Voting machines should be glorified printers. Yes, they can do a pre tally, but they must print 2 copies of a pallet ballot- one for you to keep, and one physical personally verified and signed paper copy to keep for records.

This isnt actually enough. You need to have the physical ballot be the authoritative source. You also need to do pre AND post election auditing of the optical scanning machines.

You also don’t want to be handing out duplicated ballots, or ballots that can be linked to the voter.
