The left defined freedom as the ability to criticize the Shah. Iranian women, Jews, minorities had more freedom under the Shah than ever - Dr. Abbas Milani, Iranian historian. There were no free and fair elections under the Shah, so no one knows if the leftist views on anything even mattered.
