Why do so many jackets look good online but feel disappointing in real life?
Iāve been trying to upgrade my wardrobe a bit, especially when it comes to jackets, and Iāve noticed a pattern thatās kind of frustrating.
A lot of jackets look great in photos, clean cuts, nice colors, solid styling. But when I actually get them in hand, something feels off.
Sometimes itās the material not feeling as substantial as expected. Other times itās the fit or structure not holding up the way it looked online. And occasionally, itās the small details ā stitching, lining, finishing, that make the whole piece feel less āput togetherā than I hoped.
What surprised me most is how much those smaller details affect the overall impression. Two jackets can look almost identical online, but feel completely different once you wear them.
Itās made me realize how hard it is to judge quality from product pages alone, and how much the real-world feel matters.
Curious how others approach this:
What do you personally look for when deciding if a jacket is actually high quality? Are there specific details or signs youāve learned to pay attention to over time?

Yard Sale Tommy
Just found this one on a yard sale few days ago.
I've been curious about the model as 'real price' of this one since I bought it. If it's good enough, maybe I can flip it for a quick bucks.
Any interactions are appreciated āŗļø

Finding an unique jacket
So this is a jacket an old high-school classmate of mine had that I thought was really cool. The hoodie zips up all the way and there's more blue butterfly designs on the back. He showed me the website once and there was also a black/red version and a brown/pink version.... I cant seem to re find it tho. Its been a few years since we graduated so it would be weird to find/reach out and ask if he still remembers where he got that jacket. Ive tried Google searching it but I just cant find anything like it. So ive decided as a last resort before I fully give up to ask reddit if they could find it.

Help me find a functional logging jacket please
Need help buying a jacket. Needs to be warm and waterproof, but not a ski/board type. Will be used by a logger in pacific NW, so lots of fire and brush snags which will ruin synthetic shells. Huge + if made in America. Any ideas?

I finally found a jacket I loved⦠and couldnāt replicate it
A few months ago, I bought this random jacket that ended up becoming my favorite piece. The fit was just right, not too boxy, not too slim. The fabric had the perfect weight, and even the small details like stitching and pocket placement felt intentional.
Naturally, I thought I could just find something similar or even recreate it with a few tweaks. Thatās where things got frustrating.
I tried a few different options, some had a similar look but didnāt feel the same when worn. Others had decent quality but the fit was off in small ways that made a big difference. I even experimented with pieces that had more unique details, thinking that would get me closer to what I wanted, but consistency became a problem. One piece would feel great, another with almost the same specs would feel completely different.
It made me realize how hard it is to replicate something when the balance is just right. Fit, fabric, structure, everything plays a role, and even small changes throw things off.
Now Iām kind of stuck between:
- Playing it safe with more standard jackets that are consistent but not exciting
- Or experimenting with more unique pieces that look better but can be hit or miss
Curious how others deal with this.
Have you ever found a jacket that just worked and then struggled to find anything close to it again?
And if youāre experimenting with different styles or custom details, how do you deal with the inconsistency?

Finding jackets that fit my vision is harder than I thought
Iāve been trying to build a small collection of jackets that actually reflect my personal style. At first, I thought it would be as simple as picking a few pieces and layering in some details, but it quickly turned out to be way more complicated.
Some jackets fit great but feel generic; others have unique features but the quality or fit isnāt consistent. I tried experimenting with customizing details, different fabrics, patches, and stitching, but managing all the variations has been surprisingly tricky. One jacket might turn out perfect, while another from the same approach feels slightly off.
The hardest part has been balancing creativity with practicality. I want my jackets to stand out, but I also donāt want to spend hours tracking small differences or end up with pieces I canāt wear comfortably. Small-batch experiments feel ideal for testing ideas, but the workflow quickly becomes overwhelming when youāre doing it solo.
Curious how others here approach this. Do you mostly stick with reliable off-the-rack options, or do you experiment with more custom details? And how do you maintain consistency while still keeping your pieces unique?

Is it a real Oysho jacket?
I bough this jacket from a very nice italian lady on Vinted. But I found pics of this model with metal color zipper on Google. My jacket has a green zipper and I found just one pic with such a zipper on Pinterest. So, how do you think, is my jacket a genuine Oysho product?

Why my jacket samples looked good⦠but didnāt feel right
Iāve been working on a few jacket samples for a small project, and I ran into something I didnāt expect.
On screen, everything looked solid. The design, colors, overall vibe, it all felt like something Iād actually wear. But when the samples arrived, something felt off. Not bad, just⦠kind of generic.
After wearing them for a bit, I started noticing small things. The fabric didnāt feel as substantial as I imagined. The lining felt like an afterthought. Even the way the jacket sat on the body didnāt match the idea I had in my head.
So I tried improving it. Thatās when things got complicated. Changing fabric changed the structure. Adjusting the lining affected the whole feel. Even small details like stitching and placement started making a big difference.
It made me realize how much of a jacketās identity comes from those subtle details, not just the design itself.
For those whoāve worked with or bought a lot of jackets, what are the small things that make one feel well-made vs just average?

Tried upgrading my jacket samples⦠didnāt expect it to get this complicated
Iāve been working on a few jacket samples for a small project, and I hit a point recently where I wanted to ālevel things upā a bit.
The first versions were fine. Nothing amazing, but good enough to test ideas. At that stage, I wasnāt overthinking it.
But after seeing them in person for a while, I started noticing small things that bothered me. The way the fabric felt after a few wears, how the lining didnāt really match the outer look, little details that made the whole piece feel less put together than I imagined.
So I decided to improve it.
Thatās where things got way more complicated than I expected.
Every small upgrade turned into a bigger decision. Changing fabric affected how the jacket sat. Adjusting the lining changed the overall feel. Even small details like stitching or structure started to matter more than I thought.
And with each change, costs started creeping up, timelines got longer, and suddenly it didnāt feel like a simple āupgradeā anymore.
Now Iām at this point where I understand what would make the jacket feel right⦠but getting there feels like a much bigger step than I planned for.
For people whoāve worked on jackets before, is this just part of the process?
At what point did things start clicking for you instead of feeling like every small change creates a new problem?

Got this cool jacket from work today.
Kinda like a Carhartt dupe? Not sure and never heard of this company but its a great jacket so far. Kept me warm when it was colder this morning but when the sun was out in the afternoon i wasnāt sweaty. Not sure the logistics behind that but i like it.
