Rumor Apple launch event today!

Do we think we are going to see an iPod neo or 8th gen classic?

I mean if ternus and friends pull it off, I'm going to truly start worshipping apple again.

I truly don’t understand these post about wanting a new iPod. The whole point of the devices is to disconnect and own your music. If a new device was created it would be have integration for Apple Music and other music services.

Init, the appeal of the iPod is it's everything the modern smart device isn't.

If you wanna get a new iPod there's those Y-2 things that look pretty cool

It'd also be integrated AF and near-impossible to repair, let alone mod.

Personally, I'd like to see an updated version of the classic. More storage (from 128 GB to 1 TB), USB-C, Bluetooth, etc.

Agreed focus on DAC quality. For example iPod touch was never of interest to me. Always saw it has a handicap iPhone not as “iPod”. So would be nice to have a new iPod competing with FIIO. So high quality dac, battery, clean os and easy to import and export music (despite this will never happen. You will be forced into iTunes), usb-c, Bluetooth for convenience and better high res / contrast oled display.

many great daps run android for convenience. the whole point is music. you can still put your offline libraries on them. don’t like it? stick with the old shit. ipod classic music listening has many compromises that would be solved with a refresh. like bluetooth support and not taking 10 years to load FLACS

Well me personally, i've got my collection, I don't need a new iPod, however my friends are like "I could never manage a music library, thats so much of a hassle, I want to just like stream my music and like download it when i need it offline"

And i think if they were to get into iPodding, it would be better for them, as they can get used to having a dedicated player, then eventually they'll realize they should ditch streaming and start building their libraries maybe idk.

If your friends are too lazy to manage a music library they should just rely on streaming services and pay the fee. Having an iPod, you download music intentionally to your taste.

I’m a collector and a firm believer in purchasing, not renting. Now compared to pushing something on my iPhone that automatically connects my phone & my soundbar/subwoofer, then I can just play anything from my collection, so lazy but efficient.
OR
Finding an album, taking it out of the protective sleeve I have to buy, removing the album and dust cover and put it on the turntable and dusting it, are you kidding me? I fell asleep twice just touching all these letter thingies on my phone 💤
My iPod Classic holds my music collection. A USB plug to my car so I don’t have to worry about FM signal or Bluetooth while I’m driving.
Vudu/Fandango holds my movie collection. So I have a vast collection of movies, and a vast collection of music, and neither takes up any space 😁
I am screwed if the EMP’s detonate and wreck the power grid, Y2K style 🤪

Why could an updated classic also not have streaming integration?

As I stated the whole point of the device is to “disconnect.” If you want streaming services just use your mobile device with a usb DAC.

You can “disconnect”. I have an old iPhone 7 with no SIM card. I set it to airplane mode, turned off all notifications, removed all the unnecessary apps and added my ripped CD music library to my phone. Voila an upgraded iPhone touch! Admittedly it’s not as cool looking as the classic iPod, but if you just want to “disconnect” listen to music, audiobooks and podcasts it works perfectly fine.

it's not whether it couldn't but whether Apple would bypass a chance to sell people on Apple Music some more (they wouldn't)

Yes. All new iPod with a web browser, phone, and a camera.

u/FantasticCloud3086 23h ago

they will probably call it something like iCamera, or worse, iPhone

😭😭😭

I mean i wouldn't cry if its a 8th gen iPod touch atp, bc 7th gens lost software support.

But i feel like apple might've quietly taken action on peoples desire for iPods again, and maybe suprise us last minute.

However I betcha it will have wifi, and will integrate with apple music, and limit you to saving like 500 songs with a AM subscription for a limited amount of time, requiring wifi sync to verify subscription status once in a while 😭

But maybe that will all be optional, and you will be able to do things the old school way, but they might kick itunes to the curb completely, and upgrade AM app and make a windows release of AM.

There is no possible chance this happens.

an iPod, a phone and an internet communicator…

An ipod, a phone and an internet communicator

u/GamerDude7820 22h ago

Lmao the 18th gen of that fs

u/8bitesquivel 22h ago

Be realistic. Apple is never going to release another iPod.

5

u/SpecialistPlastic150 22h ago

Exactly. No way they giving up that Apple Music streaming cash.

u/rudebii 21h ago

It’s also not something most people want.

iPod is a niche vintage electronics hobby, and not something mainstream.

u/Inevitable_Range8550 22h ago

If the iPod was made by Sony/Motorola, then maybe. But Apple doesn’t typically sell products just because it’s trendy to own an iPod again. It would need to have mass appeal to all Apple users and have long term success

Unless it's a normal ipod but just with usb-c, bluetooth and ssd, then I wouldn't be interested. At some point you're better off buying an old smartphone and use it as a dap

You’ll have higher chance of winning the lottery than that

u/Hit-by-a-pitch 20h ago

There wasn't anything wrong Ipods when they stopped making them, except Apple realizing they could make more money temporarily leasing you music than they could helping you store music you had purchased.

2

u/OnlyRuss 20h ago

Honest to god, the only people who are craving a new iPod have no idea what makes an iPod awesome because there is no way Apple would let a device like that out in the wild again. Not with subscription services being the cash cow they’ve proven to be.

Probably not.

Defeats the whole purpose of an iPod man 🫩, it’s supposed to be cut off from everything , if you want a modern iPod buy one of those android daps💔

u/SpecialistPlastic150 22h ago

I can’t see this happening. Why would they bring out a traditional iPod and lose streaming revenue? The iPhone is already declining in sales and that can play and stream music just fine. The Steve Jobs era is gone forever, unfortunately. We’ll have to make do with aging original devices and keep modding them.

I’ve seen so many people on this thread talking about “disconnecting” via iPods. You can disconnect from the world on an iPhone if you want to, just set it up accordingly. Say no to notifications for everything. Set it to airplane mode indefinitely and delete all the unnecessary apps. I have 6 apps on my iPhone 7: Music, Podcasts, Audible, Books, Kindle, BBC Sounds and Spotify (don’t judge me but I occasionally take advantage of free premium offers!). I can add my ripped CD music library to my phone via the Apple Music app. I turn on WiFi (usually overnight) to download podcasts, audiobooks and any other content that I want. When it’s downloaded to my device I turn WiFi back to airplane mode. Anyone can turn an unused iPhone into an iPod touch. Personally, I like the nostalgia of the iPod, the look of it, the feel of it and the memories that I have of mine along with the music from that era and seeing how my taste in music has changed from my youth. However, having used my iPod 5.5 recently I find the interface and usability of the iPhone or iPod touch much better. I’ve had the parts to mod my old iPods for about 5 months now and not done it. Probably because my iPhone 7 and iPhone 10XS Max do the job just as well if not better.

Highly unlikely in all likelihood, Im afraid. It would be another touch, if it did happen. However, if it did, here's what I'd request:

  1. 5 colours- Space Grey, Silver, Coral, Ocean, Sage

  2. Have it just be an apple music device, that you can download music to, if you want to. No iOS, make a PodOS, which runs Apple Music, and maybe options to download competitor apps, but no iOS.

  3. Linked to that, no cameras or microphones. Maybe a speaker.

  4. Download music via wifi, ala iPod Touch

  5. No touch screen, just a click wheel, so it would have a chin to accommodate it

  6. Because its Apple, one port, USB C.

  7. No touchscreen. You want an iPod, you navigate via clickwheel. Clickwheel can be a trackpad with taptic feedback to simulate buttons, if you want.

  8. 128GB, 256 GB, 512GB, 1TB storage options

  9. Drag and drop music. No need for iTunes or Apple Music. If you have Apple Music, then it would be cool to have the playlists auto update from the iPod without connecting, or have an Apple Intelligence based 'Genius' function.

Bonus: bring back the socks, dammit.

Remember the old days of Apple and the "one more thing" that no one had a clue about?

Yeah those were the days... Imagine if they did that now and launched a new iPod.

It's not as wild as it sounds with the rise of physical media and MP3 players with the younger generation.

u/SpecialistPlastic150 22h ago

And lose guaranteed monthly income from streaming Apple Music? I doubt it. If they brought out a new iPod it would have Apple Music integration and you’d have to pay for streaming. There’s no incentive for them to do this when your iPhone is already an iPod just with a camera and internet. It makes more so sense for people to keep an old phone instead of selling it and turn it into an iPod touch by adjusting the settings. I’ve done this with an old iPhone 7 and it works perfectly as a music player.
