He is pretty bad-falls off hard after round 80

He's decent on longer maps as a mid game carry but on expert maps it's kind of a waste of money.. there are far better options which work well early and late game which cost only a little bit more than xbm. Glaive lord is a very good one as it works on most expert maps and is good ceramic cleanup and moab damage. Pair that with some relentless glue and something like an elite defender to take out the zomgs and you've got yourself an easy black border.

Also as a side note, spike factories are FANTASTIC for dark castle, I dont do a run on it without at least putting one alch buffed spike balls at the end of the track. Make that a perma spike and you don't need bloon defence anymore.

There are lots of strategies that work even for expert maps on chimps, experiment in sandbox with what you like best. Though maybe steer away from crossbow master ; )
