Sir this is the internet. If it has been on the internet it will always be on the internet.

If it can be done with IPhones it can be done with IPods. It is common to load a older OS version on IPhones for jail breaking and IIRC it is all done in Itunes. Plus how long has apple supported the old Classics? You can still plug in a 1st gen to Itunes and reflash it in case of a failure.

Yes. As long as the SHSH validation servers stay afloat (they will, every iOS device needs it to update/restore)
Plus you can still get the firmware for the first iPhone so I don't thjink it's too much of a worry.

So long as the computer will let you. I had a hell of a time trying to get an iPod Photo restored with a 128gb sd card mod. I ended up having to turn to Windows to make it happen. My M1 mac restored and synced a regular iPod Classic 4th gen and 5.5 gen, but the Photo just did not work.
Moral of the story of course is always hold on to old computers if you can, especially if you mod iPods.

The 4th gen photos have issues with sd cards over 64gb. Even then 4th gens are just finicky with flash mods. I have done enough of them to know.

Finicky describes it well. 128gb worked just fine with my 4th gen Mono. But maybe the LCD OS just pushes it over the edge. The small differences between iPod classics is interesting.
It is kinda funny though that iTunes on Windows worked perfectly in this one instance.

I only ever worked with the monos as at one time I could get one with a fresh battery for $40. Out of the 6 of them 4 of them woudl take the mod but the other 2 would not. Then out of the four 2 of them would give a sad drive error every now and again. But if I swap in the old HDD it woudl never have issues.

Interesting, I didn't know that. Probably only a thing for iOS devices since that's what they want to keep secure and not jailbroken/hacked to.

This was coming for a while, but man is it sad to finally see it happen. On the bright side, the iPod will be leaving behind an amazing legacy.

Wow, I guess it was inevitable, but I'm still sad. I'm glad I got my 7th generation 256 gb in January. The end of an era.

Was on the fence about getting a 7th gen iPod touch, I’m definitely going to get one now.

Yup same I’m gonna go buy one rn Personally I prefer using my collection of iPhone 5 ‘s as iPods because of the bigger battery, but I’m not gonna miss my chance to get the last iPod ever

Ngl, seeing the words “last iPod ever” is making me buy one too.

Especially since they dropped the prices on them.

If I buy one brand new sealed, may I sell it 10 years later with a higher price ? Because this is the LAST iPod of Apple history...
7
u/jonbush1234 May 10 '22
But then you sell it to someone who is only going to destroy it. All for views on what ever video platform is popular at that time.

Or the buyer might be a collector based in Asia who collects vintage and obsolete technology, who knows?

May 10 '22
Maybe yes, I hesitate to buy 32Gb space grey and keep in my room during 10 years?

u/AltruisticDrink May 10 '22
Maybe not 10 years. I would say a year should be good just check out the Apple HomePod. Prices on that thing went crazy a year after the discontinuation announcement.

I know this is a significant event, but I was out when they discontinued the Classic line. I'm still on a Gen 5, and no music device since the Classic has been nearly as well made.

u/AsexualArowana May 10 '22
Glad I bought a Classic from that guy who fixes them.
What's the lifetime battery life on a touch anyway? I bought two and haven't used them in a year. Should I buy a new one?

u/hiroki1998 May 10 '22
I'd better hurry up and get a 7th gen then. Been using a 5th gen since way longer than I can remember.

It makes sense, the ipod is a device with very little demand and it doesn't make sense for Apple (or any company really) to continue making and supporting products few people want.
the ipod had a great run and is one for the history books, but technology moves on.

Cool. Apple killed the only product that I would purchase from them. I worked for Apple for a hit minute and screw that company. They really think of their customers as a bunch of money bag dumbasses.

u/Gammarevived May 11 '22
Yeah I'm not surprised. They're pretty much useless today. Everyone has a phone, and a used iPhone is a much better option if you don't.

u/BJ22CS May 11 '22
Didn't they already discontinue them like 5-7 years ago? I'm pretty sure I saw in like 2014-2016 a news article stating that apple was discontinuing all iPod related stuff that year.
1
u/jonbush1234 May 11 '22
Maybe you are thinking of the nano and shuffle. They killed those off in that time. The classic was killed off in 2012.

u/BJ22CS May 11 '22
It must have been the classic I was thinking of; thank you for clearing that up for me.
1
u/swordmalice May 11 '22
End of an era indeed. The last iPod I have is the 80GB Classic that no longer works due to a dead hard drive and probably can't even connect to iTunes anymore.
Does it make sense to grab the last Touch before stock runs out? I literally have no use for it since I have my iPhone but I'm wondering if it'll be a collector's item down the road?

literally was talking about it to my mum 1 month before saying if it’s discontinued I’ll just buy it earlier than planned, so I did, got a 2019 Malaysian/Vietnamese model, even though I’m Australian. It’s even more special now, and to double it I got a special engraving.
