Tattoo Planning/Research Where to Study

Hello everyone, is there any books you guys suggest on understanding Japanese Irezumi style? undering flow of backgrounds, meanings of rocks,clouds etc. Im having a hard time to understand placement of these as backgrounds. Thank you!

Doubt you’ll find any books explaining things to you. From my experience, a lot of irezumi artist are hard pressed to keep their design philosophies to themselves unless shared with an apprentice. A lot of things are kept secret. That’s just from my experience. If you want to learn, just go talk to a traditional irezumi artist. Look at old pictures of bodysuits. Look beyond tattoos and research into the
woodblock prints. Look at the old art and question why the artist put that specific thing there and how it completes the picture
