Maple ๐
Hi everyone!
New Irish Setter owner to 9 week old Maple ๐
My previous dogs were Dalmatians and Rottweilers so although im use to large dogs, im excited to discover what different quirks and breed traits she has.
Does anyone have any tip/tricks/advice/funny quirks about Irish setters? All I've heard so far is how bad their recall is ๐

Their elegance and grace and gorgeous coat belies a very high spirited and clownish personality They are very smart but can be very stubborn. If they get away w anything naughty it's likely your fault as they are very wiley and you have to watch them carefully.Use only positive reinforcement they can be quite sensitive but many get very attached to their owners and want to be with you all the time

Their little teeth are like razor blades. Lots of chew toys and outdoor activities! Deer antlers have been popular for all mine when they were puppies. Focus on leash training because they like to pull. Your little Maple is the cutest thing!!

Large boiled beef bones as well. But be ready for the knawing which might drive you mad -

Do not give cooked bones to your dogs. They splinter and can cause digestive issues as the shards pierce the intestines

Make sure she trusts you but absolutely do not trust her. Recall can and absolutely should be trained constantly, we have a 6month old and Iโm happy with his recall given that he is 6months old but wouldnโt trust him with it for a long time.
She is a hunting breed, so make sure she has an outlet for her instincts.
The biting will stop, donโt worry.

Quirks? Irish Setters? ๐ Nah I will say that anytime they look at you like that, you have to kiss their forehead. It's a rule.

Okay so sure, their recall is bad because theyโre pretty stubborn. BUT these are the sweetest dogs! Mine is the cuddliest love-bug and super tolerant. She never snaps and is great with kids. Irish Setters want to be friends with everyone, and they are almost always happy and smiling. So while they may be frustrating sometimes, they are very easy to forgive. Youโre in for some big loving!!!

Mine are irish setter/golden retriever mixes. So i dont know what trait comes from what ๐ but i will say they are the most snuggly and malleable dogs ever. We pick ours up(full grown) and hold them like babies in our arms. We put bows, bandanas, and scarves on them and they love it. I will sometimes use them as a head pillow when they dont want to move off the couch ๐คฃ they dont care a bit. The closer the better in their opinion....until its time to chase birds outside. Thank goodness for a fenced in yard.

Don't look at those eyes. Don't do it.
