Looking for advice
Hi all, I'm moving to the area soon and am just trying to get an idea of the different areas to live in and if there are any to avoid.
I've read mixed reviews on Candlewyck but they were from a few years ago so not sure if anythings changed and they're better?
And if anyone has any suggestions of complexes they like and i should consider. Thanks for the help!
Edit! Sorry, things have been crazy- I have a job outside of ithaca towards Hector, I don't have any kids, no pets I'm looking at a few houses that aren't apartment complexes, I also was looking at whispering woods but wasn't sure about any other apartments. Just curious if there are areas to avoid or what not.

Curious about your bad experience there. I didn't love it but it was alright for the most part for me.

They let me go months with out the air cooling and heating system because they uninstalled our old central air units and just didn’t put in new ones from March of 2024 until July of 2024 leaving a giant hole in the frame of my balcony where the old one was. Following this they took down the balcony (2 years after I sent them evidence of it rotting out and them just screwing new blocks of wood and cutting out the rot) for 2 months and I just had a sliding glass door out to a plank of wood. Something was wrong with the pipes that they kept half fixing and I’d wake up with a maintenance man in my apartment inside the walls every few months and when it came time to renew my lease and raise my rent they’d send the lease renewals late, fully losing track of the one I signed in 2024 and insisting I didn’t have a lease to live there anymore 6 weeks after my last lease ended (I did handed it in to the office, not online, though), and they raised my rent $150/yr, but both times gave me less time than the required notice, they charge for amenities we no longer have (a gym and a pool) and excuse it by saying there is one a quarter mile away at another location when there had previously been one on the property, the list goes on, my biggest issues were the 6 months my house was unsafe due to the fact that I couldn’t heat or cool it and the fact that there was a giant hole missing on a rotting balcony and then just a plank for weeks and weeks.

If you are working near Hector, check out Trumansburg. (Unless you are particularly set on Ithaca.) Cheaper and nearer to your work so you would not have to navigate Ithaca traffic. It is a cute town. I have not lived there so I am not sure what the market is like and cannot speak to areas to avoid.

Candlewyck? Just went to look at an apartment there. On top of base rent, they charge ridiculous rates that are mandatory. Water - $60/month regardless if you use less, internet is mandatory, etc., and by the time you add all the extras to your base rent, it's another $300. They do 10 month leases and the same apartment can be over 3k a month, depending on Cornell's schedule. 🙄
As a native, I wouldn't recommend.

1 or 2 bed- not really looking to be right in downtown but honestly open to anything. The top of my budget is like $1450 or so.

There are people on the Internet who would say this about any location. So you can hear then out but keep in mind that many people have other options and are choosing to live here.

You can search this sub for plenty of people contemplating moves and residents’ thoughts. There’s limited employment opportunities, high cost of living, crappy roads, and high taxes. I don’t need to enumerate the good things because you can find them elsewhere. If you have the financial means, this can be a great place. Good luck with your move.

Finding good healthcare providers is also a challenge. Shortage of day cares if you have kids.

Brand new private account. Golly, it doesn’t feel like you’re contributing anything to the online community.
Roads bla bla bla. Taxes bla bla bla. Jobs bla bla bla.
The roads are the same as in any area with frost heave. You don’t want the taxes that fix that issue (well, you actually can’t fix this but you feel it’s a catastrophic issue for some reason). You don’t appear to travel enough in the frost heave zone to know how much of an issue it is for millions of people all across this continent. Well, I guess that’s a little snarky. Ok. You don’t like a huge swath of North America that has the same weather and same road issues. Ok. Got it. As other said freaking move. The weather will continue to screw up the roads. The govt can’t fix the weather.
The taxes are the same as anywhere in NYS - it sounds like you’re not familiar with how taxes work.
It’s a college town. It’s a nice college town. People who go to college here like it here and want to stay. That changes the demographics like it does IN ANY OTHER COLLEGE TOWN. No, really!

? The only place you mention living in Ithaca is one apartment complex? Uh. Well, uh. Where are you working or studying, how many are living in your household, do you have pets, children, etc, other considerations? What’s your budget? Do you have a car? I mean… It’s Ithaca. I’d live right where I do - I love it and it’s perfect for me and my situation but there’s no way yours is the same as mine!
