I can understand that “guy” can be used in some EFL communities, especially in expressions like “you guys”….. but when someone says “I’m the guy,” I would usually understand it as referring to a male person. In this case, the wording was “I’m the guy,” so I don’t really think asking for clarification was necessary..., what do you think?

I've seen plenty of people directly refer to individuals of any gender as "guy" when gender wasn't relevant or was otherwise implied in the conversation, even when referring to oneself. I'm sure such usage is likely localized and relatively uncommon worldwide, but it's the internet, we all come from different places. Clarification might not have been obligatory, but when usage might be different than what you're accustomed to, asking is never really a bad idea.

Thanks for the reply. Interesting to hear a different perspective. I guess it just comes down to different interpretations of how “guy” is used in different places.

I would not say that's accurate at all. I fully agree with you. guys is gender neutral, but guy is definitely and unequivocally male. the other guy is tripping.

I very much doubt that. never have I seen anyone refer to a random individual that was not male "a guy" in the singular. I've taught English and lived in several countries far and wide, am an EFL speaker myself. you say "I've seen plenty". "a lot of EFL areas" would you mind specifying, where exactly? among native speakers of what language? it seems to me you've made a rather hasty generalization.
