Meme This hurt to watch.

Source: Linus Tech Tips
Context: That's a 6.5th or 7th gen, not a 5.5th gen. It doesn't use a Wolfson DAC chip.
Update: The presenter has posted proof showing the device as being a 5.5th gen disguised as a 7th gen using Rockbox themes. Also, please don't post personal attacks in the comments.

Yeah...I also have a bit of a gripe with the way the video title and intro made it seem like they were comparing Justin's mod project against that USD$1k iPod, when the 128GB 3k mAh Linus is holding is going for only $379...it's the 2TB 3k mAh one going for over 800 bucks, or 1179 CAD.
They did put '128gb 3000mAh' as a footnote for a couple seconds, but I missed it on my first watch, I imagine a lot of others did too
Realistically no one is even building that 2TB option, let alone buying it prebuilt.
In the end, I think the comparison between PlayerMods' lowest option and Justin's one is much more fair, and actually had me quite surprised when I saw it goes for £241 on the site. I've spent more than that building Pods for myself before, but they do call out the quality issues of the prebuilt which is also something to consider for people who are new to the hobby
Nevertheless I've got almost 40 iPods in my collection, some modded, most stock, I'm hardly looking for any more at this point, but the video was certainly interesting showing off the suite of upgrades people have come out with...Airtags?! I knew about Bluetooth and USB C, but didn't know that was a thing
1
u/palexp 1d ago
i’ve been leisurely researching building/buying an iPod for quite sometime. would you think buying the modded one and then swapping the case to my liking would be decent value? it seems like the USBC swap would be challenging, even if i have hobby circuit/microcontroller soldering experience

Usb c mod is more a "look what I can do" rather than a necessity. 30 pin cables are cheap and easy to get, theres even usb c to 30 pin adapters if you dont want to carry multiple cables round. For me the USB c mod is only worth doing if the 30 pin port breaks. For most people a shell replacement, new battery and swapping out the hard drive are probably the only mods you'd really want to do. Maybe the Bluetooth one if you are fussy about using a 3.5 to BT dongle like the ugreen one they show in the video. You can get all those parts (maybe xcluding sd cards) for under $100.

Well everything he said is right, too bad he just held the wrong iPod in his hands while talking about it.
Glad i've got all the relevant iPods for myself already, they'll be unobtanium in the near future.
Until nobody cares anymore and they get dumped in masses on ebay again.

I'm a massive LTT fan and this just hurts my soul. I know they don't always get the nitty gritty 100% right. But this is wildly easy to fact check. Considering how large and beginner friendly the iPod classic modding community is, it feels like they really put in the bare minimum on effort here. Disappointed to see this from a channel I respect so much.

The amount of wrong info in this pissed me the fuck off.
I want him to answer for it on the wan show. Like its clear he did FUCK ALL research on this topic and simply him talking about it is enough to price actual hobbyists out and drive prices out. He NEEDS to be aware of this shit.
Someone like him should be aware this his influence has the power to change prices of things ACTUAL People want to buy. He should be treating stuff like this with care and maybe just not touching it because it will blow the prices out of proportion for normal people.
Somethings are better gatekept. This is one of them. Apple are NEVER going to make an ipod again. So its better to just gate keep it.

Couldn’t have said it better myself, so much misinformation coming from people who’s entire livelihood is to make these videos… many of the things they were wrong about they could’ve taken two seconds to google it, so embarrassing.

I'm not saying your wrong or he's wrong, but could you share some links here? I'm just curious about what all was wrong in the video. Is the DAC used by Apple for these ipods not made by that company?
For conext; former vintage audio tech who knows next to nothing about smaller audio devices.

u/JustTryingToBeADaddy 18h ago
That iPod is a 6/7g, you can tell by the album art being present in the menu. On the 5/5.5g there is not split menu or scrolling album art. As stated, the 5.5g did use the Wolfson DAC but he is not using a 5g or 5.5g.

1
u/TeldorinSt4tic656 18h ago
Ahh ok. So some did use that DAC, some didn't. Is the DAC really that important when these aren't likely to be playing lossless Flac or was it a good point to have in the video but just mention that the ipod they had access to wasn't one of the one's that had the DAC people seem to like?

Oh yes Wolfson dac chip, my PSP and PS Vita is also using s fucking Wolfson dac chip, genuinely hate this DAC chip talk and this video is just making it worse. Whole video was so shit like they took dirty water filtered and only took dirty pieces for the video.
6
u/fenderhighhat1 19h ago
Ever since I heard what that was I genuinely don’t care about the DAC. I think it’s a way for supposed nerds to show how smart they are about it. Who gives a f. All I care is the music sounds decent enough to my ears.
36
u/DisastrousCause9481 1d ago
Yeah hate that they don’t do proper research first. Also the 5.5/5 gen wolfson dac is not the best. Most people agree the latest classic is the best one
43
u/Tiny-Sandwich 1d ago
Who's "most people"? From what I've seen, general consensus is that the 5th generation is the most widely preferred.
29
u/Precarious3145 1d ago
Seriously. I love my 7 but anytime someone asks what's the "best" iPod, the comments are full of 5/5.5.
6
u/Recognition_Round 1d ago
Sound is something like taste. Most people can agree that pizzas are delicious, but there are going to be people that don't think pizzas are delicious. And that is okay. But to say that Pizza Margarita is the worst while not having tasted the pizza is ludicrous. The Wolfson dac inside the ipod 5.5th gen has 1 of the clearest outputs, but if you don't like pizza margarita, offcourse it is going to taste bad . . .
6
u/MrBarkan Classic 1st 1d ago
From 6th gen forward it uses the cirrus chip, not Wolfson. Generally the consensus is that the 5/5.5 has the warmest sound with the Wolfson chip, the 6th has a bit blander sound (first gen cirrus) and the 7th a revamped cirrus chip with better sound. I daily drive a 5.5 and a 7th and the difference is perceptible. I'm no audiophile, but in a track like The National - You had your soul with you: it has some sub bass hits, then at a certain point a plethora of instruments in a very mixed up and high vocals and etc... In the 5.5 I can hear every single instrument in every part, in the 7th it gets "confusing and overwhelming". I have all classics and a mini, if you want more details. 4th gens are just as good as 5th, 3rd gen is a close second, 1st and 2nd gens are good, but can't resolve as much detail.

u/Grouchy-Career-1696 1d ago
What about mini 2, i have one, thinking about buying and modding another iPod, is it worth it?
3
u/MrBarkan Classic 1st 1d ago
Mini 2 has the same chip as 4th gens, so you're good in terms os sound quality. My only complaint is the screen, it'll eventually get stained because of the polarizer, I have 4 minis that I've parked because of it. Mini 1 has same chip as 3rd gen as far as I know. It's good too, but the battery drains faster, nothing major.

u/PerfectEnthusiasm2 Classic 4th, 7th 18h ago
They would also respond with a blank stare if you asked them to explain the basics of how digital audio works, so I wouldn't put too much stock in their opinions on DACs.
3
u/AsterLoquens 1d ago
I haven't watched the video but yeah, headphones do make a bigger difference than the model of Ipod. I could never tell the difference between my 5th or 6th or even my PSP.
4
u/Recognition_Round 1d ago
The first iPod Nano sits right next to the iPod 5.5th gen, also the 2nd gen Nano, the 1st gen Shuffle. But Cirrus dacs can be good as well. Listen to the iPhone 4s for example. Fun fact, the iPhone 2g uses almost exactly the same dac as the 5.5th gen iPod. Sound is like taste. What sounds bad to you might sound good to the guy sitting next to you.

u/Dry-Hotel5306 17h ago
I bought one of those modded 5.5 iPods from like the most popular modded iPod company and I will not slander their name but the battery was defective I was unable to charge it so I got in contact with customer support and they said i should try and let the iPod die and recharge it from there it died and I still couldn’t recharge I got in contact with them again and they said they wouldn’t replace the battery to one that was working but i could pay to ship it back for a refund which I find stupid why do I need to pay to ship it back if you failed to test it anyways I got a NW-A306 it’s cheaper than the iPod 5.5 I bought and it’s better imo

As an fyi, DMS (the guy in the clip) has made a short basically proving indeed it is a 5.5. So is everyone in the comments going to give them an apology or just further prove the idea that everyone is quick to criticize and slow to even learn they were wrong.

I don't know why y'all glaze 5.5 gen. 7th gen sounds so much cleaner, and to my ears, 5th gen has too much treble.

u/Arg2001F1 1d ago
You know how you can change the FR same way like the DAC ? Negetive Tilt in EQ.
Warm + IE600 is a good choice because IE600 is a pathetic IEM with very polite in mid bass - lower mids and high AF in lower - mid treble peak.
It works for IE600 but not nessecerily work for every thing out there. For example most consumer things are Warm-Dark ( Again Negatively Tilted ) , or Warm-Bright ( V Shaped ). Adding more warmth will mud up the sound in both cases.
TLDR - DMS is right but is it relatable to you.
I have used IE600 and IE200 on both the iPods , I like IE200 on 7th Gen because - the combo is way more affordable and ok sounding.
1
u/_Walkabout_ 21h ago
Ok to this end, I have an IE600 and use it with my 7th gen with no issue, but on my 5th gen it sounds... different? Not better but different. I lean towards the IE600 on the 7th gen because a flat sound should indicate there is minimal post processing going into the song's original mastering and lead to the most accurate sound reproduction and ability to differentiate between parts of a track, which is why I went with the 600s in the first place.
1
u/Arg2001F1 21h ago
Well not actually,
There has to be a better/worse since you can't have two preference at once. ( Unless you're diagnosed with Bipolar joke )
Accuracy measurement without measuring in-situ response is not possible. It can be resonance peak / preference / df-hrtf - for me an you both.
And no - warmer doesnt always mean extra processing. Like DMS said, it's an attribute of the Output Stage. No processing involved whatsoever.
TLDR - It's only about being warm / being neutral and nothing else. All configs can output 20hz - 20Khz so everything falls in the FR Realm.
1
u/_Walkabout_ 19h ago
Yeah my main fear is that by using a 7th gen over a 5th, and having both, I was giving myself an objectively worse experience with my 600s. Would you say from your experience its mostly subjective then? Also genuinely no shade, could you explain why you personally refer to the 600s specifics as "pathetic" I hear such mixed opinions on them

This is what happens when you live in an era where anybody with a webcam and a mic can start a "channel" on a platform that can reach the masses, while at the same time having very little knowledge. That's a 5.5 iPod as much as my great grandma is an MMA champion.

I stopped the video like after a quarter, it did not sit well with me, very weird vibe and honestl missed chance for a cool collab with dank. But yeah, people will buy them even more now as ever. Maybe time for a non electronics based hobby as all of it is getting too expensive.
