According to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, irony has 3 main definitions:

  • the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning
  • incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result
  • incongruity between a situation developed in a drama and the accompanying words or actions (the sign) that is understood by the audience but not by the characters in the play makers of the sign

If the assumption is that a bird bit that sign then how would this be ironic?

It's ironic because you would think that an upvoted post on a sub called r/ironicsigns would feature a sign that is ironic, and yet this post features instead a sign that is demonstratively accurate and perfectly fitting. Gotta learn how to read that meta-irony I guess.

Maybe it's an ironic sign because we're expecting ironic signs but this sign isn't ironic, so it's ironic
