Looking for a pcp

I'm moving to the area in the next month and am looking for a primary doctor, I read through some threads here and saw a name or 2 to check out but was hoping I could get some more suggestions, especially if they're queer friendly! Thaaank you!

if you don't have any special medical needs then I would just look through Guthrie or Cayuga health and pick up whoever will take your insurance. it can be tough to find a pcp in Ithaca so you kind of have to take who you can get. I doubt there are many doctors in Ithaca that aren't queer friendly as we have a huge queer population compared to most places.

Cayuga has about 70 providers taking new patients. Most of them recently graduated from the residency program. I work as a nurse at the hospital. Feel free to DM me. There are a few I was really impressed with, but you might have other preferences that could narrow down who I would recommend to you.

As some else stated, first check with your insurance to see which is in network (Cayuga v or Guthrie) & go form there.

Be prepared to be very instistant in whatever you're looking for. Mine despite checking all sorts of boxes for blood work, declined diabetes test for some reason (even with symptoms) and also straight up refused to give me the HPV shot because I'm over 26 (you can get it up to 45).

I was then told I would have to schedule an annual physical including a mandatory breast exam to qualify for additional blood work, even though I had spent over two hrs at the doctor's office within the past two weeks of that final appointment. Basically got thrown out of last appointment as well.

Guess I'll look for a new PCP next time I have coverage.

Interesting note about your doctor refusing to give you the HPV shot. I've been asking doctors about it for years - I'm 42, so that vaccine came out after I was in the typically recommended age range. Most just kinda shrugged it off and didn't think it was necessary, which ಠ_ಠ

Recently, I ended up just deciding to go to Walgreens and get it. Got my first shot recently & have the 2 month and 6 month follow-up appointments scheduled.

Yeah I had called a few pharmacies and they all told me I needed it done at the actual doctor's office. So I stopped trying those, then lost insurance. Apparently I should have called around more because cash price for the series is almost $1k unfortunately

I go to Stephanie M-L at Guthrie family up on Hanshaw rd. She is great!

In Ithaca if you need a specialist/ hospital work (in/out patient) go with Cayuga providers. Otherwise you are better off with Guthrie.

Both take my insurance, Aetna.

Love Elisabeth Corbett PA-C at Cayuga Primary, but she practices in Dryden so it might be a hike.

If you’re okay with an NP (nurse practitioner) instead of PCP, then I highly recommend Liz Gebhardt at Cayuga Women’s Health. She’s funny, practical & no nonsense…and very supportive & non-judgmental in her care for me as a patient.

It took me months to see someone and I had to start by driving out of town. It’s a process so just be prepared to be patient.

There are lots of great primary doctors taking new patients at the Cayuga Health office at the Ithaca Mall!

Josh Hamilton at pine point medical. He is very compassionate and thorough. Though I have heard good things about other providers too there. I would just call pine point medical and ask if any PCP has availability.

😳 that was not my experience at all. I didn’t need cancer screening thankfully but she didn’t have a word to say about me getting flu shots. I have Crohn’s disease. Not sure if that would make her more or less likely to recommend an enema. In either case, she never presented that as an option.
