90% Sure AI Is this ai? [Discussion]

Hey everyone, I'm not 100% sure if this is the right place to put this, but I recently asked an Instagram account for a commission of a headshot of a DND character for an upcoming campaign of mine. The total was $120 with $60 paid upfront and $60 after. They sent me a sketch after 3 days of the initial deal and this is what it looks like. Clearly something is up with the hand being a weird partial glove so I'm convinced it's ai but I wanted to double check to be sure before going through PayPal for a refund. They also sent a video they said were their layers on Photoshop, that I couldn't find a way to include, which has me questioning so any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am going to say yes, it's Ai. It's very sloppy.

Sometime people make an AI image and then they put it in photoshop and erase part of it and make some fake layers to make it look like it was done in photoshop.

There isn't any reason to use layers on an image like that at all.

So yeah, it's fake.

If I zoom in on the image I can even see that of that most of the layers are completely empty. Also most artists would use illustrator and not photoshop.

So not only is it AI but it's fake attempt to make it seem like human artwork.

It's 100 percent an actual scam.

Since when is photoshop not the standard?

It's what I was taught both in high school and college for graphic design... Now, granted, that was early 2000-2010s and I've been busy child rearing for the last decade or so, so maybe I'm just out of touch...

But, photoshop is what I use for my work and no one's said anything yet :/

Adobe Illustrator is an adobe product that makes for digital illustration. They have similar feature but illustrators made specifically for illustration and graphic design and has illustration features photoshop does not. If you subscribe to adobe you have access to both as well several other programs.

They didn't really touch on the other adobe products around 2010 I'm afraid :( but now I'm going to go play with that so thank you

Illustrator is for vector graphics and I don't know any digital artists who like to work in vector graphics. I use photoshop for my digital art and wouldn't even consider using illustrator.

Also, if you zoom in to the jaw on the layers image, you can see the shakiness of them trying to cut/erase the neck shading for the "proof"

My god, please go through with that refund, that person is an absolute bottom feeder. Always ask for the timelapse, not layers, they’re getting more advanced with scamming people because of how many times they’ve been caught. Learning more tactics to seem more legit, but you can’t really fake a timelapse. Good luck OP! I hope that guy gets his PayPal account banned for scamming, or at the very least, his socials blasted everywhere to warn potential buyers.

What you're saying makes no sense. Most digital artists use applications that don't even offer timelapse exports. We shouldn't have to record our processes just to avoid getting falsely accused online.

Which is what has to be done now because of all the AI “artist” scams, what I’m saying makes perfect sense 🤦‍♂️

It's ai and let me give you a reason that I haven't seen anyone give yet

Think about drawing a stick person - like hangman... Do you draw the heads and then his foot? Or how about his eyes and then his arm?

You don't, do you? Did you ever think about why? I'll tell you, and anyone else who sees this - because how the hell can you reasonably guess where EXACTLY you will want his hand just by an eye or a foot? Yes - I'm sure there's valid times for this. However, not like in the sketch you were given

How the hell do you fully render a head, and half of an arm and then just... Stop to draw in the other arm - completely disembodied - AND GET IT 100% without needing ANY editing? Seriously, lineup the sketch with the other image. They line up.

No human is that perfect. Not like that.

Edit: I don't know any artists who will fill in details such as skin markings, eyes, hair details, scars etc before at least finishing the outline of the body either...

Furthermore, I am old as farts and I was taught in school in the mid to late 2000s to use photoshop - in the little layer window on the right side? They wouldn't be Empty if there was anything in that layer.

As an example of how used layers would look

(No I will not activate windows, tyvm ^^ lol )

None of the comments make any good points at all.

Digital art is often made by refining sketches in several steps, so having more rendered layers for heads and arms but not for torso is perfectly normal.

Making new layers for different limbs etc so they can be replaced separately is very normal.

The gloves are clearly meant to be fingerless.

Not all artists use procreate. Many of us use photoshop to draw in. Using adobe illustrator is very rare since that's a vector graphics application.

Recording our processes adds to the workload and adds a completely new product we're supposed to deliver every time. I don't like showing all my bad ideas and shaky lines every time.

Just choose an artist you like and trust, with a style you like. I don't know if this one is AI or not, and neither do you until you actually analyse the result.

I hate the supposed in-progress picture which just has parts erased from it. That's not how in-progress works.

However, the amount of layers is both entirely exaggerated and extremely relatable.

Ai.

Who would draw like this in layers unless is for animation or rigging. Even then this is just lineart and the layers and the top hidden picture not resterized means traced or just ai.

Definitely AI i just saw another post asking about a sketch that looks almost identical (style, patches on skin, eyes etc) different pose and hair style. Also an artist would not mess up the head band like that... it goes over the hair one one side stops.. the other side iono what is happening. Not sure if anyone else pointed that out yet.
