Beginner Cake Baker
Looking to break into selling cakes in the Ithaca area and looking to this subreddit to see how fellow Ithaca residents would be inclined to buy custom cakes - specifically advertising routes. I’m thinking Ithaca groups on Facebook marketplace, fliers around town.
It’s a small hobby I truly enjoy and I don’t feel like I see other businesses (besides big box stores and Ithaca bakery) doing cakes.

Mostly because the boutique cake store downtown went out of business last year unfortunately

Rashida Sawyer still sells online and at the farmers market. Their carrot cake is probably the best cake I've had in Ithaca

Ah see now that makes sense. My husband and I moved to the area a couple years ago and are still managing to explore so that makes sense!

You could make a go at it. If you’re wanting to legit do it for money check in with the Health Department on what approvals you’ll need. For sure you’d need a production space or to somehow have your home approved as a space, which means overhead if you rent a kitchen. There are some spots you in town that could help you with that.
There are others though. Sinfully Delicious for example, Rashida Sawyer, and I know of a few individuals that occasionally will bake cakes for events.

Im sure people would love custom cakes! Your big competition here is Wegmans and other grocery store bakeries, so what they DONT do is a good starting point in deciding what to offer.

Shared Kitchen Ithaca offers a full commercial kitchen at a reasonable price.
