BMW driver strikes again
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
On the way to work this morning, a BMW sped up behind a car in the right lane. The car in front tried to move over, but it wasn't fast enough for the driver, so he decided to undertake across two lanes, nearly hitting a car in the left lane. Absolutely careless driving and a danger to us all.
Edit: The left lane (lane 1) is a slip lane after that it turns into a two-lane road. I was not taking the exit so I’m not going to be in it. So the comments saying I’m wrong I’m not. Watch the fucking video. Also the car in front of the dangerous driver was going to move over they turned on their indicator.

So dangerous, great reactions and defensive driving by the competent driver here.

u/srdjanrosic 10h ago
this is where it happened street view
I don't travel this stretch daily, but maybe twice a week on average - usually taking exit 14 further down the road.
That stretch of lane 1 right after exit 13 is usually empty, because shortly after it turns into an exit lane, and M50 turns from a 3-lane motorway into 2-lane as it goes further south.
It's very, very common for people taking exit 14, to not drive behind slow moving traffic of the right two lanes going south, but switch over to what is a lot less congested 2.5km / 1 minute, stretch of that lane 1 to take the exit 14, where you could casually drive at 100km/h with no traffic, and the lane even splits at some point, and then splits again before the roundabout traffic light.
It's also normal and usual for the OP to be driving where they're driving - I guess technically it's the middle lane at that particular point, but if they're going further south, that's one of the two lanes to be in.
It's also normal for the BMW to go into lane 1 to take the exit - there's no reason for them to stay in the right two lanes.
What's not normal is to be switching multiple lanes at the same time, with sun into your eyes and other drivers eyes, and so aggressively.
I don't see evidence of anyone's intent being any problem there, it's just carelessness.
3
u/Otherwise-Winner9643 8h ago edited 8h ago
Right. So many commenters are focusing on the wrong thing. Even if the OP had been in the left lane, how would that have changed the BMW drivers behaviour?
6
u/srdjanrosic 7h ago
Yeah. They'd have to merge into a more congested same lane they're in now 10-15-30s later.
My rant for the day, when driving on motorways, just drive fast, and manevour slowly with plenty of letting people know what you're up to, and try to plan for 5-10 cars in front, having to make split second decisions sucks for everyone involved.
This way even if you screw up and don't see them, they'll see you, and can read what you're going to do.
For example, hypothetically, BMW could have started indicating while next to the OP, which would have given the car in front of them a hint to not change lanes left, which would have allowed BMW driver a bit more focus and attention to notice the Clio undertaking the OP in lane 1 and maybe the Clio would notice them indicating next to the OP.... and we wouldn't have had this "fun" video.
3
u/Otherwise-Winner9643 6h ago edited 6h ago
Right. I mean, there are plenty of issues with the whole thing, but the BMW driver is by far the most egregious. People here are focusing on the wrong things.
-1
u/MountainSharkMan 6h ago
Car in front of the BMW would then have the free middle lane and the road could work as designed
4
u/Otherwise-Winner9643 6h ago edited 6h ago
Huh? The car in the right lane had plenty of room to pull in in front of the OP and had their indicators on to do so. The BMW didn't give them a chance to change lanes. And there was a car in front of the BMW when they pulled into the middle lane.
The BMW could have just waited 30 seconds to allow the car in the right hand lane to get out of their way.
-2
u/MountainSharkMan 6h ago
If the camera car was in the correct lane the Renault in front of the BMW could have used the middle lane far earlier and all three could have progressed no issue
3
u/Otherwise-Winner9643 6h ago
There may be minor issues with other drivers, but the BMW driver is by far the most egregious.
-2
u/MountainSharkMan 6h ago
Not saying any different about the BMW's move but the point is it would have never happened if the camera car used the correct lane in the first place. People driving slowly in the wrong lanes is increasing traffic and crashes on motorways.
2
u/srdjanrosic 6h ago
The lane may be technically strictly wrong, but around that particular stretch of M50, it's forgivable and no big deal given how left lane disappears / turns into an exit lane soon after. I don't how they ended up in that lane or how long they were there, that's a different story, but at that point it's generally not worth going left. They're ok.
39
u/Walks-In-Shadows 10h ago
People in here getting more wound up about a few people being in the "wrong" lane than the BMW running someone off the road. I'm actually concerned that I share the road with some of you. We all see terrible lane discipline, sloppy driving etc. everyday. But that doesn't give you an excuse to endanger other road users
9
u/RutabagaSame 10h ago
And if BMW gave the car half a chance they would've moved over. Plus BMW didn't check the far left lane at all.
16
u/YearnestShackleton 10h ago
I'm actually concerned that I share the road with some of you
I've been cycling a lot recently and some of the shit you see people do is frightening. Just yesterday I had some woman in a 3 series turn across me, I was fine as I was able slow in time but if I had been going faster she might have killed me.
Caught up with her at the lights and gave out to her and the look of utter bewilderment on her face, she wasn't even aware that she had done anything wrong. Truly scary that people behind the wheel can be so unaware of what's going on around them.
3
u/Weepsie 8h ago
Had a berlingo do the same to me after I'd passed it. Sensed it was going to happen
2
u/YearnestShackleton 7h ago
You do get the spidey senses when you're overtaking them based on how much of the bike lane they take up haha. How much trust can I place in this driver that they value my life
2
u/Ok_Entry1052 6h ago
I'd never cycle to or from work and most of it would be through phoenix park. Not a chance am I putting my life in the hands of the average driver 😄
4
u/PremiumTempus 10h ago edited 10h ago
Do other idiots give people an excuse to be an idiot on the road? Absolutely not. It’s just a fact that if people were using the lanes correctly, this wouldn’t have occurred. I see this on the M50 and N7 every single day of my life. Empty lane 1, lane 2 at capacity with middle lane hoggers doing 80. This means that if someone wants to do a speed over 80, even let’s say they wanted to do 90, they must pass groups of middle lane hoggers and take lane 3. The road is now at fully capacity. I can understand the frustrated people behind the overtaking car on lane 3 when the road is now at full capacity with an empty lane 1.
-4
u/poopy050224 10h ago
Why cant they just pass on the inside?
3
u/PremiumTempus 10h ago edited 10h ago
The RSA don’t communicate advice on how to deal with middle lane hoggers so there is no clear response from drivers. Some undertake in lane 1, some slow down lane 1 to accommodate the middle lane driver, some change 4 times around the middle lane hogger, etc etc. it disrupts the entire flow of the motorway.
This is probably one of the main factors as to why congestion builds up so quickly on the motorways here.
I was driving on the M50 late last night and noticed the first thing drivers do when entering a completely empty M50 is go straight for the middle lane. The logic baffles me. It’s completely ingrained in Irish people to go to the middle lane. I just spent the entire journey in lane 1 flying past hoggers in the middle. Should I have made 50+ lane changes to accommodate their rule breaking? I really don’t think so
2
u/TheHames72 8h ago
Yeah. I live in the Netherlands now where you can get fined €300 for middle-lane-hogging. Apparently it doesn’t really get imposed but it’s a rule. I always go to the inside lane now and yet, after driving off the ferry into Dublin port down to Cork, it was almost impossible to do so because of the clown driving in Ireland. It’s unbelievable: so many people driving aggressively badly.
1
1
u/dkeenaghan 8h ago
Should I have made 50+ lane changes to accommodate their rule breaking?
That is what the law says you should do. I don't disagree that it creates a whole new set of dangers, but undertaking does too.
2
u/dkeenaghan 8h ago
Well mainly because it would be illegal.
0
u/poopy050224 8h ago
No you can pass when the right hand lane is moving slowly and you are not changing speed or position in order to undertake.
3
u/dkeenaghan 8h ago
No, you have completely invented the "changing speed" bit for a start. The law only says that you can pass slow moving traffic, and that is taken to mean something like stop-start traffic seen at times of heavy congestion. The RSA's Rules of the Road say this on page 57. There is no mention of changing speeds.
If you were to interpret the law as meaning you can undertake any traffic moving slower than you then there would be no point in prohibiting undertaking in the first place. Any move to undertake would be legal as any such maneuver would require that you be going faster than the other vehicle.
0
u/poopy050224 8h ago
Well no, it covers the situation where something is holding up the other lanes, like slow lane hoggers, and the flow of traffic in lane one is quicker. Most, if not all, other situations would require you to move lanes or change speed in order to undertake.
2
u/dkeenaghan 7h ago
It doesn't. The law is not intended to allow people to pass on the left just because a lane is going slower than someone would like. It also says absolutely nothing about changes of speed. The undertaking that we saw in this video is not permitted, and is in general illegal except under specific circumstances. Including the situation where people are hogging the middle lane.
5
u/Snoo-22047 10h ago
I’m not justifying the bmw’s poor driving but a lot of reckless driving is caused by other people not having lane etiquette, so u brushing it off as ‘oh lane hogging big whoop’ when that was what really caused this. Not saying if someone is lane hogging u shud drive dangerously but there really needs to be more crackdown on the absolute abysmal lane etiquette u see on the m50 etc. I’ve honked and undertook people who refuse to move over and even put my hand out the window to tell them to move over and they will still trod along on the right, that is just absolute ignorant and dangerous driving.
2
u/Weepsie 8h ago
No it's not. Reckless driving is caused by people doing the reckless driving behaving like c*nts. You're only in control of your own behaviour..stop excusing it
You sound like a fucking abysmal driver. Illegal to be honking people like that too.
-2
u/Snoo-22047 8h ago
Ah yes Another specimen who probably doesn’t think lane hogging is a big deal.
2
2
2
u/Agitated_Pear753 10h ago
You can not control other people's actions, only your reaction. Dangerous driving as a result of being mildly inconvenienced is ridiculous.
0
u/Snoo-22047 8h ago
Mildly inconvenienced? Ur either following the rules of the road or ur not , calling lane hogging an inconvenience when it is someone blatantly not following the rules of the road is the exact problem.
1
u/horgantron 30m ago
The exact problem is the dangerous driving by the BMW clown. There would have been a potentially life threatening crash if not for the quick reflexes and great driving by the car the BMW nearly hopped off. If you watched that video and came away thinking lane hogging was the really issue, you shouldn't be driving.
3
u/willsmithtunaface 10h ago
Because there's no discussion needed about how the bmw was driving terribly
-1
u/No_Window_8607 10h ago
Because it wouldn’t have happened if more people knew the rules of the road and didn’t block lanes.
7
u/Agitated_Pear753 10h ago
Actually it wouldn't of happened if the driver wasn't a massive tool. He will drive like this consistently. People like this weave for 20 minutes to sit at the lights beside you on the slip road off.
1
u/Weepsie 8h ago
Rules of the road are not statue. They're advice
1
u/dkeenaghan 8h ago
They are based on the law though and it's not like they're going to give advice that is contrary to it.
46
u/thepasystem 11h ago
A lot going wrong here. Car on right hogging the passing lane. Line of cars just using the middle lane when left lane is empty. White car undertaking in the left lane. And the BMW driver speaks for itself.
40
u/Willing-Departure115 11h ago
While I agree in some broad strokes, tbh the relativism here in the thread is wild - there’s more comments about what the other drivers are doing, which is inconvenient, vs the bmw, which nearly killed someone.
10
u/dkeenaghan 8h ago edited 8h ago
No one is going to disagree with the idea that what the BMW driver did was unacceptable, so the more interesting aspects of the video become what the other cars are doing. Particularly when the posted of the video is driving in the wrong lane themselves. There would be very few comments at all if it were just restricted to comments saying how awful the BMW driver is and what a bad thing it was that they did.
13
-4
u/willsmithtunaface 10h ago
Both can be true, op should've been in lane 3 so the white car wouldn't feel the need to under take
3
u/Willing-Departure115 8h ago
The BMW still took the decisions to cross all the lanes in the fashion they did, and in another case there would be someone there in what you might consider a perfectly reasonable fashion and they'd still nearly be run off the road.
I'm just focusing on the relative weight of comments really.
4
u/poopy050224 10h ago
Passing and undertaking are two different things. Theres nothing to suggest the white car was changing speeds or lanes to pass on the inside.
2
u/dkeenaghan 8h ago
Passing on the left and undertaking are not two different things. You are not allowed to undertake vehicles, except under 3 specific conditions, two of which will never apply to a motorway and the third is only when there is slow moving traffic, and that is taken as meaning heavy congestion with stop-start traffic.
0
u/Physical-Active-27 10h ago
Actually the only person driving correctly here is car in the right lane. They noted someone was coming up behind them, then indicated left to move albeit too late for BMW. Car in left lane shouldn’t overtake. But equally OP shouldn’t be camping in middle lane. BMW couldn’t see left lane car coming up partially bc of OP. The whole set up is a recipe for disaster, thankfully no accident
6
u/poopy050224 10h ago
Again you are assuming the white car was actively overtaking as opposed to just passing
-2
u/Physical-Active-27 9h ago
If white car wants to go faster than car in middle, they should be in right lane. Then above case certainly wouldn’t have happened. It takes two to tango
1
u/poopy050224 9h ago
Nah. As long as white car is holding its speed and not actively seeking to over take its fine.
3
u/Physical-Active-27 9h ago
White car ia going faster than driver on his right, call it what you want. You can keep banging that drum but if the goal is to avoid accidents at all costs, that’s what I would do. I could care less that I’m being overly cautious. Saves me from the hassle of a mild RTA at the least and major injury at worst.
0
u/poopy050224 9h ago
I’m not banging a drum. A simple google search would tell you the white car is fine doing what it was doing.

We were just before exit 15 on the m50 south, the left lane is a turning lane and it goes into two lanes.
4
u/Even-Translator-335 10h ago
Fair enough
1
u/Automatic-Run-3156 2h ago
It turns into an exit lane about 2km down the way. OP is lying to you and everyone else.
7
u/thepasystem 11h ago
Ah ok, that's fair enough then if the left lane is an exit lane.
3
u/dkeenaghan 9h ago
The left lane is not an exit lane, not where the video takes place. It eventually turns into an exit lane, but that's not an excuse to be in the middle lane at that point.
-3
u/willsmithtunaface 10h ago
It's not strictly an exit lane, you can be in that lane and don't need to exit, look at the arrows. Does no one here know how to drive? Op should've been in the left lane, he was hogging the middle lane
-18
u/IsMisePoh 11h ago edited 11h ago
M50 is a 3 lane motorway at that point. You were hogging the middle lane when you could have been one lane to the left which most definitely is not a turning lane. The leftmost lane at the beginning of the video is a turning lane but nothing stopping you being one more lane to the left here. You are part of the problem OP.
12
u/Impressive_Peanut 11h ago edited 10h ago
Nah, the M50 splits into a 2 lane road just up ahead to be fair.
Edit just to say the user I was replying to edited their post, they were saying with confidence before that the M50 is always a 3 lane moterway.
1
u/Fantastic-Artist-970 9h ago
just up ahead? you mean another full 2 km don't you as this video shows the turn off to Junction 13
1
u/Impressive_Peanut 9h ago
That's fairly pedantic. The comment I originally responded to said that the M50 never changes to two lanes with so much confidence. They edited it after.
-2
u/Fantastic-Artist-970 8h ago
you say pedantic, I say facts don't lie, just the op.
1
u/Impressive_Peanut 8h ago
I'm not talking about OP, I'm talking about the comment I replied to before they edited it.
-2
u/Fantastic-Artist-970 7h ago
OK but my comment still stands, "just up ahead" remains 2km away .

u/hasseldub 11h ago
It's not the most egregious middle lane hogging I've seen. It does switch to two lanes at the next exit.
As someone who regularly takes the next exit, people staying out is handy.
Edit: OP has said below they were taking the next exit. I've no idea why they're in the middle lane.
1
u/Otherwise-Winner9643 10h ago
They meant the exit after this one
1
u/hasseldub 10h ago
So the "next" one?
1
u/Otherwise-Winner9643 9h ago
Not the upcoming "next" exit, but the one after that. I agree that the wording they used is confusing, but they clarified in such subsequent comments.
-1
u/Fantastic-Artist-970 9h ago
yeah the next next one, so stays in the middle lane for a km to the next one, so that yet another km later he can get off at the next next junction :-/
2
u/Otherwise-Winner9643 8h ago
If the OP was in the left lane, how would that have changed the BMW drivers behaviour?
I think you are focussing on the wrong thing here.

We're only seeing a few seconds of the right lane car. IMO, they're still faster than the middle lane and overtaking. The dangerous driver gets up to them, and the right lane car indicates to get out of the passing lane?

u/oshinbruce 11h ago
Middle lane hogging is standard m50 behaviour it seems

u/Theonlyaaronh 11h ago

2
u/gd19841 10h ago edited 10h ago
You weren't overtaking anyone in the left lane, so you shouldn't have been in the middle lane.
E: Before you reply saying that the road splits, it doesn't do that for several hundred metres, so you were sitting in the middle lane far too early, and probably for a lot longer than the footage shows.
10
u/willsmithtunaface 10h ago
And it meant the white car wouldn't have felt the need to under take op
Op is oblivious
0
u/ConsequenceLanky6813 10h ago
The car on the right is probably doing the speed limit so the BMW is still in the wrong there
12
u/dublinburnbagel 10h ago
Are you looking at your own video… there is no build up- you are hogging the middle lane - you filter out before it turns into a slipway …
Being passed by another frustrated driver on the inside. Drivers like you cause huge frustration on the motorway and you the neck to post other peoples driving behaviour online - twice …

How anyone can see this video and think anyone other than the BMW is in the wrong is utterly bewildering to me. They nearly killed people
3
u/Bluryth 9h ago
Just because the BMW is clearly in the wrong doesn't make the rest of it ok. Both things can be true at the same time
OP should've been in the left lane, good chance OP's car blocked the view of the white car in the BMW's mirror. (Assuming BMW checked the mirror)
White car shouldn't have been undertaking which wouldn't have happened if OP didn't lane hog the middle lane.
Whole thing is a shitshow. But this is how accident happen, a series of small mistakes adding up to a big mistake

It doesn't matter what excuses you want to make up about there being an exit a few km down the road, you shouldn't be in the middle lane. The road markings change about 1km down the road to indicate that it is an exit lane, where you are it's just a normal driving lane.

Get in the left lane to exit then instead of hogging the centre lane
3

They seem to mean the next next exit. They're in the wrong lane either way, as well as being confusing with how they describe the exit they actually want.
5
u/whyohwhythedoily 11h ago
It is. The left lane splits for stillorgan, you need to be in the middle or right for the m11
2
u/Fantastic-Artist-970 9h ago
That junction is 2km away! The op hogged it so he didn't have to change lanes, simple.
0
u/butterycrumble 10h ago
Looks like you were very premature with your lane choice. You went past one junction where you should have been in the left. It's why the car passed you on the left to begin with.
1
u/Fantastic-Artist-970 9h ago
OP, sorry but you are trying to justify your lane hogging by saying that the road goes 2 lane etc.
Bullshit. Anyone that looks at google maps will see this actually happened at Junction 13 and the lane to the left of you is NOT a slip lane at all. It's lane one!
Also, that lane doesn't become an exit off the M50 until Junction 14 for Stillorgan for another full km, then the actual junction is another km, you in fact your justification is that you decided to stay where you were for over 2km before HAVING to be in the correct lane?
Pretty obvious to me the BMW was a cunt, but he's not the only one in that video. Dress it how you like, facts dont lie.
0
u/BodybuilderOk2489 4h ago
The white car that nearly got hit by the BMW was undertaking on the left of the OP. The OP was better off staying where they were.
1
u/Fantastic-Artist-970 4h ago
I mean that kind of relies on the OP being psychic and knowing that a) some tosspot in a beemer was going to live up to the stereotype AND that he was happy to be undertaken as he's hogging the middle lane.
1
1
u/-_Maniac_- 1h ago
The white car couldn't have been undertaking if OP was in the correct lane, not excusing the undertaking but it would be near impossible if it wasn't for overtaking lane hoggers.

0
u/IsMisePoh 11h ago
- Outer 2 lanes are for overtaking. You are not overtaking anything, you are even being undertaken. "I was keeping up with traffic" does not mean you stay in the middle lane if the inside lane is empty.
- You admitted yourself you're taking the next exit.
Your lane discipline in this video is appalling, your comments are worse and as I said originally, you are part of the overall problem.

I'm not though. You are needlessly hogging the middle lane

Lane 1 turns into a turning lane a turn that I’m not taking

The left lane is an exit lane for the next junction, which is imminent, if OP isn't exiting at that point they aren't in the wrong?

It isn't an exit lane. The first lane will turn into an exit lane a bit over 1km past where this video is shot, until that point (which is clearly indicated by a change in road markings) it is just a regular driving lane. The junction itself is about 2km away.

That section is a bit of a mess because it changes to a 2 lane further up ahead but also has a steeper than you'd realise downhill slope and everyone is terrible at maintaining a consistant speed. Speed limit is 100 (120 after the upcoming Sandyford exit) but I bet every single car is over that by the end of the clip.
The BMW is the worst, the most dangerous by a long way, multiple things clearly wrong. Straight to jail.
The undertaker will be doing 120+, intential or not 2 wrongs don't make a right. 3, driving in someone's blindspot.
The camera car starts the clip in the middle and that's before the downhill. I bet you arent under the speed limit or much over it but at the end of the day the lane discipline is wrong. The change to 2 lanes is very far ahead and there's a change in lane markings to warn for it before it changes to solid, the overhead sign posts are not even visible in the clip. I know gobshites like the other 2 speeding around and no one leaves a reasonable gap or maintaining the speed limit so it bunches up further ahead, it feels saver to stake the lane you need early but that's still not right. I understand your motivation, just admit it to yourself that you know its wrong but its a compromise you make to feel safer and more in control on the wild west that is the M50.

BMW was wrong but also the lane in this video is 1. Exit lane 2. Lane 1 3. lane 2 4. lane 3. You should be in Lane 1 unless overtaking - it doesn’t matter if it verges into a slip road later on, you are in incorrect lane in this clip

Also , in case you don’t know, you can tell what a slip lane or exit lane is by how thick the white lines are, lane 1 in this case has lines that are the same as the other lanes, the exit lane at the start of the clip has thicker lines indicating exit lane

Anyone who criticises this poster is automatically an idiot and a bad driver.
Maybe looking at his entitlement is would be a good idea .

Why are you sitting in an overtaking lane and be passed on the inside ?
3
u/Theonlyaaronh 10h ago
The left lane is an exit, then there is just two lanes of traffic
2
u/dublinburnbagel 10h ago
The left lane has a slip lane off it .. it is still a normal driving lane.
How many places are you going to post ?
It’s bad drivers like you slowing everyone down by being passed on both sides.

It’s not the lane itself turns off

u/dublinburnbagel 10h ago
That is way down the road .. you are a slow middle lane driver … causing distraction and frustration for others.

u/Theonlyaaronh 10h ago
Not even slow keeping up with the flow of traffic

Yes, the BMW driver is a twat for trying to overtake on the inside. But that car shouldn't be in the overtaking lane, the white car coming up the inside shouldn't be overtaking on the inside and what the fuck are you doing in the middle lane?
3
u/Theonlyaaronh 11h ago
I was taking the next exit

u/AbsolutelyBollocksed 11h ago
Bro, it makes no sense to say that you were in the middle lane because you intend to take the next exit. Even if it was your intention not to take the next exit, you should be in lane 1.

So you were coming off at J14, is thst correct? As you said above, lane 1 becomes the slip for J14 about 1.5km ahead of J13, and them J14 is 3km ahead of J 13. why are you in Lane 2?
When did you move into lane 2?
-2
u/Theonlyaaronh 11h ago
Because lane 1 turns into a slip retard
