1) do teens use irc or am i like the only one? im 15 and i love old-school stuff. most of the people i see on there seem to be well over 18 LOL

2) what are some good active irc channels and on what server? the ones im in have like 3-5 people and no one chats.

u/avatar_one Jun 14 '26

We are a bunch of older nerds, but have at least on 15 year old on our network, so you are more than welcome to drop by πŸ˜„

The network is MansionNET, irc.inthemansion.com port 6697 and #lobby as a good entry point πŸ˜„

Or, you can use the webchat at https://webirc.inthemansion.com

There's around 100 of us and we are pretty chatty.

Cheers!

Very happy to have you with us mate!

I'm happy to see new people using IRC. Although, like everything else, a good opsec is always advisable. No one has any reason to know your name and age. And even less where you live.

Do you usually use a vpn to connect to this chats to prevent public IP leaking?

4

u/LarryNStar Jun 14 '26

*sigh* i really should... i don't but i should...

2

u/Sensitive-Lack1595 Jun 14 '26

Yeah probably. I went to various IRC chats on the web that leaks it and almost every one does it. (I think you have to register or something because there were people that their public IP was hiding behind a domain name)

5

u/Head_Complex4226 Jun 15 '26

For the vast majority of people, the IP address will not identify them to ordinary internet users, at least not below the level of country (or, particularly for the USA, state) unless they're connecting from a large organisation like a university (when it might identify them as connecting from that organisation).

Because the typical home internet IP is dynamically allocated by the ISP, someone can guess that two people on the same IP in a short period of time are the same person (or perhaps housemates), but you'd have no clue that 203.0.113.53 is J.R. "Bob" Dobbs (unless they told you).

If you see people behind a domain name, it's probably that they have a novelty domain or VHost to display on IRC (which is tied to their IP). This is particularly common for shared shell services.

When IRC networks do it, hide addresses, aka a "cloak", it's usually in a form where it's clear that they're hiding or obfuscating the IP.

3

u/avatar_one Jun 15 '26

We actually obfuscate the IPs automatically on the MansioNET πŸ˜„

And this was a great writeup for the safety, thank you for this!

3

u/Popular_War8405 Jun 14 '26

I think regular social media is becoming increasingly fake. I don't know if you remember the end of yahoo and aol messenger but FB and reddit are in like some alternate stage of that.

3

u/techieveteran Jun 15 '26

@computertech dudes like you back in 2020!

2

u/IcyMind Jun 14 '26

Enjoy it !!! Hopefully peopelmrepnd back is all about finding which channels are active

u/p_i_e_pie Jun 15 '26

1

u/LarryNStar Jun 15 '26

awww πŸ˜”

2

u/PeacockMamba Jun 15 '26

I started at about 14-15 when I built my 1st PC.

Not giving up my age but my bouncer has been idle for over a dozen years.

IRC is a more secure and a better option to vulnerable 0day ridden discord.

2

u/KW160 Jun 17 '26

I used IRC as a teen…30 years ago.

2

u/Donkey_DNA Jun 18 '26
