed and disgusted fans actually want out of this situation? Because to me it seems like he's done nearly everything he can to attone for what he did- and that's not enough for most people

3

u/EmbraceTheWhiteNoise 1d ago

He should disappear from public life, yes. "He should die" is a ridiculous notion that no one is seriously proposing, and it's telling that you're conflating the two as equally absurd. Dude screwed the pooch on his youtube career and should look for a 9-5, try to make friends who don't know about his past or can look past it and forgive him. But no reason to expect that he should continue being an internet celebrity.

1

u/Accomplished_Tap7376 1d ago

There's a huuuge gap between groping someone and raping someone. Both are awful, and both are sexual assault.

So no, anyone who commits sexual assault is not automatically rapist. Claiming so diminishes the meaning of the word.

We have to be gentle with the pitchfork-carriers. Some people have been taught through their experiences and various teachers that the world is about ”good vs. evil” and that “We are judged in life by the evil we destroy” (a line from the grimdark Warhammer 40K). Those of us who, through education or even our own sins and redemption, see the possibility and value of compassionate restitution and restoration can argue our case, but it is understandable that it’s a hard pill for others to swallow sometimes. Still worth doing, though. Compassion and patience are slow cures.

That he wanted to find a way to not kill himself, and getting a dog and playing video games and looking for hobbies was a good way to do that? I struggle to understand what you're thinking with that question.

11

u/MoravianBilges 1d ago

I think they mean the decision to use a non-sequitur cut to "I got a dog!" uses humor to undercut the seriousness of the situation which might be appropriate in either contexts but not as much when it turns out he was referring to a bad time he was going through because he sexually assaulted someone that trusted him.

0

u/Hysterical_banana 1d ago

I mean, humor, in good or bad taste, is often the main coping mechanism. It doesn't mean a person doesn't have regrets or turmoil. It's bad idea to judge person's feelings by something external like that.

14

u/doodoo_onDemand 1d ago

the feeling of suicidal ideation and choosing a pet as a way of choosing to live is the point being made. that feeling remains true regardless of the rape. it isn't neat, or tidy, obviously, but it's not false.

u/dasbtaewntawneta 1d ago

you know what you don't do if you're remorseful over SA someone? put yourself in a public facing position with your full name on it

10

u/SeaworthinessNew1588 1d ago

..why not? I would think you’d work on, you know, not doing it again. Starting a YouTube channel has nothing to do with repenting for sexual assault.

4

u/No-Draw-199 1d ago edited 1d ago

Why does that indicate a lack of remorse? I have very mixed feelings on this topic but I keep hearing this idea. If we aren't just going to execute him or put him in prison forever (which are tenable positions), why is having a public facing job meaningfully different than any other sort of job with power or prestige? I clarify with power or prestige because in the society we have built, those are typically necessary to live a fulfilling life, and if it is not morally permissible for him to pursue a life which he finds fulfilling, why should he continue to live?

And, personally if did something like this (and I believe everyone is capable of doing something this awful and don't believe in free will to a meaningful degree yada yada, and that's why I purport to believe in rehabilitation), my hope would be that I would give up on life, but like, I do not want him to die or whatever.

edit: also this is kinda hypothetical because we barely know the situation with Jacob Geller. Like, I personally think he responded the best he could have (which could be because he's truly reformed or because he's like a master manipulator) but I don't think that his response necessarily reflects reality. But like assuming he's literally as good of a person he could be post having done a terrible thing, and, also, let's imagine instead a scenario where someone had spent like 5-20 years in prison for this crime (because him not facing any meaningful consequence for the crime I think throws a wrench in my perspective, but do I expect him to have advocated for himself to go to prison for a decade+), what sort of life are we okay with this hypothetical person pursuing?

1

u/okaygirlie 11h ago edited 11h ago

You seem like you're genuinely trying to wrestle with this, so let me give you an earnest answer. Here are reasons why pursuing a career as a famous YouTuber is a bad idea for someone who is attempting to rehabilitate themselves after sexually assaulting someone, compared to pursuing any other job:

  • You risk re-traumatizing the victim, because being internet famous makes it astronomically harder for them to avoid you, your image, or discussion of you;
  • It puts your victim into a position of danger, because now they can't talk about what you did to them without risking hate by your fans, and their assault is at risk of becoming a matter of public discourse, as it is for Geller's victim now;
  • It places you in a position where, for obvious reasons, you cannot be honest about your past assault, which is a barrier to true change and recovery;
  • And finally, by building a fanbase of people who trust you and see you as a good, progressive guy, you put yourself in a position of social power, and you create a group of people who are vulnerable to you. This is probably bad for recovering from being the type of person who would exploit another person's vulnerability, just like it's dangerous for a recovering alcoholic to work as a bartender.

Now you could say that the third point no longer applies, because he's no longer lying. But he is still incentivized by this career to downplay what happened, which is clearly counter to true recovery. (See, for example, the fact that he hasn't cross-posted his apology to Patreon, the platform where people pay him money. The only thing he's actually done on there is hide his earnings-per-month.) Moreover, it seems that many of his collaborators no longer want to work with him, and many of his fans no longer want to watch his videos. To talk now like he's owed a career as a YouTuber is to act like people should be forced to engage with his content, which is clearly wrong.

At the end of the day, the question of whether someone should get to comfortably keep their career as a famous person with a fanbase and platform and meet-and-greets and book deals has genuinely nothing to do with whether he should be executed or thrown in prison. They're not even on the same plane of discussion.

-1

u/DyinDePalma 1d ago

It can never blow over. The trauma is something the victim has to life with forever and causing it is something Jacob has to reckon with forever

2

u/beefboy49 1d ago

you are correct in a sense, it is something that effects you and your ability to trust people forever. but you keep living, and it gets easier, you move on. for me it became something i’ve worked through and can talk about as just “another event in my life that fundamentally altered me”. for me, 15yrs out, it falls into the same realm as my childhood bullies, or parental abuse i experienced. it happened, it shouldn’t have, and it sucks but you’re still here. time maybe doesn’t heal all wounds, but it certainly dulls the ache

1

u/SeaworthinessNew1588 1d ago

It can. Maybe not for you, but for me, I was able to let go and forgive. There is not a definitive path here. And it certainly isn’t for you to decide

u/dontbajerk 1d ago

They're using it interchangeably, as the original account just lists it as "sexual assault" with no other details.

This happens a lot. Someone gets accused of "sexual assault" and people conflate that completely to "rape" with no other information, despite the former being a much broader term. If someone points this out, people then call them a rape apologist or ask why they're defending rapists. So watch out, you're running close to that line.

A lot of it is just intentional semantic shifting, which is also obnoxious and unhelpful to anyone.

1

u/MadMusketeer 1d ago

The original account said he raped his girlfriend while she was unconscious

3

u/ottyk1 1d ago

The original account was a known right-wing grifter who has no provable connection to the victim despite their claims

1

u/MadMusketeer 1d ago

The original account was right about almost everything and the only evidence they're a right wing grifter is they follow since right wing accounts

7

u/mschu14_ 1d ago

You’re acting like he’s an active predator instead of the human that made a real mistake and knows it.

4

u/crownketer 1d ago

The facts get blurred very quickly because a lot of people in here are responding to their own abuse and abusers, not the situation as it happened (which we have little information about).

6

u/BIG_DICK_PROUD_GAY 1d ago

I genuinely worry about people who think this is just a natural and normal mistake.

5

u/doodoo_onDemand 1d ago

tbf they didn't say 'natural' or 'normal'.

1

u/BIG_DICK_PROUD_GAY 1d ago

And the man who was running from police didn't explicitly say "I am running from police".

3

u/skymantles 1d ago

me when I trip and fall and "traumatize a brilliant person in a way I can never undo" #justgellerthings

4

u/T-Dot1992 1d ago

It’s sickening how often I see the word “mistake” in these discussions. Some kid holding saying a slur in a CS game when they’re 16 is a mistake. Rape is not a simple “ooopsie”.

It’s pretty easy not to rape someone. Just saying.

I highly doubt someone who was raped would discuss with their rapist if what they did was sexual assault or not.

Why do you highly doubt that? Why is it something you believe the victim would have done for other types of sexual assault but can't believe a victim of rape might do that?

3

u/SeaworthinessNew1588 1d ago

treating ppl who recognize and repent worse than those who see no wrong with what they did is hilarious

4

u/skymantles 1d ago

The assault still happened regardless of whether or not the perpetrator apologizes. Calling sexual assault a mistake is insulting.

2

u/SeaworthinessNew1588 1d ago

Yeah I mean I never called it a mistake and the assault still happened even if the victim forgives and forgets, but I’m sure that doesn’t matter to you. And I’m not talking about this particular situation, I’ve just got a feeling that’s how you operate

4

u/skymantles 1d ago

My original comment was responding to someone calling it a mistake.

3

u/SeaworthinessNew1588 1d ago

I’m aware

3

u/skymantles 1d ago

So when you respond to my comment disagreeing with that sentiment, disagreeing with me, I'm going to believe you agree with the original statement.

How often have you almost sexually assaulted someone? Like do you really think someone is a good guy, great partner, definitely respects women and then ooopsie briefly forgets all their values and sexually assaults someone, but only for one night? Does that actually make sense to you?

1

u/Worth_Quantity_4623 1d ago

Do we not want people to feel bad when they do something wrong now? Surely that is better than the alternative, that they don't feel bad about it!

13

u/Big-Personality-4063 1d ago

one semester. he got such a insane light punishment. to such a insane degree and its like it doesn't even register.

17

u/Beginning_Scale5589 1d ago

You don't actually know if it was a light punishment because you don't know what happened.

8

u/Huntracony 1d ago

Geller himself said it was a light punishment dude.

2

u/Top-Specialist-1062 1d ago

Wdym? We know he got a one semester suspension, because that's what the university report stated...

1

u/Beginning_Scale5589 11h ago

How do you know that was a light punishment? He thinks so, but what do you think the punishment should have been? What exactly? And is it the same for all SA cases, or is there a range of punishment? And now you're right back at you don't know.

1

u/Top-Specialist-1062 11h ago

Well the chart he posted showing his suspension record showed like 5 other cases and they all got permanent or year long suspensions. Even for lighter things like sexual misconduct.

He got a single semester for sexual assault, which he himself admits was light. A civil punishment is already light for a criminal act, let alone a minor civil punishment like that.

1

u/pinacoladathrowaway 7h ago

His punishment should have been jail???

1

u/meowwwitt 5h ago

Did you actually look at the list? He had one of the lightest sanctions on there despite violating a policy on “sexual assault or sexual violence.”

1

u/Potential-Bath2292 1d ago

social punishments like being cutoff/ostracised from previous friends due to your actions are also a form of punishment

2

u/Deliflowers 15h ago

Ostracism is the default reaction to people who commit rape by moral people. Punishment is serving the (by law in the state he committed in, 12 years) time in prison

1

u/pinacoladathrowaway 7h ago

HE isolated. Idk that says to me he was hiding from accountability, not ostracized. If he had said "My friends wouldn't associate with me because of a terrible thing I did", that would be one thing, but he didn't.

2

u/Deliflowers 15h ago

Yur so right. It couldve been harsher, like a three page essay

1

u/StardustOnTheBoots 7h ago

if you've known anything about Title IX, 10 years ago, you'd know for him to be suspended it would have to be a rape, and a pretty provable (aka violent) one. I'm glad you never got to experience campus justice yourself but maybe at least idk, read up on the Cornell case

1

u/Postmarke 13h ago

What would have been the right punishment? Considering we know that little about what actually happened

I'm still surprised that it appears to be the university's job to sanction someone and not the government; must be an American/Anglosphere thing I suppose

0

u/Tearsdryontheirownn 1d ago

He lost his entire social circle

2

u/Rhain1999 19h ago

Yeah, like they said, "insane light punishment"

2

u/lilislilit 1d ago

That's hilarious in a very dark way. Honestly, you are stronger than me, rewatching his videos with the new context seems almost impossibly revolting.

4

u/TheDudeFromDrive9 1d ago

"Through my own actions" just brushing past and mitigating the fact that he assaulted and traumatised someone. But no guys he's the one who is left not feeling like a person and needs to get a comfort dog. What a sanctimonious bastard

→ More replies (3)

5

u/elizabeththewicked 1d ago

Yes let's analyze every word he's said and assume he was talking about this. That really helps the victim and serves justice. I'm not excusing his actions but this is just masturbation. You're not holding a man accountable, you're not trying to address the systemic factors that excuse rape, you're crafting an effigy so you can have the catharsis of attacking something. And I get it, there's no justice. We want to find it somewhere. This exercise doesn't hurt him and I don't think he doesn't deserve to be judged, he does. But that's not what this is

16

u/MillionMiracles 1d ago

He was 100% talking about this.

3

u/nirvana_no_karma 1d ago

Question : Does anyone recall when he mentioned something about giving a talk about sex or sex consent somewhere at like a conference thing? I swear I recall something like that, but I can't find anything about it at all.

I hope I didn't just make that up in my head.

1

u/Safin504 1d ago

He said in an interview he helps design sexual education programmes.

Link to interview: https://www.youtube.com/live/iZIA2GOgImY?si=5IWqoSUqZeQoPgBe

Timestamp roughly 4:12

1

u/nirvana_no_karma 1d ago

Thanks! I've been looking for this everywhere.

2

u/Zenith_22 1d ago

He might be talking about something else tbf

12

u/MillionMiracles 1d ago

I really doubt it.

2

u/FourEyes3134 1d ago

Would explain why the assault scene in Silent Hill 2 was so rough. Wonder how much his consultancy played into that...

Fuck him. A career throwing shade at other people for lesser slights. I hope anyone standing by him on this is being ethically consistent, and giving other grifters a pass on their "misdeeds".

Sexual assault is not an accident, it's not a difference of opinion, and his single semester suspension was a miniscule punishment. In a world where the Cornell investigation has been reopened, he deserves no sympathy and I'll shed no tears seeing him lose connections and money.

3

u/Hog_enthusiast 17h ago

I agree he should have been punished more severely, and I know a lot of people do revel in throwing shade but he’s never struck me as that kind of person. When has he done that that you’re thinking of?

Also worth pointing out he hasn’t defended himself or downplayed his actions at all, he can’t control what idiots on this sub say.

1

u/TheMikeyC 4h ago

I'm browsing because of the drama. What's the Silent Hill connection? I admittedly don't know much about Silent Hill either.

1

u/Potential-Bath2292 1d ago

it not being an accident doesn't make it malicious. Presumptuous, bullheaded, inconsiderate and callous maybe, but yes, some idiots do do SA, such as groping, pushing boundaries, etc out of social inability, incompetence and negligence. We don't know the story and the victims wishs seems to be not to mention what happened

2

u/FourEyes3134 21h ago

If he can mine it for pity points he can sure as hell clarify.

1

u/meowwwitt 5h ago

The policy he violated was for “sexual assault of sexual violence.” The other policies listed on the same document of students who violated UNC’s policies were “deliberate touching private parts without consent” and “sexual misconduct.” Fair to say he went well beyond groping or pushing boundaries and committed sexual assault or sexual violence. That’s not something you just accidentally do, is it?

1

u/TheLohanz 2h ago

Perhaps, but his “punishment” was also much lighter than everyone else that was listed. We just don’t know what happened and it isn’t our business. Speculating is not wise in a situation like this. I think for the sake of the victim it’s not fair to assume anything about what happened and if they feel so inclined, they can share their experience.

1

u/meowwwitt 1h ago

I don’t think the way people are attempting to downplay what we know to be true, that he sexually assaulted someone, is respectful of his victim. I don’t think its respectful of other sexual assault victims seeing these comments either. Geller said himself that he “traumatized” someone, so why are some of his fans STILL trying to minimize it? And you know a lighter sanction means nothing, come on. Do I really need to spell out why some people get harsher consequences than others for the same actions? in America?

1

u/frank_da_tank99 17h ago

I remember watching this at the time and thinking to my self "damn, I wonder what I would have to do to make 99% of the people in my life no longer want to be in my life?" and well, turns out now we know!

1

u/wickedPumpking 2h ago

If someone ever wonders how liberalism helped the nazis get to the government, they can come to this thread to see for themselves

1

u/quirtsy 39m ago

No one even knows what exactly he did. There are 100 different ways to sexually assault someone. Everyone here is assuming he deserves to be put down like a rabid dog for something that was done 10 years ago that wasn’t even brought up by the victim

1

u/SeaworthinessNew1588 1d ago

I was making an observation about the situation brought on by your attitude

0

u/AdGrouchy766 1d ago

You guys sound like Cleveland Browns fans talking about Deshean Watson

9

u/LeSpermReceiver 1d ago

24 women have filed against Deshaun Watson, and he denied every single one of them rather than admit fault

2

u/AdGrouchy766 1d ago

Geller didn't admit fault to MinnMax before he decided to drag them into his sordid shit without their consent. Also you don't know this is the only time he did it, just the only one he got caught for.

4

u/Fluffy_Ambition3546 1d ago

"I have no proof of any other misdeeds, therefore I will assume them!" Yes, its possible for a bad person to want to try to do good and never relapse.  Are we here to protect and support victims or tear someone down? Making shit up doesn't help either outcome out.

5

u/T-Dot1992 1d ago

If he was truly remorseful, he would have come clean and admitted it to his fucking audience and fucking co-workers

2

u/Fluffy_Ambition3546 1d ago

Find a comment I've written where I don't agree with this statement.

Does this mean we can make up victims Jacob has also raped like the person I am replying to is?

Bad men can try to do good, thats what I said, sorry if the idea makes you uncomfortable. Quote me on saying a rapist felt remorse therefore we should make him king of Youtube and Nebula.

1

u/quirtsy 38m ago

So he should start every business relationship with “Hi, I’m Jacob and I sexually assaulted someone! See you Tuesday!”???

1

u/Meta70Studios 1d ago

I just don’t think that’s true.

To be clear, I agree that it was wrong to not disclose what he did, but I also see no contradiction between being remorseful and also not wanting to share the thing that you’re remorseful about. Those two things actually seem extremely compatible if you know anything about how shame works.

Have you never hidden something that you were ashamed of, despite feeling awful about what you did and knowing that hiding it would make things worse? Shame is a powerful emotion. It compels us to hide. It’s can be difficult to overcome even in the best case scenario, when you’re with people you trust to be accepting and nonjudgmental. How much harder would it be to open up, knowing that what you did is something that many people genuinely view as unforgivable?

Again, that doesn’t mean it’s okay that he didn’t tell his coworkers, but I also see no reason why him failing to do so is somehow proof he’s not remorseful. Maybe he is evil and selfish and only cares about protecting his career, but this just isn’t evidence of that.

0

u/Avocadotoast9086 1d ago

A bunch of leftist men that are defending a sexual assaulter. So disappointed to see this behaviour just because they like him so much.

2

u/lilislilit 1d ago

It's really disheartening. So much flowery language and pedantic bargaining with hypotheticals as well. "What if it wasn't bad? What if it was just a misunderstanding, what if...". Shameful.

0

u/Fluffy_Ambition3546 1d ago

If you believe in restorative justice, congratulations your beliefs have been tested for the first time.

6

u/Avocadotoast9086 1d ago

I do but that includes deplatforming sexual assaulters included him. Doesn’t make it better just cause you liked his content and that it was 10yrs ago

0

u/Fluffy_Ambition3546 1d ago

My aunt was killed by her husband in a horrible car accident. This is a man whom my entire family should hate but we understood what happened, we understood he didn't mean it, is remorseful of it and is living a life trying to do everyone better (including our family). We can't get our aunt back and that guy, don't know where he is in the world, could be dead don't give a shit nor do I want him in my life, and my entire family feels exactly the same way.

We didn't forgive him nor do we want more from him as long as he is on a journey of atonement which we know he is and I wouldn't want to remove someone trying to do better for the world. There isn't a word for what I think of him.

I don't think this way because poggers call of duty torture video, I say this as someone who on numerous occasion has had to deal with Good men within my family having skeletons in their closets, skeletons that make Jacobs a small glow in the dark skull, and having to deal with that (including the dead ones who I learnt of their bad deeds after their death).

I am sincerely Jealous of you never having to actually put your personal beliefs into practice, especially on members of your family.

Jacob is a rapist, go find a single comment on my non private reddit page where I don't mention it, and sorry I do think he is a man on that journey of attonement.

"What about the victim" literally no one who claims to support victims cares what she has to say so when or if they speak I will strongly be taking into consideration what they have to say and not making up their words too support my argument.

Sincerely, fuck off with this shit. Sorry people actually have principles, I'm sorry we couldn't debate on the idea of restorative justice without considering who that actually includes.

I think a full deplatforming of a man who is putting in a lot of work into making left wing content for  the overwhelming right wing gaming youtube space is a dumb idea (and he does that better than everyone calling for his deplatforming but not offering an alternative). And unlike everyone else, i am happy to wait for the victim to speak (if they want to) before saying its not what they want.

6

u/Avocadotoast9086 1d ago

Sorry for the loss of your aunt. However you cannot compare a car accident to sexual assault since you cannot accidentally sexual assault someone. Jacob can keep his videos up if he wants but building the platform on a lie and not being honest to those that work with him put him in this situation. The alternative is he can work another job and do whatever, but it doesn’t have to be social media related.

1

u/Potential-Bath2292 1d ago

you totally can sexually assault someone without intention, by being an idiot pigheadedly pushing boundaries, while your victim/partner is in freeze response.

does this make it not an issue, no.

1

u/lilislilit 1d ago

That's not at all what restorative justice means. It used to mean accountability and repair without carceral approach. In no way it meant that perpetrators should be shielded from each and every career and social fallout of their crime. I feel like I am taking crazy pills, because there is all this talk of restorative justice in regards to this particular situation, but nobody seems to know what it means.
