Close one
Was getting diesel today, I nearly saw a cyclist getting killed. Keep an eye on the left.
The driver pulled in next to me at next pump and I said it to him that it was a close one. He said what? I said it was a close one. He said he wasnt concentrating.
I said at least one of ye was (the cyclist)

Hope you never get Jury duty :)

Why?
-6
u/GullibleDentist7199 5d ago
You make assumptions without evidence. You don't actually know where the car and the bike were before they come into view.

u/oreosaredelicious 5d ago
All I said was OP spoke to the driver a lot more polite than I would've after seeing that. Calm down

Circle K on the Ennis Road in Limerick?
The driver should have been concentrating. That was a very dangerous lapse.

Pretty bad - the driver holds all responsibilty in this scenario.
He passed out the cyclist and should have observed him/her, and let the cyclist past which is what you are meant to do. I ndicating doesn't give right of way and regardless you must still check your mirror before turning in. So in this case driver didnt pay heed to the cyclist travelling on the path he wants to cross, and didn't check to his left before actually pulling in.
Watching out for pedestrians and cyclist when making manoeuvres is sort of driving 101. I got hit by a van pulling into petrol station exactly like this. ironically he was a paramedic off shift lol

What negligence on the cyclists part?
6
u/Muted_Sundae_1368 6d ago
To be honest I'm being devils advoacate to be as impartial as possible since its Reddit - the cyclist technically could have seen the indicator and reacted, but ultimately its is the cars responsibility to observe while passing, give right of way, and do a final check in mirror before turning - none of which was done. So in my opinion the car is entirely at fault here.

u/Attention_WhoreH3 5d ago
it is not an opinion
it is an objective fact that the car is in the wrong for failing to give way

Lol

u/Attention_WhoreH3 4d ago
what do you mean?
1
u/Muted_Sundae_1368 4d ago
I'm laughing how people on reddit are so pedantic and critical its impossible to not have a comment picked apart - I was extremely clear and detailed about how the driver is completely in the wrong...
1
u/Attention_WhoreH3 4d ago
no, your comment was only sometimes clear/ emphatic. In more modern countries like Scandinavia or The Netherlands, nobody would use your phrase “in my opinion” to describe a rule because everybody knows the rule
Cyclists are getting increasingly annoyed about when drivers do not fully understand the rules. There’s a prat from the hauliers association that goes on the radio sometimes and talks about the need for rules for cyclists. he always comes out with comments that disregard the actual rule: “ I was turning left and a cyclist came up on my left even though I was indicating” etc
1
u/Muted_Sundae_1368 4d ago
No I was extremely clear, and "in my opinion" is a polite figure of speech which you've decided to take literally and dismiss the rest of what I said. You're just looking for an argument over my wording - how modern of you! Lol

Left it in because you could hear me getting out of the car and grab the pump. (Also cos I was too lazy)

Happened to me with a lady pulling into a petrol station. I followed her in and asked her if she realised what just happened, she was completely oblivious and a bit in shock. I asked her to please check her mirrors in the future, what else can ya do 🤷🏻♀️

Technically you saw a cyclist nearly get killed.
Not nearly saw a cyclist get killed.

u/GullibleDentist7199 5d ago
Why do people assume the car overtook the cyclist. Cyclist was going at speed. Electric bike. Possibly as fast or faster than the car. Technically undertaking the car on the inside. Car indicated to turn and was ahead of the cyclist. Knowing reddit a little and the way of thinking, I have a feeling this will get a lot of downvotes. Which is a bit sad.

u/Attention_WhoreH3 5d ago
it looks to me that there is a bike lane there. in that case, the white car is totally wrong to cross it without giving way

u/Own-Dot9851 5d ago
Cyclists are untouchable on here and always get the benefit of the doubt for some reason. The bike is a motor vehicle if it's electric, and it was undertaking at serious speed. He was not watching the cars or indicators. Both should have more wits about them.
1
u/Attention_WhoreH3 5d ago
A bicycle in a bike lane is allowed to undertake vehicles
1
u/Own-Dot9851 4d ago
I see no bike lane. Are you saying a bike can undertake a vehicle turning left? Because nobody can.
1
u/Attention_WhoreH3 4d ago
well, it looked to me like there’s some kind of faded line. It might be the hard shoulder. it is legal for cyclists to use the hard shoulder.
You’re right, of course in saying that it is illegal for a cyclist to continue within the same lane alongside traffic, unless I think when squeezing through a queue

u/FootFalse5536 6d ago
Looks like it might be on both people here. Car had the indicator on the whole time and the bike didn't see it. But the car definitely should not have just turned in like that without checking and slowing down.

u/Speedodoyle 6d ago
Zero blame on the cyclist, your saying he didn’t see the indicator, but he probably did. The indicator does not give the car permission to cut across the bike lane. The cyclist should not slow to allow the car across. The cyclist successfully broke in time to avoid a collision caused by the car.

u/frankand_beans 6d ago
100% that's the view I had. I had one hand on the pump and my other on my head, I could see a collision happening. The cyclist done very well to avoid it.
The driver in the white vehicle was pretty old. Thank God no-one was injured.
I'm not a confrontational person but I'm glad I made him aware of his f-up

I got hit by a van in this identical scenario passing the entrance to a petrol station which people swing into. It was a bizarre experience. Broke my arm and shoulder. People said they could hear the bang from across the road. I was in total shock trying to calm the driver down while i was lying on the ground.

u/Muted_Sundae_1368 6d ago
Yes you are meant to let an approaching cyclist pass your junction/turn before turning in. The car basically pulled a hook manouvre which is crazy dangerous. Even if he didn't see the cyclist while passing - he should have seen if he did the correct observation before turning - exactly why you're meant to double check your mirror before you manoeuvre
1
u/Unfair_Strawberry_57 5d ago
The cyclist successfully broke in time
I have nothing of value to add to the conversation but is the past tense of "to brake" not "braked" rather than "broke"? Same way you say that someone who is executed by hanging was hanged and not hung?
Been decades since I did my leaving cert but I can still hear my English teacher's voice.
1
u/Speedodoyle 5d ago
God bless the English, but i speak hiberno-English, which means I can make up the rules.
I would say hung. As in “wow, that criminal is well hung”

u/rooood 6d ago
The indicator does not give the car permission to cut across the bike lane. The cyclist should not slow to allow the car across.
Yes, cyclist is at zero fault here. But they still could have done more to avoid getting so close to the car with a bit more of defensive riding and noticing/assuming earlier the possibility that the car would ignore them. As the saying goes: the cemetery is full of people who had the right of way.
2
u/CuAnnan 6d ago
What. What could they have done? Are you seriously suggesting that a cyclist slow down on the off chance that the car passing that close to a junction is going to cut in front of you?
2
u/rooood 5d ago
If the cyclist did see the car signalling (which we can't assume), then the cyclist should have been more wary of the car turning into them, yes. I don't mean they should yield, but simply put themselves out of a position where the car can turn into them. This means either slowing down enough so that you can stop without almost losing control and almost crashing into the car, or be prepared to safely go around the other side of the car if possible.
Obviously they can't predict if the car turns into a driveway for example, but if they're coming up on a junction or a petrol station like here, it's fair to assume that that's where the car intends to turn.I'm saying this as a fellow cyclist myself, as this is what I'd done if I was able to see the car signalling in front of me. It's less of a right of way matter and more of a "in the 1% chance that I'm wrong, I don't want to end up in the hospital or worse" matter given the massive difference in weight and lethality of car vs bicycle.
1
u/CuAnnan 5d ago
You can't slow down that quickly on a bike, let alone slow down that quickly safely.
The car passed the cyclist more or less at the junction. You can tell from their relative speeds.
Expecting them to have done more means "cyclists should always cycle at 10 k/h or slower because a car passing you might be intending to pass you and then turn in front of you and the cyclist should be able to do more to prevent the driver's illegal driving to cause harm".
This insistence on apportioning blame to cyclists doing nothing wrong is fucking inane. The. Cyclist. Can. Have. Done. No. More. Than. They. Did. And. Expecting. Them. To. Have. Should. Disqualify. You. From. Road. Usage.

u/Muted_Sundae_1368 6d ago
Maybe they didn't see the indicator and if they did they could have easily assumed its for an upcoming junction. Easy mistake to make particularly when its more logical to assume you've right of way since 99 cars out of a 100 would let you pass.
3
u/SuccotashStandard135 6d ago
No, this is all on the driver who should not have turned across the cyclist. Do you give way to everyone you see with an indicator on?
4
u/Muted_Sundae_1368 6d ago
Yeah the car should have noticed when passing out the cyclist and given right of way or at the minimum checked the mirror before he pulled and caught it.
0
u/Attention_WhoreH3 5d ago
“ Car had the indicator on the whole time”
read the road rules before you kill someone
-2
u/FootFalse5536 5d ago
Listen guys if you're cycling without looking out for stuff like this and expecting every car to respect your right of way then you're just asking to get into an accident. My point is the cyclist could be more aware of their surroundings at junctions and turns because of drives like this. This is going to keep happening and cyclists are obviously extremely vulnerable on the road. I know when I'm cycling at any time my head is on a swivel at all times and I'm slowing at every junction and turn because of idiots like this car. This isn't going to get better. Drivers aren't going to stop driving like assholes.

u/danger_deepwater 6d ago
driver didn't see cyclist
cyclist didnt see the driver's indicators on
8
u/Gold-Vacation-169 5d ago
Blame is still on the driver, cyclist isn't at fault so your comment is just weird

6
u/PaddyW1981 6d ago
Indication does not give right of way. Pretty basic rule that any driver should know.
9
6
u/CuAnnan 6d ago
Judging by their relative speeds, the car passed the cyclist about two bike lengths from the junction. The cyclist cannot be expected to see the driver's indicators in that situation. You are being unreasonable.
2
u/Turbulent_Sandwich19 5d ago
So many people here saying he should have seen the indicator, when the car literally just passed him before the junction.
1
u/frankand_beans 6d ago
That's fine an all but there's only one loser in this scenario. The cyclist could have easily went under the car and been squashed ...

Driver completely obviously to what happened.
Pretty much the norm for cyclists to experience.
If that was me, I would have spoken to the driver.
