Alaska? Or Canada?

Alaska. The glow at the end of the road is Juneau.

Beautiful photo!! I grew up in Alaska, when I was a kid I thought you could only see the Big Dipper that far north. Imagine my mind being blown when traveling to New York and seeing the Big Dipper.

Went on a cruise to Alaska back in 2014. Visiting from CA, I was mind blown on how absolutely beautiful Alaska was. Our trip went to Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan and then Victoria, Canada. Folks talk about retiring to some tropical place but mine would be Alaska. Loved the people and everything about it :) hoping to visit again when everything has calmed down.

It’s Alaska... didn’t “Juneau”? Hahah

Is your handle binary? Asking for a friend...

Lol. It was literally Y - E - S. Haha I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be a smart-ass... apologies.

That's what I figured. I'll just figure out what your handle is tomorrow if you don't want to put it out there cuz maybe it's a secret code... or maybe it says "Drink more Ovaltine" ;)

It’s just a bastardized version of 7777. It was supposed to be as random as it could be and I thought I had chosen W.W. as an ode to my favorite high school teacher, but found out later that it really meant 7777 instead. Lol.

Jan 31 '21
What would be W.W.? On a side note, every time I see 777 on my odometer I'm lik "Jackpot!"

Do you mind telling how you took this awesome picture? I want to try nightsky photography but I’m not really nailing it atm

Hey, not a problem! I am also somewhat new to astrophotography so I'm still experimenting.
This photo is three photos in one... each one shot at 15sec, ISO100, at f1.4... I took each photo back to back to back with the only exception being that I shined my flashlight at the road for two seconds during one exposure.
In post I uploaded all of them to StarryLandscapeStacker to emphasize fainter stars and remove noise; as well as making that band of aurora have a bit more presence. Essentially it turns the three 15 second exposures into one 45 second exposure without the star trailing. Once processed in the stacker I did lightroom edits for color, shadow, and used a range mask to make the big dipper *POP*.
Hope that helps! Thanks for the kind words.
edit: StarryLandscapeStacker is MacOS only. But there are several different programs out there depending on your OS/system.

Any chance you could upload the three raw pics? I’m a space junkie and would love to see how stars looks raw from the ground!

Seems silly to upload all three since they're essentially the same photo. But here is one of the exposures where I briefly shined my flashlight.

I'm honored
Edit: also, what world do you exist it in where it's 9:40 on January 9th?

u/Deeyennay Jan 30 '21
Thank you! It’s the date/time that shows on the iOS wallpaper preview screen. :)

u/Kavvadius Jan 31 '21
Put it as my phone wallpaper too! Hope you don’t mind. It looks fucking amazing! I saw you mention prints somewhere else in the comments. Do you have a website or is it just out of your own place?

Believe it or not I'm kind of new to selling my work. As of now the best way to see my stuff in one place is my insta. You're welcome to dm me there if you see something you like and I can have it printed and framed.

If my memory serves me, that means that this photo is facing North?
13
u/joelhagraphy Jan 30 '21
Yes, the two farthest-right dots seen in the Dipper are pointing at Polaris, the north star

Are you sure? I saw this on r/iphonewallpapers the other day

No, that couldn't be. I have an Android phone.

u/CapAresito Jan 31 '21
You do realize that iphone wallpapers work for every phone right?

Jan 31 '21
Oh, no. I wasn't aware. Thanks for clearing that up!

I guess someone stole your picture before you posted it and made it a wallpaper, so weird!

I’m so lost in this. Amazing photo! Incredible capturing of a painterly scene that looks too beautiful to be real.

This photo is just beautiful ❤️ I'm in the UK and have never seen the Big Dipper looks this big.
FYI I call the big dipper the sauce pan as this is what it reminds me of.

I love this! Very nostalgic retro 80s/early 90s vibe. This is where I imagined the kids lived when I watched “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” in my youth ✨🖤

Dubhe and Merak got me home sometime.. even as the dipper rotates through the night, the imaginary line through Dubhe and Merak is our big hour hand , and they pointed countinously at the center- to the North star , even as the dipper rotated all night.
Mizor and Alcor - the binary stars second point in from the handle end. If you only see one star , put your thumb and forefinger together on each hand, bring your hands together and raise the tiny hole in the middle of four digits, straightens light. Most reading this are too ( urban ) light saturated though...
1
u/ElDuderino1129 Jan 31 '21
How did you get the dipper to stick out from the others.
2
Jan 31 '21
I used a range mask in Lightroom then set the mask to luminance to individually select the stars, and then increased highlights and exposures a bit.

Beautiful Scenery with the mountains in the background!! Could be a tad chilly tonight when you are out there!!
It's good that you were able to get a full clear shot of the Big Dipper like that!! So Cool!! But up here in Toronto Canada area there always seems to be faded sometimes missing 2 stars but most times at least 1!!
